Quotient space theory of problem solving, a formal model of granular computing, is generalized in the sense that topological structure is replaced by Cech's closure space. Some basic issues of granular computing, such as the representation of real world at different levels of granularity, property preserving and the construction of granular world, are discussed in detail. It turns out that most of conclusions of the classical quotient space theory keep being valid, so intension and applicable fields are enriched and enlarged respectively.

Nonhomogeneous and nonstationary training data are two of the key technical challenges facing space-time adaptive processing (STAP) for target detection using space-based radar. We describe a technique for training data selection that seeks to classify the available data in a reduced-rank subspace based on the multistage Wiener filter (MWF). The method builds on previous work by allowing each data sample to associate with multiple covariance classes within the separate subspaces defined by the signal and the class, thereby enabling larger sample support for each class. Performance of the new method is assessed using simulated data based on a monostatic space-based radar scenario. Comparison is made with conventional training data selection techniques

A novel constant modulus blind equalization algorithm with accelerated convergence is presented. This algorithm is derived using the concept of set-membership filtering (SMF). They includetwo constraint sets in order to construct a space of feasible solutions for the coefficient updates. It means that two data reuses can accelerate the convergence rate and the data-selective updates can provide low-excess mean-squared error (MSE).

This paper introduces the independent sample mean square error (ISMSE) as an important factor in computing the adaptive matched filter (AMF) constant false-alarm rate (CFAR) detection statistic. It has been shown that the ISMSE is a cross-validation metric that is useful for determining the optimum rank of the multistage Wiener filter (MWF) subspace. This is because it gives a more accurate estimate of the true ensemble mean squared error (MSE) provided by a Wiener filter, as compared to the standard least squares sample mean squared error (SMSE). The innovation described herein directly exploits this improved MSE estimator within the AMF calculation. Together with the reduced rank MWF solution, this results in improved detection performance in low sample support environments. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are generated using Monte Carlo simulations and used to assess performance against the full rank approach

This paper proposes an approach for cross-modal user interface design using interaction patterns. A meta-domain is introduced in which the user interface can be designed without the determination of its realisation in a particular interaction domain. When fully described in the meta-domain, the user interface can be realised in different domains (visual, auditory, tactile etc) exploiting the strengths of each different mode to its maximum. The paper proposes a set of interaction patterns along with visual and auditory realisations. To prove the concept, a prototype was designed for a real-world application, Microsoft Explorer. An auditory display prototype was developed making extensive use of virtual audio environments for non-visual visualisation of objects in the Explorer interface, taking advantage of a spatial layout. The prototype was evaluated with visually impaired, blind and sighted computer users.

In this paper, we present a two-stage noise spectra estimation approach. After the first-stage noise estimation using the improved minima controlled recursive averaging (IMCRA) method, the second-stage noise estimation is performed by employing a maximum a posteriori (MAP) noise amplitude estimator. We also develop a regression-based speech enhance system by approximating the clean speech with the estimated noise and original noisy speech. Evaluation experiments show that the proposed two-stage noise estimation method results in lower estimation error for all test noise types. Compared to original noisy speech, the proposed regression-based approach obtains an average relative word error rate (WER) reduction of 65% in our isolated word recognition experiments conducted in 12 real car environments.

This paper studies the power spectrum density (PSD) of ultra wideband (UWB) time hopping (TH) multi-user aggregate signals with asynchronous transmission and with synchronous transmission. TH codes under consideration are deterministic period code and random integer code. Two UWB modulations, TH pulse position modulation (PPM) and TH pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), are considered in this paper. The distribution of the time delay of UWB asynchronous transmission can dominate the PSD of aggregate signals. The main system parameters, which determine the PSD of UWB aggregate signals, are investigated in detail.

This paper proposes a detection method of moving ships from the navigational image sequence that was taken with cameras installed on the bridge of the ship. The image is influenced by roll and pitch of the ship. Therefore, usual technique of image processing cannot be used such as Finite Difference method. Moreover, as many sea waves appear in the images, the image cannot be dealt without rejecting sea waves. The technique in this paper proposes how to get rid of the influence of roll, pitch and sea waves. After that, we detect the ships. An interval between each of the frames is one-thirty second in this experiment. The size of the images is 640 pixels in width and 480 pixels in height. At first, the frames are segmented into about 5000 regions using brightness value of the image. About 100 regions were estimated with the ship. Each region was matched with another two frames, which passed 0.33 second and 0.66 second. 0.33 second corresponds to 10 frames. The movement of the ship is less than 50 pixels in this interval. The SSDA method is used for matching processing to be more efficiently. Both the coordinate points of an original region and the matched one are recorded on the table. It is used to calculate the deflection, the speed and the direction of the moving vector of each region. The ships can be detected with these parameters. The detected ships can be displayed clearly as a result of processing. We have taken a lot of video images in Tokyo Bay and Tokyo Port. It becomes possible to show that the ships can be detected from the video images.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are characterized by the unpredictable change in the quality of wireless communication due to node movement and failure. To cope with such a special characteristic, various ant-based routing algorithms have been proposed for MANET. However, these algorithms still have several problems unsolved, including the congestion problem and the shortcut problem. In this paper, we present a new ant-based routing algorithm, called ant-based routing algorithm with admission control and noise encouraged route-selection (ARACNE). The algorithm adopts two mechanisms, called admission control (AC) and noise encouraged route-selection (NE), to solve the congestion problem and the shortcut problem, respectively. Simulation results show that both mechanisms can improve the performance of ant-based routing algorithm for MANET by reducing the routing overhead and increasing the packet delivery rate.

Inspired by the foraging behaviors of real ants, an ant-based routing algorithm for mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) should adapt the special characteristics of the networks. It should be self-configurable, self-built and distributed. In this paper, we present a bi-directional and hop-by-hop pheromone-updated ant-based routing (BHPAR) algorithm for MANET. The algorithm can accelerate the convergence rate of the existing ant-based routing algorithms and improve the response speed to abnormal cases in MANET. Besides, BHPAR provides redundant paths for routing and thus improves the reliability and survivability of the network. Simulation results show that BHPAR performs well in average end-to-end delay and routing overhead as well as packet delivery rate.
