Reverse aperiodic resonance in low- to high-dimensional bistable systems: A complement to stochastic resonance studies in logic circuits

As circuits continue to shrink in size, noise has emerged as a critical challenge in achieving optimal performance. Stochastic resonance in logic circuits offers an innovative approach to harness noise constructively;however, current implementations are limited to basic logical functions such as OR, AND, NOR, and NAND, restricting broader applications. This paper introduces a three-dimensional (3D) coupling model to investigate the counterintuitive phenomena that arise in nonlinear systems under noise. Compared to the one-dimensional Langevin equation and the two-dimensional Duffing equation, the 3D coupling model features more adjustable parameters and coupling interactions, enhancing the system's dynamic behavior. The study demonstrates that increasing noise intensity triggers reverse aperiodic resonance, leading to signal phase reversal and amplitude amplification. This phenomenon is attributed to the motion of Brownian particles in a bistable potential well. Additionally, reverse aperiodic resonance addresses the lack of logical negation in traditional stochastic resonance systems by introducing noise-driven phase reversal, providing a novel alternative to conventional inverters. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This paper proposed a hierarchical control framework that integrates an upper observer layer and a lower tracking layer. Based on higher-order sliding mode observer in the upper layer, a distributed high-order sliding mode observer (SMO) is used to approximate the leader's state, which can also identify some unknown and uncertain terms caused by malicious attacks. For the lower tracking layer, an adaptive fixed-time prescribed performance fault-tolerant control (FTPPFTC) method is leveraged to address the problem of malicious attacks and help the following agent achieve the stable tracking performance. By using the developed method, it is proved that the tracking errors of the multi-agent systems can converge into a small neighborhood within the fixed time. Finally, the numerical examples and comparative results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

Optical interferometry images are widely used in many research areas such as geoscience and remote sensing. However, the phase image which gets from the sensors is modulo-2π, and an important process is to estimate the absolute phase from the observation which is termed phase unwrapping. This paper addresses the absolute phase estimation of large scale images. The proposed phase unwrapping method is patch based which divides the large interferogram into small patches and does the unwrapping based on Markov Random Field for each small patch. This paper also analyzes the two types of errors that may be caused in the combination of the patches and studies how to get rid of these errors. The advantage of the proposal is that the method can be used for the wrapped phase images with discontinuous areas. Experiments in the paper show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

On-site potentials are ubiquitous in physical systems and strongly influence their heat transport and energy localization. These potentials will inevitably affect the dynamical properties of q-breathers (QBs), defined as periodic orbits exponentially localized in normal mode space. By integrating on-site terms into the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou-β system, this work utilizes numerical simulations and Floquet analysis to systematically explore the influence of on-site potentials on QB stability. For most QBs, except those at the phonon band edges, the instability is primarily governed by parametric resonance, and effectively described by coupled Mathieu equations. This approach provides a theoretical expression for the instability thresholds, which aligns well with numerical results. We demonstrate that the instability thresholds can be controlled through the strength of on-site potentials, and for a strong enough quadratic on-site potential, the QBs are always stable. Furthermore, the instability threshold is highly sensitive to the seed mode, in stark contrast to systems without on-site potentials. In addition, the instability phase diagrams exhibit joint interplay between different terms in the Hamiltonian, such as the quadratic on-site and quartic inter-site interaction terms, in regulating the QB dynamics. These findings offer valuable insights into QB stability and the manipulation of localized excitations in diverse physical systems with on-site potentials. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Background: Evidence linking fine particulate matter (PM2.5) constituents to childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was limited. Objectives: To investigate the individual and joint effects of exposure to PM2.5 constituents on ADHD. Methods: We conducted a large population-based survey involving 110,818 school children aged 6–18 years across six cities in the Pearl River Delta region, China. The three-year average concentrations of PM2.5 constituents (black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium) were estimated using the ChinaHighAirPollutants dataset. Parents completed an ADHD checklist using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV criteria. The individual and joint associations between PM2.5 components and ADHD were estimated using generalized linear mixed models and the quantile g-computation regression model, respectively. Results: The exposure-response relationships between PM2.5 constituents and ADHD primarily exhibited a nonlinear pattern. Compared with the lowest tertile, the highest tertiles of PM2.5 and its components were linked to greater odds for ADHD (e.g., the adjusted odds ratio (OR) was 1.37 (95 % confidential interval (CI): 1.27, 1.47) for PM2.5, 1.51 (95 %CI: 1.40, 1.63) for OM, 1.29 (95 %CI: 1.20, 1.39) for BC, and 1.20 (95 %CI:1.08, 1.34) for sulfate). Similar positive associations were observed between BC and sulfate exposure and ADHD subtypes. Moreover, joint exposure to PM2.5 components was associated with ADHD (OR = 1.14, 95 % CI:1.10, 1.18), with OM and BC contributing more to the observed associations. Conclusions: These findings highlight the varying contributions of PM2.5 constituents to ADHD and underscore the importance of reducing specific PM2.5 component emissions to mitigate the burden of PM2.5-associated neurodevelopmental diseases. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

Biological tissues exhibit complex gene expression and multicellular patterns that are valuable to dissect. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) provides full coverages of genes, but lacks spatial information, whereas spatial transcriptomics (ST) measures spatial locations of individual or group of cells, with more restrictions on gene information. Here we show a transfer learning method named iSORT to decipher spatial organization of cells by integrating scRNA-seq and ST data. iSORT trains a neural network that maps gene expressions to spatial locations. iSORT can find spatial patterns at single-cell scale, identify spatial-organizing genes (SOGs) that drive the patterning, and infer pseudo-growth trajectories using a concept of SpaRNA velocity. Benchmarking on a range of biological systems, such as human cortex, mouse embryo, mouse brain, Drosophila embryo, and human developmental heart, demonstrates iSORT’s accuracy and practicality in reconstructing multicellular organization. We further conducted scRNA-seq and ST sequencing from normal and atherosclerotic arteries, and the functional enrichment analysis shows that SOGs found by iSORT are strongly associated with vascular structural anomalies. © 2025 Tan et al. C4ISR system is the multiplicator of System of Armament systems (SoAS). An analysis method for Contribution Degree of C4ISR system is proposed in the paper. Firstly, Overall-Effect based evaluation method for operational effectiveness of SoAS is introduced. Secondly, Contribution Degree of C4ISR system is defined and experiment flow based on exploratory simulation is designed. On this basis, an analysis method for Contribution Degree of C4ISR system is put forward. Finally, a simulation experiment is executed to prove the effectiveness of the method.

complexity in System of systems (SoS) is a key factor in SoS decision making. This paper analyzes the main characteristics of SoS, especially its complexity in terms of monolithic emergence, component systems adaption and uncertainty in SoS evolution. It further discusses the effects of SoS complexity on SoS decision making. In light of SoS complexity, the paper figures out the major problems that need to be addressed in four areas, namely SoS adaption, abnormity analysis in SoS evolution, exploratory analysis of SoS capability and SoS simulation. In conclusion the paper proposes a preliminary SoS decision making model based on the analysis of SoS adaption. © 2012 IEEE.

Traffic dynamics of an on-ramp system with a cellular automaton model

This paper uses the cellular automaton model to study the dynamics of traffic flow around an on-ramp with an acceleration lane. It adopts a parameter, which can reflect different lane-changing behaviour, to represent the diversity of driving behaviour. The refined cellular automaton model is used to describe the lower acceleration rate of a vehicle. The phase diagram and the capacity of the on-ramp system are investigated. The simulation results show that in the single cell model, the capacity of the on-ramp system will stay at the highest flow of a one lane system when the driver is moderate and careful; it will be reduced when the driver is aggressive. In the refined cellular automaton model, the capacity is always reduced even when the driver is careful. It proposes that the capacity drop of the on-ramp system is caused by aggressive lane-changing behaviour and lower acceleration rate.
