A novel time-varying subband transform with projection-based reconstruction and its application in image coding are introduced. At each time instance (block), the transform to be applied is chosen from a given set of orthogonal subband transforms according to a certain criterion. The reconstruction from the transformed coefficients is possible by applying the theory of convex projections (POCS). We introduce convex sets for perfect reconstruction from the transformed vector. We further propose other convex sets which assure smoothness of plane regions in the decoded image. Experimental results show that the use of multiple subband transforms leads to the improvement of coding performance compared to the use of single transform.

The theory and design for a novel class of a variable-length lapped transform are presented. In this class, the synthesis filter bank is firstly defined with arbitrary combination of FIR filters, giving much freedom of design compared to previously presented variable-length lapped transforms. The analysis filter bank is then obtained as the inverse of the synthesis bank by the Neumann series expansion to achieve the perfect reconstruction. Moreover, by introducing a unitary transform, we improve the compression performance of the analysis bank. We provide several design examples and experimental results of image coding, which show that the proposed transform is promising and comparable with conventional subband transforms including wavelets.

The ultra wideband (UWB) interference to code division multiple access (CDMA) system is analyzed. Two popular UWB modulation schemes, the time hopping pulse position modulation (TH-PPM) and time hopping pulse amplitude modulation (TH-PAM), are considered. The pulse repetition rate (PRR) of UWB impulse radio signal and the frequency band of the CDMA system play the primary roles in the BER performance of the CDMA system receiver in the presence of UWB interference. The characteristics of an aggregation of multiple UWB signals are somehow different from that of a single UWB device, especially for the TH-PPM scheme, where discrete spectral lines maybe exist in the band of CDMA system receiver. The system parameters of TH-PPM such as the modulation index and maximum shift incurred by the time hopping code determine the amplitude of the discrete spectral lines. In multiuser case of TH-PPM, sometimes one discrete spectral line in the band of CDMA system receiver should degrade the BER performance dramatically. It is observed by theoretical analysis and simulations that the interference to CDMA system receiver from single UWB device is very little in common case.

In this paper, we attempt to develop an efficient and accurate algorithm for joint time delay and pitch estimation of a speech signal received at a microphone array. The time delay measurement allows a speaker to be located while the detection of the pitch frequency is useful for analyzing the acoustic properties of the sound. A subspace method based on state-space realization is first introduced for joint time delay and frequency estimation of a synthetic signal consisting of several frequency components. The frequency estimates are obtained directly from the eigenvalues of the state transition matrix whilst the time delay is approximated from the observation matrix and the estimated frequencies using a least square approach. The method is then extended to track both the time delay and pitch frequency of a speech signal, which is modeled by a summation of sinusoids that are harmonically related to the fundamental frequency (pitch) and spectrally shaped by the vocal tract transfer function. Extensive simulation tests have been done to validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

In several applications such as denoising, when signal expansion is not crucial, oversampled filter banks may outperform critically decimated filter banks. We study the performance of the recently proposed GLPBT (Generalized Lapped Pseudo-Biorthogonal Transform), a class of oversampled filter banks, on noise removal in seismic data, using controlled redundancy. We also investigate heuristics for the choice of an optimal threshold, which appears to depend non-trivially on the noise variance. Tests indicate that carefully designed oversampled filter banks are able to outperform critically sampled ones.

High frequency (HF) interference in surface wave over-the-horizon (OTH) radars typically exhibits a time-varying or non-stationary spatial structure. Adaptive beamformers that update the spatial filtering weight vector within the coherent processing interval (CPI) are likely to suppress such interference most effectively, but the intra-CPI antenna pattern fluctuations result in temporal de-correlation of the clutter which severely degrades sub-clutter visibility after Doppler processing. A robust adaptive beamformer that effectively suppresses non-stationary interference without degrading sub-clutter visibility is proposed. The new algorithm is computationally efficient and suitable for practical implementation. Its operational performance is evaluated using experimental data recorded by the Iluka HF surface wave (HFSW) OTH radar, located near Darwin in far north Australia.

Gene selection, cancer classification and functional gene classification are three main concerns and interests by biologists for cancer detection, cancer classification, and understanding the functions of genes from the molecular level of tissues, where the large number of genes and relatively small number of experiments in gene expression data generate a great challenge. After a brief introduction of support vector machine(SVM) for classification, this paper presents recent SVM approaches for gene selection, cancer classification and functional gene classification followed by analysis on the advantages and limitations of SVM on these applications.

In this paper we present a methodology on how to use directive elements in an adaptive array methodology. Typically one uses isotropic elements having practically no gain then the signal level is increased by putting hundreds and thousands of these elements together. In this paper we demonstrate a methodology where the elements can be arbitrarily spaced and may even be non-planar. In addition it is shown how to deal with nonuniformly spaced and non-planar arrays. We illustrate these principles in a direction of arrival (DOA) estimation utilizing directive elements.

Adaptive spatial filtering is applied in modern surveillance radar systems to improve the detection and localisation of desired signals embedded in severe and dynamic interference from clutter as well as jamming. In practical situations of interest, the interference can only be cancelled to sufficiently low levels by significantly compromising the sidelobe response of the adapted pattern. Attempts to effectively stabilise the sidelobes, by means of diagonal loading or rank-reduction for example, gives rise to suboptimal patterns which potentially lead to intolerable degradations in interference suppression. On the other hand, the application of an adaptive pattern with unregularised sidelobes to a test cell containing a signal that is not incident from the system steer direction may cause an unwanted detection or false alarm. This paper proposes a data-dependent training strategy for adaptive spatial filters which provide enhanced interference rejection with a reduced likelihood of false alarms while simultaneously avoiding target self-nulling when the beam is pointed in the signal direction.
