Stochastic Block Models for Complex Network Analysis: A Survey

Complex networks enable to represent and characterize the interactions between entities in various complex systems which widely exist in the real world and usually generate vast amounts of data about all the elements, their behaviors and interactions over time. The studies concentrating on new network analysis approaches and methodologies are vital because of the diversity and ubiquity of complex networks. The stochastic block model (SBM), based on Bayesian theory, is a statistical network model. SBMs are essential tools for analyzing complex networks since SBMs have the advantages of interpretability, expressiveness, flexibility and generalization. Thus, designing diverse SBMs and their learning algorithms for various networks has become an intensively researched topic in network analysis and data mining. In this article, we review, in a comprehensive and in-depth manner, SBMs for different types of networks (i.e., model extensions), existing methods (including parameter estimation and model selection) for learning optimal SBMs for given networks and SBMs combined with deep learning. In this research, a novel dynamic and heterogeneous identity based cooperative co-evolutionary algorithm (DHICCA) is proposed for addressing the distributed lot-streaming flowshop scheduling problem (DLSFSP) with the objective to minimize the makespan. A two-layer-vector representation is devised to bridge the solution space of DLSFSP and the search space of DHICCA. In the evolution of DHICCA, population individuals are endowed with heterogeneous identities according to their quality, including superior individuals, ordinary individuals, and inferior individuals, which serve local exploitation, global exploration, and diversified restart, respectively. Because individuals with different identities require different evolutionary mechanisms to fully unleash their respective potentials, identity-specific evolutionary operators are devised to evolve them in a cooperative co-evolutionary way. This is important to use limited population resources to solve complex optimization problems. Specifically, exploitation is carried out on superior individuals by devising three exploitative operators with different intensities based on techniques of variable neighborhood, destruction-construction, and gene targeting. Exploration is executed on ordinary individuals by a newly constructed discrete Jaya algorithm and a probability crossover strategy. In addition, restart is performed on inferior individuals to introduce new evolutionary individuals to the population. After the cooperative co-evolution, all individuals with different identities are merged as a population again, and their identities are dynamically adjusted by new evaluation. The influence of parameters on the algorithm is investigated based on design-of-experiment and comprehensive computational experiments are used to evaluate the performance of all algorithms. With the increase of computing-intensive and delay-sensitive applications, mobile edge computing (MEC) technology has sprung up. It effectively satisfies the needs of user equipment (UE) for real-time computing resources by placing servers at the edge of the network. However, traditional MEC infrastructures are constrained by their fixed locations and emergency mobility needs. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer an effective solution with low cost, high mobility, and flexible deployment capabilities. In this paper, we propose a region-centric UAV-assisted MEC model, where the whole network space is divided into a set of hexagonal cells of equal area, and all UAVs in the same cell jointly process UE offloading data. Assume all UAVs are assumed to be equipped with independent MEC servers, and both UAVs and terrestrial UE follow independent homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) distributions. Using the stochastic geometry analysis framework, we derive the successful uplink communication probability (SUCP) of uplink transmission for users. Finally, we compare the simulation results with the theoretical values to verify the model’s accuracy and evaluate the influence of key performance parameters on the network performance. © IFIP International Federation for information Processing 2025.

In recent years, research on terahertz metasurfaces has made significant progress and is evolving towards multifunctional integration. Traditional forward design methods have gradually exposed efficiency bottlenecks in multifunctional design due to their high computational complexity. The proposal of the inverse design paradigms has brought revolutionary breakthroughs in the design efficiency of multifunctional metasurfaces and greatly reduced the design threshold. As an efficient inverse design optimization algorithm, the gradient descent method can rapidly optimize a phase distribution driven by multi-objective tasks. However, the loss function in this traditional gradient descent (TGD) method only considers image loss, leading to large gradients between adjacent phases in the phase distribution, which in turn results in low efficiency of the metasurface. To address this issue, we propose a modified gradient descent (MGD) method. By introducing gradient loss, this method effectively enhances the smoothness of phase distribution. As simulation verification, we used the MGD method to design a geometric phase terahertz metasurface, successfully achieving nine-channel dispersive meta-holography, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the gradient loss term. We believe the proposed MGD method has broad application prospects in multifunctional metasurface design. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

Achieving perfect Channel State information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is often infeasible in Extremely Large-scale Antenna Array (ELAA) systems due to user mobility and feedback/processing delay. This results in severe multi-user interference. Therefore, how to effectively and efficiently manage interference with partial/historical CSIT is one of the most important challenges for implementing ELAA. In this paper, we propose a Federated Learning (FL)-assisted predictive beamforming framework for ELAA systems to address this challenge. Specifically, we introduce Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) to relax the sensitivity to imperfect CSIT while still benefiting from the spatial resolution. Moreover, a predictive beamforming protocol is designed to optimize the precoder design under the imperfections in the channel estimate quality originating from user mobility and latency. To calculate the beamformers, we first propose a lightweight patch-mixing approach to split the historical CSIT data samples into smaller manageable segments. Then, we propose an FL-based training method that enables parallel processing of these CSI segments, thereby accelerating the training process. Simulation results show the effectiveness and efficacy of the proposed FL-assisted predictive beamforming framework, which paves the way for real-world implementation of ELAA. © 2007-2012 IEEE.

The rapid development of smart cities driven by emerging information technologies has ushered in new opportunities and challenges in various domains, including education. As the prevalence of misinformation and fake news continues to grow, there is a pressing need to develop resilient smart cities that can effectively address this issue. This paper proposes a novel approach to address misinformation and fake news in propaganda texts within smart cities. It emphasizes the importance of smart education (SE) in equipping individuals with critical thinking and media literacy skills to combat misinformation effectively. This study leverages artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and education to detect and debunk fake news across multi-domain, targeting vulnerable populations. This paper investigates a two-stage stochastic facility location game in which customers pay the incurred costs by sharing the costs, including facility opening and customer connection costs. The players in this game are the customers, and the aim is to minimise the total cost by deciding which facilities to open and how to connect customers in the most cost-effective way. The model is inherently cross-monotonic. We are interested in developing cross-monotonic cost-sharing strategies to encourage customers to cooperate by revealing their true value. To this end, we propose an approximation method based on the primal-dual technique. In robotics applications, ensuring reliable performance in the presence of actuator faults is essential for maintaining system safety and reliability. This paper presents a tolerant tracking control method for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) based on adaptive dynamic programming and fault compensation. The method simultaneously considers tracking accuracy and energy consumption through a policy iteration algorithm. In the optimality analysis of the algorithm, more relaxed conditions are provided to demonstrate that the performance function can converge to a near-optimal value within a finite number of iterations. In practical implementation, an actor-critic network is used to approximate the performance function and control protocol, alongside a fault detection mechanism based on an expanded time horizon, which achieves fault detection from arbitrary initial values. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified using a high-fidelity PMSM model in Simulink. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Early detection and assessment of polyps play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). Polyp segmentation provides an effective solution to assist clinicians in accurately locating and segmenting polyp regions. In the past, people often relied on manually extracted lower-level features such as color, texture, and shape, which often had problems capturing global context and lacked robustness to complex scenarios. With the advent of deep learning, more and more medical image segmentation algorithms based on deep learning networks have emerged, making significant progress in the field. This paper provides a comprehensive review of polyp segmentation algorithms. We first review some traditional algorithms based on manually extracted features and deep segmentation algorithms, and then describe benchmark datasets related to the topic. Specifically, we carry out a comprehensive evaluation of recent deep learning models and results based on polyp size, taking into account the focus of research topics and differences in network structures. Finally, we discuss the challenges of polyp segmentation and future trends in the field. © The Author(s) 2025.
