Weak Multi-Label Data Stream Classification Under Distribution Changes in Labels

Multi-label stream classification aims to address the challenge of dynamically assigning multiple labels to sequentially arrived instances. In real situations, only partial labels of instances can be observed due to the expensive human annotations, and the problem of label distribution changes arises from multiple labels in a streaming mode, but few existing works jointly consider such challenges. Motivated by this, we propose the problem of weak multi-label stream classification (WMSC) and an online classification algorithm robust to weak labels. Specifically, we incrementally update the margin-based model using information from both the past model and the current incoming instance with partially observed labels. To increase the robustness to weak labels, we first adjust the classification margin of negative labels using the label causality matrix, which is constructed by the conditional probability of label pairs. Second, we introduce the label prototype matrix to regulate the margin by controlling the weighting parameter of the slack term. Additionally, to handle the potential distribution changes in labels, we utilize the instance-specific threshold via online thresholding to perform binary classification, which is formulated as a regression problem. Finally, theoretical analysis and empirical experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of WMSC in classifying unobserved streaming instances. © 2015 IEEE.

Intensified Tropical Cyclones in Global Climate Simulations Employing a High-Wind Drag Relation over Sea Surface

Accurate parameterization of momentum fluxes at high winds across the air–sea interface is crucial for realistically simulating the surface wind fields of tropical cyclones (TCs). Climate models often struggle to reproduce observed TC intensities, particularly surface wind speeds. This study evaluates the performance of a revised surface drag scheme with a capping drag coefficient at high wind speeds in global climate models (GCMs). Our results indicate that the revised surface drag scheme significantly improves the representation of TCs in a statistical sense: (i) Not only the mature intensity but also the maximum 10-m wind speeds throughout the TC life cycle are largely enhanced;(ii) biases in the pressure–wind relationship are notably alleviated, exhibiting reasonable agreement with observations;and (iii) other TC statistical features, such as TC number, central sea level pressure, individual lifetime, and intensification rate, show relatively minor sensitivity to the surface drag schemes. The main reason for the superiority of the revised high-wind drag relation is that the lower drag coefficient in high-wind conditions significantly increases the maximum potential intensity (MPI), indicating a higher theoretical limit for TC intensities. These findings are consistent across different model versions and resolutions, highlighting the robustness of the high-wind surface drag parameterization in controlling the simulated surface wind speeds of TCs in GCMs. © 2025 American Meteorological Society.

Geometrically Shaped Constellation in Short-Packet Visible Light Communications for IIoT Applications

Due to the high data rates, license-free operations and inherent security, visible light communication (VLC) is highly valued in industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. Short packet communication, which offers ultra-low latency and efficient resource utilization, is suitable for the low-latency and massive connectivity demand of the IIoT system. It adopts finite blocklength codewords for data transmissions. In this paper, we present a general framework of designing geometrically shaped constellations in short-packet VLC with peak and average intensity constraints for IIoT applications. By leveraging tools from large deviation theory, we first characterize the second-order asymptotics of the optimal constellation shaping region under aforementioned intensity constraints, which serves as a good performance metric for the best geometric shaping in finite blocklength. To further incorporate a sufficiently large coding gain and a nearly maximum shaping gain, we construct multidimensional constellations by the nested structure of Construction B lattices, where the constellation shaping is implemented by controlling the boundary of the embedded sublattice, i.e., a strategy called coarsely shaping and finely coding. Fast algorithms for constellation mapping and demodulation are presented as well. As an illustrative example, we present an energy-efficient 24-dimensional constellation design based on the Leech lattice, whose superiority over existing constellation designs is verified by numerical results. © 2014 IEEE.

Recently,the Third Pole(TP)region has experienced rapid environmental *** data are essential for hydrometeorological and ecological applications but still have large uncertainties on the TP owing to the heterogeneous land surface,complex terrain,and sparse weather *** this study,a long-term(1979–2020)high-resolution(1/30°)meteorological forcing dataset for the TP(TPMFD)was developed,as a sister to the widely used China Meteorological Forcing Dataset(CMFD).The TPMFD comprises seven components necessary for driving land surface *** have previously contributed precipitation and downward shortwave radiation data for the TPMFD,and this study presents the development of five other components and focuses on validations for all ***,2-meter air temperature,2-meter specific humidity,10-meter wind speed,and surface air pressure were generated by combining the fifth-generation atmospheric reanalysis for European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ERA5),a short-term high-resolution atmospheric simulation,and in situ observations,and the downward longwave radiation was calculated using semi-physical *** cross-validation and independent-validation demonstrated that most variables in the developed dataset outperformed those in widely used reanalysis datasets,including ERA5,ERA5-Land,and the Global Land Data Assimilation system(GLDAS).This dataset is expected to be beneficial for climate analyses and modeling applications of land-surface processes on the TP.

Due to the diversity of edge devices and applications, edge systems are heterogeneous and have been applied in artificial intelligence fields such as smart factories and intelligent transportation, which is called heterogeneous edge intelligence. Many studies employ computation offloading to transfer processing data from resource-scarce edge devices to resource-rich edge servers. These studies primarily focus on the overall resource consumption of homogeneous edge systems, neglecting the system heterogeneity and the details of resource consumption. In this article, we construct a system model from a parallel perspective for the heterogeneous edge system with different processors, memory, and applications, which perceives the cost of energy and delay from three levels: system, application, and component. A hybrid metaheuristic algorithm combined with a greedy rule, hybrid mutation, and whale optimization algorithm (GHMWOA) is proposed to realize partial computation offloading. A partial offloading architecture of heterogeneous edge intelligence is proposed to validate our model and algorithm with real-world hardware and software. Experiment results not only show GHMWOA outperforms multiple classical optimization algorithms in minimizing energy consumption, but also discover on which system component energy consumption depends, and how properties of application and system influence the cost of energy. © 2014 IEEE.

Novel Sparse Codebook Design for MIMO-SCMA

The combination of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and sparse code multiple access (SCMA), referred to as MIMO-SCMA, can be leveraged to achieve high spectrum efficiency and provide massive connectivity for future machine -type communication networks. This paper aims to design enhanced sparse codebooks for MIMO-SCMA by jointly combining frequency and spatial diversity over Rayleigh fading channels. First, based on the pairwise error probability (PEP), novel codebook design criteria have been presented, namely the hybrid minimum product distance of the Euclidean distance (MPD-ED) and the minimum Euclidean distance of the superimposed constellation at each frequency element (MED-FE). Then, enhanced mother constellations (MC) are proposed by maximizing the MPD-ED of the MC based on the alternating optimization. Subsequently, the multi-dimensional codebooks are obtained by applying user-specific rotation of the proposed MC to maximize the MED-FE, where the unitary rotations are considered to fully leverage the Euclidean space of the transmit antennas while maintaining the MPD-ED value of the codebook. Finally, numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art codebooks. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Learning Video Salient Object Detection Progressively From Unlabeled Videos

Recently, deep learning-based video salient object detection (VSOD) has achieved some breakthroughs, but these methods rely on expensive annotated videos with pixel-wise annotations or weak annotations. In this paper, based on the similarities and differences between VSOD and image salient object detection (SOD), we propose a novel VSOD method via a progressive framework that locates and segments salient objects in sequence without utilizing any video annotation. To efficiently use the knowledge learned in the SOD dataset for VSOD efficiently, we introduce dynamic saliency to compensate for the lack of motion information of SOD during the locating process while maintaining the same fine segmenting process. Specifically, we utilize the coarse locating model trained on the image dataset, to identify frames with both static and dynamic saliency. Locating results of these frames are selected as spatiotemporal location labels. Moreover, by tracking salient objects in adjacent frames, the number of spatiotemporal location labels is increased. On the basis of these location labels, a two-stream locating network with an optical flow branch is proposed to capture salient objects in videos. The results with respect to five public benchmarks demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art weakly and unsupervised methods. © 1999-2012 IEEE.

Highly integrated multiplexed microscopy system for integrated circuit failure analysis

In this paper, we present an optical multiplexing structure designed to develop a highly integrated, non-contact, non-destructive inspection system for integrated circuit failure analysis or semiconductor defect detection. This system comprises four subsystems: a bright-/dark-field microscope subsystem, an emission microscope subsystem, a laser confocal scanning microscope subsystem, and a fluorescence confocal microscope subsystem. The functionality of the system is verified and analyzed using avalanche photodetectors. The detection process involves sequential steps: locating the light-emitting devices, performing 3D imaging to assess damage, and comparing fluorescence lifetimes among the devices to analyze the failure mechanisms. This multimodal detection approach enables rapid and accurate identification of production issues, facilitating the tracing of root causes for failures. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. Two-dimensional (2-D) array sets with good 2-D correlation properties have received considerable attention in wireless communication systems. This paper focuses on 2-D Z-complementary array code sets (ZCACSs), which have ideal 2-D correlation properties within a rectangular zone around the origin. By developing a theory linking 2-D extended Boolean functions with 2-D arrays, we establish an efficient construction of 2-D ZCACSs. In contrast to previous work, the proposed construction is capable of producing 2-D ZCACSs with new flexible parameters. Constructions of three-dimensional (3-D) and higher-dimensional ZCACSs are further investigated. We remark that 2-D and higher-dimensional complete complementary codes (CCCs) can also be generated from the proposed constructions. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Two-dimensional violet phosphorus as a broadband saturable absorber for mid-infrared photonics

Two-dimensional (2D) violet phosphorus (VP), a recently investigated 2D semiconductor material, is promising for advanced optoelectronic applications because of its distinct physical and chemical features. In this work, high-quality, few-layered, 2D VP nanosheets were prepared, and their nonlinear optical (NLO) absorption characteristics were examined in detail in the 2 and 3 µm bands. The calculated high nonlinear absorption coefficients, low saturation intensities, and high modulation depths of 2D VP nanosheets demonstrated their exceptional mid-infrared (MIR) saturable absorption properties and significant potential for MIR photonic applications. Thus, in the Tm: GdVO₄ laser and Er: YAP laser, we employed 2D VP as a broadband saturable absorber (SA), and obtained stable Q-switched pulse outputs with pulse durations of 522.6 ns at 1.9 µm and 195 ns at 2.8 µm, respectively. In particular, the pulse width obtained at 3 µm based on 2D VP-SA is much narrower compared to that obtained for most other 2D materials SAs. These results demonstrate that 2D VP can be a potential candidate for broadband MIR SA. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.
