The role of stagnant zones in hydrodynamic dispersion is studied for creeping flow through a fixed bed of spherical permeable particles, covering several orders of characteristic time and length scales associated with fluid transport. Numerical simulations employ a hierarchical model to cope with the different temporal and spatial scales, showing good agreement with our experimental results on diffusion-limited mass transfer, transient, and asymptotic longitudinal dispersion. These data demonstrate that intraparticle liquid holdup in macroscopically homogeneous porous media clearly dominates over contributions caused by the intrinsic flow field heterogeneity and boundary-layer mass transfer.

We investigate phenomena of multistability and complete chaos synchronization in coupled Hénon maps, which is an invertible system. Multiparametric analysis of a selected family of periodic orbits for coupled Henon maps shows that a single bifurcational mechanism describes both a loss of chaos synchronization and multistability formation. We show that the Fano resonance, which has been actively studied in the context of mesoscopic transport in systems with impurities or defects, also occurs in translationally invariant nonlinear chains. We find that the phonon scattering with the intrinsic nonlinear localized excitation, called the discrete breather, in this system produces a rich resonance structure involving the typical signatures of Fano resonance with both perfect transmission and perfect reflection, and the anomalous resonance structures. Our system can serve as a simple paradigm for understanding rich Fano-related phenomena in a wide class of nonlinear lattices, based on the global structure of the localized modes and the perfect reflection.

The design and development of an annotated and timealigned speech database for Hindi language is described here. Although this continuous speech database is principally intended for training of a speech recognition system for Hindi, the design specifications of the database are general so that it can also be useful in tasks such as speaker recognition, study of acousticphonetic correlates of the language. The database consists of a total of 500 sentences spoken by 50 speakers. There are two sets of sentences. The first set of 2 sentences (containing most Hindi phonemes) was read by each and every speaker. The second sets of sentences (8 distinct sentences per speaker) were designed such that they collectively cover most phonemic contexts. The database is comprehensive enough to effectively capture phonetic, acoustic, intra-speaker and inter-speaker variabilities in Hindi speech. The speech data was simultaneously recorded using a close talking microphone and another desktop "far field" microphone. The former speech data was manually segmented and labeled in terms of sub-phonetic units by trained personnel. The database was used to conduct a study of the prosodic characteristics of the Hindi vowels. There are five pairs of vowels in Indian languages;one member is longer in duration than the other. It was observed that native speakers of Hindi seem to give more importance to the duration attribute to contrast vowels in a vowel pair than non native speakers.

Recently, the phenomena of stochastic resonance (SR) have attracted much attention in the studies of the excitable systems under inherent noise, in particular, nervous systems. We study SR in a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley neuron under Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise and periodic stimulus, focusing on the dependence of properties of SR on stimulus parameters. We find that the dependence of the critical forcing amplitude on the frequency of the periodic stimulus shows a bell-shaped structure with a minimum at the stimulus frequency, which is quite different from the monotonous dependence observed in the bistable system at a small frequency range. The frequency dependence of the critical forcing amplitude is explained in connection with the firing onset bifurcation curve of the Hodgkin-Huxley neuron in the deterministic situation. The optimal noise intensity for maximal amplification is also found to show a similar structure.

We perform parametrized density-functional calculations to predict the stability and formation mechanism of GaN nanotubes. Strain energies of GaN nanotubes are comparable to those of carbon nanotubes, suggesting the possibility for the formation of GaN nanotubes. We note that an intermediate phase with polygons exist at armchair tube edge, which may play as a nucleation seed of further tube growth.

We study the nonlinear response of the Hodgkin-Huxley model without external periodic signal to the noisy synaptic current near the saddle-node bifurcation of limit cycles. The coherence of the system, estimated from the interspike interval histogram and from the power spectra of membrane potentials and spike trains, is maximal at a certain noise intensity, so that the coherence resonance occurs. The mechanism of this phenomenon is found to be different from previously studied models of coherence resonance and explained in terms of rigid excitations of periodic oscillations, and the combined effect of amplitude and phase fluctuations.
