Navigation services enable users to find the shortest path from a starting point S to a destination D, reducing time, gas, and traffic congestion. Still, navigation users risk the exposure of their sensitive location data. Our motivation arises from how users can accurately, securely, and efficiently navigate from S to Dwhile passing through k unordered stops, i.e., midway locations with a non-fixed visiting order. In this work, we formally define Semi-Constrained Navigation (SCN) and present a novel scheme Hermestoachieveaccurate,secure, andefficient SCN. Specifically, weproposeadivide-and-conquerapproachtostrikeagoodbalance betweenaccuracyandefficiency. It recursively depth-first-searches the whole area (a navigation tree) and invokes five carefully-crafted strategies stop-by-stop to compute three subpaths in three se quential subareas. We construct a path-distance oracle to encrypt the road graph and securely implement the strategies by using homomorphic encryption and garble circuits. We formally prove the security in the random oracle model and analyze the search complexity to be less than O(k2). We experiment over a real-world city map and compare with six baselines. Results show that path search with k = 4 among N = 1000 intersections requires 5.58 seconds with a 3.2% distance deviation rate and an 82.5% path similarity. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

With the increase in maritime activities, traditional communication methods can no longer meet the needs of today’s maritime work, and the use of unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) relay communications in marine scenarios has attracted more and more attention. In this paper, A long-distance three-node two-hop UAV relay system for maritime users is investigated. The UAV aerial relay node first transmits an energy-carrying radio frequency (RF) signal to the maritime user node, which then harvests energy and sends data information back to the UAV aerial relay node, which in turn forwards it to the land node. Considering the peculiarities of maritime communication channels, a novel land-air-maritime communication channel model is proposed. Utilizing Zero-Forcing/Zero-Transmission (ZFR/ZFT) technology, a precoding matrix for the aerial relay node is designed, followed by simulation and emulation, the performance of the channel is tested in the case of different transmission power of relay nodes or different number of antennas of relay nodes. © ICST Institute for Computer sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2025.

Toward better semantic segmentation by retaining spectral information using matched wavelet pooling

Pooling operations, such as average pooling, strided convolution, and max pooling, have become fundamental components of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) due to their ability to capture local features, expand receptive fields, and reduce computational costs. However, in the context of semantic segmentation, these pooling techniques can lead to the loss of crucial spatial details that are necessary for accurate pixel-level predictions. To tackle this issue, extensive research has focused on refining deep CNN models through architectural adaptations and novel training methods. Recent studies have demonstrated the importance of pooling layers, exemplified by innovations like the introduction of wavelet pooling. In our study, we highlight the value of incorporating our previously proposed matched wavelet pooling (MWP) into CNNs to enhance semantic segmentation pipelines. The core concept of MWP challenges the notion that including all sub-bands generated from wavelet decomposition consistently improves accuracy. Instead, we advocate for selecting specific sub-bands for the pooling process in each image during both training and testing. This approach introduces sub-band selection protocols customized for image-specific pooling, designed specifically for semantic segmentation CNN architectures, with a particular focus on the UNet and SegNet models. Across three widely used datasets, our proposed MWP- based pipeline, featuring the MWP-UNet architecture, consistently outperforms conventional pooling methods. It achieves a significant average improvement in intersection over union (IoU) of over 25% compared to recent literature. Additionally, our MWP-SegNet model outperformed the standard SegNet by 12.5% mIoU, further demonstrating the effectiveness of our matched wavelet pooling approach across different network architectures. © The Author(s) 2025.

Solving Overlapping Coalition Structure Generation in Task-Based Settings

The overlapping coalition structure generation problem (OCSGP) is a challenging computational problem in multi-agent systems. It focuses on selecting possibly overlapping coalitions from a set of agents to maximize the social welfare of all coalitions while containing all agents. However, in practical applications, coalitions may be formed to selectively respond to tasks from a pool of potential tasks assigned to agents. Consequently, this study considers OCSGP in a task-based setting, where each agent has finite resources and can only respond to tasks of interest, and each coalition can only take on mutually disjoint subsets of tasks. Specifically, we first present a model of the task-based OCSGP and investigate its computational complexity. Our theoretical results demonstrate that this specific OCSGP remains intractable even under restrictive assumptions. Subsequently, we develop a generic evolutionary algorithm framework (EAF) to find an approximately optimal overlapping coalition structure (OCS) in time quartic polynomial in the size of the instance. Particularly, we devise a specific solution-repair based heuristic of cubic time complexity to generate a feasible OCS. Finally, we compare the proposed EAF with a task-oriented heuristic and a hybrid algorithm for OCSGP, and examine its applicability in the pursuit-evasion problem. The experimental results reveal that the proposed EAF exhibits superior performance in finding feasible OCSs and demonstrates flexible adaptability to problem size and resource status. ©2025 The Authors.

Spatial Quality Oriented Rate Control for Volumetric Video Streaming via Deep Reinforcement Learning

Volumetric videos offer an incredibly immersive viewing experience but encounters challenges in maintaining quality of experience (QoE) due to its ultra-high bandwidth requirements. One significant challenge stems from user’s spatial interactions, potentially leading to discrepancies between transmission bitrates and the actual quality of rendered viewports. In this study, we conduct comprehensive measurement experiments to investigate the impact of six degrees of freedom information on received video quality. Our results indicate that the correlation between spatial quality and transmission bitrates is influenced by the user’s viewing distance, exhibiting variability among users. To address this, we propose a spatial quality oriented rate control system, namely sparkle, that aims to satisfy spatial quality requirements while maximizing long-term QoE for volumetric video streaming services. Leveraging richer user interaction information, we devise a tailored learning-based algorithm to enhance long-term QoE. To address the complexity brought by richer state input and precise allocation, we integrate pre-constraints derived from three-dimensional displays to intervene action selection, efficiently reducing the action space and speeding up convergence. Extensive experimental results illustrate that sparkle significantly enhances the averaged QoE by up to 29% under practical network and user tracking scenarios. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Fruits also helps to regulate the water level in body as well as your blood sugar levels, which means that will usually feel hungry less often if we consumes a lot of fruits. The easier it is for people to recognize that a fruit is ripe and ready for selling at the market allows the farmers, in some cases, to sell their crop early before it would normally spoil. If we look closely, we see that many times people don't buy something because it appears rotten or way past its peak ripeness, which demonstrates how products spoil right on time. This study proposed a user-convenient system for fruit ripeness detection using the convolutional neural network (CNN) based on RipeNet structure. © 2025 IEEE.

With the popularization of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) in surveillance, delivery services, environmental monitoring, and increasingly other operational aspects, besides the need to take off and land, efficient traffic management becomes integral for assuring and securing further development and exploitation. Most of the existing traffic management systems for UAVs depend on traditional rule-based algorithms or simpler machine learning techniques, such as DQN or PPO. However, these systems also have enormous challenges: dynamic environments, high-density traffic, and robust decision-making over unpredictable weather and network conditions. In addition, the above traditional models usually experience difficulties in balancing exploration and exploitation, leading to suboptimal routing and enlarged collision risks in complicated urban airspaces. These challenges have driven us to develop a new proposal: a UA V traffic management framework based on Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN) combined with Instruction-Based Learning. In this approach, advanced learning for DDQN optimizes processes at decision-making points for UAVs. The model proposed herein, along with comprehensive simulations and quantitative analyses, demonstrated higher performance in terms of leadership and cumulative rewards while keeping lower training loss compared to the classical algorithms such as DQN, A3C, and PPO. At the same time, the DDQN model presented a better success rate (95%), as also reflected in the balanced precision-recall curve showing an area under the curve of 0.90, over others in the on-point prediction of UAVstate and safety margin of collision. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DDQN-based framework significantly enhances UA V traffic management by optimizing energy consumption in complex airspaces and reducing the risk of collision. © 2025 IEEE.

Leveraging Ensembles of Pre-trained CNNs for Improved Lung Cancer Detection and Classification

Lung cancer is a serious global health concern, highlighting the importance of early identification to improve patient survival rates. We explore the potential of deep learning(DL) models to improve lung cancer diagnosis through detection and classification models. The performance of pre-trained ResNet50, VGG19, and AlexNet models is evaluated on an augmented lung cancer image dataset to determine their suitability for lung cancer classification. The fine-tuned models are evaluated for their ability to identify and classify lung cancer, achieving high accuracy of 92.88%, 93.06%, and 95.23%. While promising, this approach has limitations. The efficacy of DL models is significantly influenced by both the quality and volume of the training data. Additionally, the ”black box” nature of DL models can make it challenging to understand their decision-making process. However, the results of this study suggest that DL ensembles hold significant potential for lung cancer diagnosis. Further research is necessary to address limitations and explore interpretability techniques for wider clinical acceptance.
