Beryllium-copper alloys, the most widely used copper alloys, are utilised extensively in diverse sectors, including the electrical, electronics, instrumentation, metallurgy, aerospace, automotive, petrochemical, machinery manufacturing, and die and mould-making industries. The main drawback of these alloys is that they produce the toxic component, beryllium oxide, which can lead to a chronic lung disease known as berylliosis. Beryllium-free copper alloys, such as copper-nickel-silicon-chromium, are eco-friendly, less costly, and possess properties similar to those of beryllium-copper alloys. Hence, they are now replacing beryllium-copper alloys in the applications mentioned earlier. Due to their high strength and hardness, these alloys are often fabricated into components using unconventional machining techniques, such as electrical discharge machining. Electrical discharge machining is particularly advantageous in industrial applications where precisely controlled random surface textures on these alloys are required. However, despite the industrial significance, research on the electrical discharge machining process of copper-nickel-silicon-chromium alloys is scarce. Therefore, the current work aims to address this research gap by conducting an experimental investigation of the random surfaces generated on copper-nickel-silicon-chromium alloy components after the die-sinking electrical discharge machining process through a comprehensive three-dimensional surface topography analysis. Three-dimensional surface topography parameters overcome the drawbacks of two-dimensional roughness parameters by considering the majority of surface points. This work investigates the effects of input factors, including electrode material, dielectric fluid material, flushing condition, and current on nearly all relevant areal texture (3D) parameters. In the context of Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS), the role of vehicle detection and classification is indispensable for streamlining transportation management, refining traffic control, and conducting in-depth accident analyses. However, the intricate task of accurately detecting multi-oriented vehicles in diverse scenarios remains a challenge, even with the advancements in ITS. Factors such as vehicle morphology, design, road conditions, structural details, and climatic variables provide a significant part in the detection. To address this, our study introduces an advanced YOLOv8n model, specifically the YOLOv8n-CGW, which is built upon pre-trained deep learning frameworks. This model is meticulously tailored to enhance the detection capabilities for multi-oriented vehicles. Comprehensive evaluations on esteemed datasets like MtV, MERGED, Custom dataset, DAWN, WEDGE, and UA-DETRAC underscore the superiority of our approach over existing models. Notably, our YOLOv8n-CGW model achieves a remarkable mAP of 83.3% and boasts a swift inference time of 0.0019s, setting a new benchmark in the domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This paper highlights the utilization of parallel control and adaptive dynamic programming(ADP) for event-triggered robust parallel optimal consensus control(ETRPOC) of uncertain nonlinear continuous-time multiagent systems(MASs).First, the parallel control system, which consists of a virtual control variable and a specific auxiliary variable obtained from the coupled Hamiltonian, allows general systems to be transformed into affine systems. Of interest is the fact that the parallel control technique's introduction provides an unprecedented perspective on eliminating the negative effects of disturbance. Then, an eventtriggered mechanism is adopted to save communication resources while ensuring the system's stability. The coupled HamiltonJacobi(HJ) equation's solution is approximated using a critic neural network(NN), whose weights are updated in response to events. Furthermore, theoretical analysis reveals that the weight estimation error is uniformly ultimately bounded(UUB). Finally,numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed ETRPOC method.

PneuX-Net: An Enhanced Feature Extraction and Transformation Approach for Pneumonia Detection in X-Ray Images

Pneumonia is a critical respiratory condition characterized by inflammation in the alveoli, leading to impaired gas exchange and severe respiratory distress. It poses a significant threat to high-risk populations, including neonates, geriatric patients, and immunocompromised individuals. Early and precise detection is crucial to optimizing treatment strategies and reducing morbidity and mortality rates. To address this problem, we propose PneuX-Net, an ensemble-based feature extraction framework that integrates multiple machine learning (ML) models Random Forest (RF), Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB) and K-Nearest Centroid (KNC). Random Forest (RF) builds multiple decision trees to identify complex, non-linear patterns within the feature space. Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB) utilizes a probabilistic framework based on Bayes’ theorem to manage uncertainty in feature distributions. K-Nearest Centroid (KNC) improves class distinction by clustering feature vectors according to their proximity to centroids. The ensemble methodology harnesses the complementary strengths of these models, improving feature representation and mitigating overfitting, a prevalent issue in white-box models. To validate the effectiveness of PneuX-Net, we conduct extensive experimentation using a 10-fold cross-validation approach. Our results demonstrate that the PneuX-Net+KNC model achieves a remarkable 99.91% accuracy, highlighting its robustness and reliability in pneumonia classification tasks. This ensemble-driven methodology underscores the potential of machine learning in augmenting clinical decision-making by providing an accurate and automated pneumonia detection framework. © 2013 IEEE.

Road accidents are a significant global issue, with human error causing a substantial number of collisions. This emphasizes the need for advanced collision avoidance systems to improve road safety. In response, this study integrates object detection and distance estimation techniques to enhance vehicle safety. Utilizing recent iterations of the YOLO architecture—YOLOv6n, YOLOv8n, YOLOv9t, and YOLOv10n—the models were trained and evaluated on the KITTI dataset, a benchmark suite for driving applications. This research study provides a comparative analysis of these models, focusing on performance metrics such as precision, mean average precision, recall, and F1 score. A novel single-camera distance estimation method was also implemented to assess object proximity accurately. Among the evaluated models, YOLOv8n achieved the best results, with a F1 score of 0.74 and a mAP@0.5 of 0.782, demonstrating superior detection accuracy and reliability. Its swift convergence and low training losses make it well-suited for real-world use cases. While YOLOv9t and YOLOv10n also performed well, they were slightly less effective. The system enhances its capabilities by accurately estimating distances, which improves collision avoidance and road safety applications. Overall, YOLOv8n is the most efficient and reliable option for developing advanced safety features in vehicle systems. © 2025 IEEE.

Real-Time On-Site Ground-Motion Prediction Using ResNet

On-site warnings can decrease the range of late alert zone during earthquakes. This study develops a deep learning model to predict whether the maximum peak ground acceleration at a station exceeds 25 Gal based on the waveform of the initial P-wave. A ResNet architecture model is developed to address the degradation problem in multilayered models, thereby enhancing performance. The model exhibits high performance for a test dataset, achieving F1-scores higher than 90% over various time windows, and outperforms the traditional progressive displacement value (Pdv) method and newer convolutional neural network (CNN) methods. Ground motion of two actual earthquakes are applied to test the model and validate its prediction capabilities, and the results indicate that the proposed model has higher accuracy and speed than Pdv and CNN methods. In addition, the model is integrated with the Earthworm earthquake early warning system for real-time waveform analysis and prediction, extending the model’s applicability beyond experimental stages to online systems. The proposed method is also tested using data from earthquakes that occurred in March 2023. © Seismological Society of America.

Network-Based Rail Running Band Anomaly Recognition via Recurrent Attention Graphs

Anomaly detection for rail running bands, the pattern of wheel–rail contact area, is crucial to analyze composite rail irregularities. This paper presents an all-weather vision-based solution for running-band inspection. However, two major algorithmic challenges restrict inspection effectiveness: 1) the identification of high-quality features for diversified and imbalanced data subject to noise and outliers, and 2) inferring implicit anomaly co-occurrence patterns. We regard overall running-band anomaly detection as a multi-label classification problem and develop a novel deep multi-anomaly recognition network via recurrent attention graphs (RAGRN). The proposed RAGRN consists of two fundamental components, each directly addressing the two major challenges of this paper: 1) Class-specific features are extracted for fine-grained discrimination via split-channel and gradient-guided class-specific attention mechanisms;2) We develop a multi-anomaly classifier, which effectively captures long-distance correlation features via a recurrent attention graph with visual and statistical guidance for graph propagation, containing prior statistical and image-specific information. The experiments and statistical analyses demonstrate that RAGRN outperforms all related state-of-the-art frameworks and has the potential to be applied to practical inspection. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Predefined-Time Event-Triggered Adaptive Tracking Control for Uncertain Time Delay Nonlinear systems

This paper raises a predefined-time event-triggered adaptive tracking controller for nonlinear systems with time delays. To mitigate the effects of time-varying delays, a Lyapunov-Krasovskii function is initially introduced. A set of adaptive laws and virtual controllers with switching functions are designed to avoid singularity phenomena. In addition, the event-triggered mechanism with the switching threshold can effectively conserve communication resources while avoiding the occurrence of Zeno behavior. It is theoretically demonstrated that, under the devised control strategy, the system output successfully tracks the reference signal with negligible tracking error within a specified time. Lastly, the validity of the raised control strategy is demonstrated through examples. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are developing so fast that they can bring revolutionary changes in ecological sustainability, public health, and community welfare. In contrast, the present waste management system has a set of inefficiencies due to some challenges, such as poor waste stream segregation, limited real-time data analysis, and negligible integration of recent technology. These challenges lead to environmental degradation, public health hazards, and inefficient usage of resources. This research targets these challenges by designing an IWM framework like AI-IoT for smart waste management. The system employs AI models powered by IoT sensors for efficient waste collection, classification, and optimization of recycling schedules. CNN (convolutional neural networks) with transfer learning enabled by Res-Net provides high-accuracy image recognition, which can be used for waste classification. Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) allow multilingual users to interact and communicate properly in any linguistic environment. Data collected from IoT-enabled smart bins is transmitted in real-time to a central control system for dynamic decision-making and follow-up analysis. A pilot exercise to verify the system's effectiveness was implemented in metropolitan settings to show the transformation: landfill dependency was decreased by 30 %, recycling efficiency was greatly increased to 90 %, and thus the cost of waste management was optimized. At the same time, environmental health inequity, causing pathogen-related threats, was reduced by 35 %. The model has an accuracy of 96.8 %. The features of the proposed framework not only provide solutions to the existing inefficiencies but also enhance scalability, cost-effectiveness, and global environmental standardization. AdaptHM: A Fully Adaptive Data Migration Strategy for Hybrid Memory systems

Data migration strategies (DMSs) improve the overall performance of hybrid memory systems by migrating frequently accessed (hot) data to faster memory. However, designing an efficient DMS is challenging since the key metrics of DMS - hot data selection, migration granularity, and migration frequency - are sensitive to access patterns of workloads. Most existing strategies focus on only one of these metrics and often overlook the crucial impact of access patterns, resulting in suboptimal performance and unnecessary migration traffic. In this article, we propose AdaptHM, a fully access-pattern-aware Adaptive DMS for Hybrid Memory systems. AdaptHM achieves adaptability on all three metrics through its unique multilevel data framework. First, AdaptHM adopts a group-level competition policy to select hot blocks, which responds faster to access patterns than threshold-based policies. Second, AdaptHM enables segment-level dynamic migration granularity by decoupling migration from remapping, which shows better-access pattern resilience than existing schemes with fixed-size global migration granularity. Third, AdaptHM adjusts the migration frequency at set-level by periodically assessing the migration benefit, avoiding unnecessary migrations. Experimental results demonstrate that AdaptHM improves the performance by an average of 12.78% and reduces energy consumption by up to 37.24% compared to the state-of-the-art scheme. © 1982-2012 IEEE.
