It is an important issue to preserve the consistent delivering order of messages at each site in distributed Virtual Environments(DVEs). Currently, the violations of message delivery order are inclined to happen in the large-scale and frequently interactive DVEs running on Wide Area Network(WAN). The inconsistent anomalies are characterized as unpredictable, unrepeatable and uncontrollable, which results in the severe problem for the development of the consistency control approaches. Meanwhile, it is also highly expensive to directly verify the proposed approaches on WAN. Therefore, in this paper, we design and establish an original multi-layered emulation platform in LAN, which can emulate the network latency of WAN and repeat the scenarios of violations. On the platform, the designers of consistency approaches don't have to spend efforts to realize the fundamental functions of the verification, but could pay more attention to the development and optimization of the control algorithms, which is very beneficial for the improvement of message ordering approaches.

Image defogging (IDF) removes influences of fogs from an image to improve its quality. Since defogged images can significantly boost the performance of subsequent processing, IDF has attracted many attentions from the computer vision community. However, existing IDF algorithms are built on the assumption that light is scattered once by a grain. Since such assumption is violated if images are contaminated by dense haze or heavy fog, traditional IDF algorithms often fail in this situation. In this paper, we propose a hybrid image defogging (HIDF) algorithm to overcome this deficiency. In particular, HIDF applies the single scattering physics model (SSPM) to pixels dominated by single scattering of light, and applies the multiple scattering physics model (MSPM) to remaining pixels. To distinguish two types of pixels, HIDF utilizes the optical thickness of corresponding pixels. If optical thickness is smaller than a threshold that determines whether the single scattering or the multiple scattering dominates, HIDF applies the SSPM, and HIDF applies the MSPM otherwise. Experimental results on several popular foggy images demonstrate that HIDF competes with the state-of-the-art algorithms, and show the promise of HIDF for defogging heavily foggy images.

Cloud computing provides a new paradigm for resource utilization and sharing. However, the reliability problems, like system failures, often happen in cloud systems and bring enormous loss. Trace-oriented monitoring is an important runtime method to improve the reliability of cloud systems. In this paper, we propose to bring runtime verification into trace-oriented monitoring, to facilitate the specification of monitoring requirements and to improve the efficiency of monitoring cloud systems. Based on a data set collected from a cloud storage system in a real environment, we validate our approach by monitoring the critical properties of the storage system. The preliminary experimental results indicate the promise of our approach.

HPDedup: A hybrid prioritized data deduplication mechanism for primary storage in the cloud

—Eliminating duplicate data in primary storage of clouds increases the cost-efficiency of cloud service providers as well as reduces the cost of users for using cloud services. Most existing primary deduplication techniques either use inline caching to exploit locality in primary workloads or use post-processing deduplication running in system idle time to avoid the negative impact on I/O performance. However, neither of them works well in the cloud servers running multiple services or applications for the following two reasons: Firstly, the temporal locality of duplicate data writes may not exist in some primary storage workloads thus inline caching often fails to achieve good deduplication ratio. Secondly, the post-processing deduplication allows duplicate data to be written into disks, therefore does not provide the benefit of I/O deduplication and requires high peak storage capacity. This paper presents HPDedup, a Hybrid Prioritized data Deduplication mechanism to deal with the storage system shared by applications running in co-located virtual machines or containers by fusing an inline and a post-processing process for exact deduplication. In the inline deduplication phase, HPDedup gives a fingerprint caching mechanism that estimates the temporal locality of duplicates in data streams from different VMs or applications and prioritizes the cache allocation for these streams based on the estimation. HPDedup also allows different deduplication threshold for streams based on their spatial locality to reduce the disk fragmentation. The post-processing phase removes duplicates whose fingerprints are not able to be cached due to weak temporal locality from disks. The hybrid deduplication mechanism significantly reduces the amount of redundant data written to the storage system while maintaining inline data writing performance. GNNRL-Smoothing: A Prior-Free Reinforcement Learning Model for Mesh Smoothing

Mesh smoothing methods can enhance mesh quality by eliminating distorted elements, leading to improved convergence in simulations. To balance the efficiency and robustness of traditional mesh smoothing process, previous approaches have employed supervised learning and reinforcement learning to train intelligent smoothing models. However, these methods heavily rely on labeled dataset or prior knowledge to guide the models’ learning. Furthermore, their limited capacity to enhance mesh connectivity often restricts the effectiveness of smoothing. In this paper, we first systematically analyze the learning mechanisms of recent intelligent smoothing methods and propose a prior-free reinforcement learning model for intelligent mesh smoothing. Our proposed model integrates graph neural networks with reinforcement learning to implement an intelligent node smoothing agent and introduces, for the first time, a mesh connectivity improvement agent. We formalize mesh optimization as a Markov Decision Process and successfully train both agents using Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient and Double Dueling Deep Q-Network in the absence of any prior data or knowledge. We verified the proposed model on both 2D and 3D meshes. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves feature-preserving smoothing on complex 3D surface meshes. It also achieves state-of-the-art results among intelligent smoothing methods on 2D meshes and is 7.16 times faster than traditional optimization-based smoothing methods. Moreover, the connectivity improvement agent can effectively enhance the quality distribution of the mesh. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper presents reuse-aware modulo scheduling to maximizing stream reuse and improving concurrency for stream-level loops running on stream processors. The novelty lies in the development of a new representation for an unrolled and software-pipelined stream-level loop using a set of reuse equations, resulting in simultaneous optimization of two performance objectives for the loop, reuse and concurrency, in a unified framework. We have implemented this work in the compiler developed for our 64-bit FT64 stream processor. Our experimental results obtained on FT64 and by simulation using nine representative stream applications demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Single-node computation speed is essential in large-scale parallel solutions of particle transport problems. The Intel Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture supports more than 200 hardware threads as well as 512-bit double precision float-point vector operations. In this paper, we use the native model of MIC in the parallelization of the simulation of one energy group time-independent deterministic discrete ordinates particle transport in 3D Cartesian geometry (Sweep3D). The implementation adopts both hardware threads and vector units in MIC to efficiently exploit multi-level parallelism in the discrete ordinates method when keeping good data locality. Our optimized implementation is verified on target MIC and can provide up to 1.99 times speedup based on the original MPI code on Intel Xeon E5-2660 CPU when flux fixup is off. Compared with the prior on NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPU, the speedup of up to 1.23 times is obtained. In addition, the difference between the implementations on MIC and GPU is discussed as well.

Audio Tagging by Cross Filtering Noisy Labels

—High quality labeled datasets have allowed deep learning to achieve impressive results on many sound analysis tasks. Yet, it is labor-intensive to accurately annotate large amount of audio data, and the dataset may contain noisy labels in the practical settings. Meanwhile, the deep neural networks are susceptive to those incorrect labeled data because of their outstanding memorization ability. In this paper, we present a novel framework, named CrossFilter, to combat the noisy labels problem for audio tagging. Multiple representations (such as, Logmel and MFCC) are used as the input of our framework for providing more complementary information of the audio. Then, though the cooperation and interaction of two neural networks, we divide the dataset into curated and noisy subsets by incrementally pick out the possibly correctly labeled data from the noisy data. Moreover, our approach leverages the multitask learning on curated and noisy subsets with different loss function to fully utilize the entire dataset. The noisy-robust loss function is employed to alleviate the adverse effects of incorrect labels. On both the audio tagging datasets FSDKaggle2018 and FSDKaggle2019, empirical results demonstrate the performance improvement compared with other competing approaches. On FSDKaggle2018 dataset, our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and even surpasses the ensemble models. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hierarchical routing algorithm for ad hoc networks using mobile VMN

One of the most significant challenges introduced by routing protocol in mobile networks is coping with the unpredictable motion and the unreliable behaviour of mobile nodes. In this paper, we present a hierarchical routing algorithm based on virtual mobile node (VMN). A routing path can be found rapidly by exchanging path information between VMNs without accurate topology information. We discuss the routing process and the implementing details of the proposed routing algorithm. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our hierarchical routing algorithm through simulations, and the results show that the number of mobile WAVE generated by routing algorithm is well satisfied with the quality of service (QoS) requirements of all source and destination nodes. Furthermore, we compare the performance on VMN failure and message delivery ratio using hierarchical and non-hierarchical routing approaches, the results show that we can obtain magnitude better performance by HRA-VMN than hierarchical state routing (HSR) and non-hierarchical routing approach.
