Searching for high-performance thermoelectric (TE) materials in the paradigm of narrow-bandgap semiconductors has lasted for nearly 70 years and is obviously hampered by a bottleneck of research now1. Here we report on the discovery of a few metallic compounds, TiFexCu2x-1Sb (x = 0.70, 0,75, 0.80) and TiFe1.33Sb, showing the thermopower exceeding many TE semiconductors and the dimensionless figure of merits zTs comparable with the state-of-the-art TE materials. A quasi-linear temperature (T) dependence of electrical resistivity in 2 K - 700 K and the logarithmic T-dependent electronic specific heat at low temperature are also observed to coexist with the high thermopower, highlighting the strong intercoupling of the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) quantum critical behavior2 of electrons with TE transports. Electronic structure analysis reveals the existence of fluctuating Fe-eg-related local magnetic moments, Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction at the nearest 4c-4d sites, and two-fold degenerate eg orbitals antiferromagnetically coupled with the dual-type itinerant electrons close to the Fermi level, all of which infer to a competition between the AFM ordering and Kondo-like spin compensation as well as a parallel two-channel Kondo effect. These effects are both strongly meditated by the structural disorder due to the random filling of Fe/Cu at the equivalent 4c/4d sites of the Heusler crystal lattice. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility deviates from ideal antiferromagnetism but can be fitted well by x(T) = 1/(θ + BTα), seemingly being consistent with the quantum critical scenario of strong local correlation as discussed before3-5. Our work not only breaks the dilemma that the promising TE materials should be heavily-doped semiconductors, but also demonstrates the correlation among high TE performance, NFL quantum criticality, and magnetic fluctuation, which opens up new directions for future research. The critical heat flux (CHF) corresponding to the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) is a regulatory limit for licensing of pressurized water reactors. Under DNB conditions, the heated surface is permanently blanketed by a vapor film, leading to a sharp deterioration of the heat transfer coefficient at the heater/coolant interface and an abrupt temperature rise. Unfortunately, the path for an accurate, robust prediction of DNB has been elusive due to lack of consensus on its triggering mechanism. This work reviews existing physics-driven modeling tools. An evolutionary channel-scale mechanistic model that leverages key assumptions in the relatively well-accepted mechanisms of liquid sublayer dryout and near-wall bubble crowding is then proposed. Detailed validation of the proposed model has demonstrated its improved predictive capabilities over previous data/physics-driven models for an extensive DNB-specific CHF test matrix covering a wide range of flow conditions. The unique feature of the proposed model lies in its ability to predict DNB without recalibration for different heater geometries (including round tube, annulus, and rod bundle), which is essential in deciphering fuel performance metrics from different facilities and reactor types. The proposed model will be implemented in fuel performance codes to help improve modeling of transient DNB scenarios such as during a reactivity-initiated accident. For the high-precision control problem of multi-load coupled tracking systems under foundation motion excitation, the multi-load coupled tracking system is simplified into two independent sets of two inertia servo systems through forward and inverse kinematics solutions. The nonlinear dynamic models of the system with lumped uncertainty are derived and the lumped uncertainty is estimated using a class of BP neural networks. The neural adaptive controller for a multi-load coupled tracking system under foundation motion excitation is designed to achieve decoupling control of the system. On this basis, a naval gun is set as the verification object. The mechanical–electrical-hydraulic coupling dynamic model of the naval gun and the random foundation motion model of the pedestal are established. The effectiveness of the research method in the paper is verified through the application simulation on the naval gun pointing control problem under the foundation motion excitation of the warship. The research provides technical references for high-precision control of multi-load coupled tracking systems under foundation motion excitations such as naval guns and wave compensation gangways.

A laboratory experiment was conducted, in which varies scene composed of typical audio and visual elements in the public spaces of shopping malls. The participants were asked to answer questionnaires about the audio-visual scenes with which they were presented. It was found that the visual environment had little influence on people's evaluation of the auditory environment but had a significant influence on their perception of auditory elements in different types of spaces. When the visual element is consistent with the specific auditory element that conveys the same information, the percentage of correct recognition of the auditory elements decreases. Overall, the results suggest that people perceive the environment as a whole, instead of disassembling the perception into several elements. © Proceedings of 2020 International Congress on Noise Control Engineering, INTER-NOISE 2020. Two-dimensional (2D) Van der Waals ferromagnets carry the promise of ultimately miniature spintronics and information storage devices.1,2 Among the newly discovered 2D ferromagnets all inherit the magnetic ordering from their bulk ancestors.3-5 Here we report a new 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor at room temperature, 2H phase vanadium diselenide (VSe2) which show ferromagnetic at 2D form only. This unique 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor manifests an enhanced magnetic ordering owing to structural anisotropy at 2D limit. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Federated Learning over Coupled Graphs

Graphs are widely used to represent the relations among entities. When one owns the complete data, an entire graph can be easily built, therefore performing analysis on the graph is straightforward. However, in many scenarios, it is impractical to centralize the data due to data privacy concerns. An organization or party only keeps a part of the whole graph data, i.e., graph data is isolated from different parties. Recently, Federated Learning (FL) has been proposed to solve the data isolation issue, mainly for Euclidean data. It is still a challenge to apply FL on graph data because graphs contain topological information which is notorious for its non-IID nature and is hard to partition. In this work, we propose a novel FL framework for graph data, FedCog, to efficiently handle coupled graphs that are a kind of distributed graph data, but widely exist in a variety of real-world applications such as mobile carriers’ communication networks and banks’ transaction networks. We theoretically prove the correctness and security of FedCog. Experimental results demonstrate that our method FedCog significantly outperforms traditional FL methods on graphs. Remarkably, our FedCog improves the accuracy of node classification tasks by up to 14.7%. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this Short Communication, the corrigendum of our former publication in 2019 entitled " Effects of sample length on the transient measurement results of water vapor diffusion coefficient of porous building materials: A case study of autoclave aerated concrete (AAC) with various porosities" is involved. Specially, the conclusion that sample lengths have a crucial effect on the water vapour diffusivities obtained by a dynamic measurement method proposed in 2011 is no longer reliable, given that a recent critique has however shown that that method is defective. This corrigendum first involved a few auxiliary corrections with respect to all water vapour permeabilities and fitting coefficients of sorption isotherm, and then employed the correct approach to re-process the original data in order to establish the correct diffusivities. The updated diffusivity outcomes indeed invalided our former conclusions, indicating little effect of the sample length on the measurement results. Meanwhile, the diffusivities were transformed into permeabilities through the sorption isotherms in order to compare with the steady-steady state based permeabilities. The transient permeabilities were found to have good agreement with each other as well, but were found to be a little bit overestimated as compared with their steady-state counterparts. © 2023, The Authors. In this paper,a crystal plasticity model considering the irradiation effect based on the thermal activation theory is *** evolutions of screw dislocations,edge dislocations,and stacking fault tetrahedrals(SFTs)(induced by irradiation)are included into the *** interactions between dislocations and irradiation-induced SFTs are also *** constitutive model is numerically implemented on the ABAQUS platform through UMAT subroutine and applied to study the irradiation effect on the mechanical behavior of pure *** mechanical properties of single and polycrystalline copper are studied,and the simulation results show that the constitutive model can properly predict the mechanical behavior of irradiated pure *** for polycrystalline copper,the simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Nanotechnology has revolutionized modern healthcare by providing innovative solutions for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of various medical conditions. The unique biological, chemical, and mechanical attributes of nanomaterials have favoured their use for various medical applications, including drug delivery, tissue engineering, implantable devices, bio-molecular detection, and diagnostics. However, potential risks associated with nanomaterial usage on health and environment raised concerns regarding their safety and regulatory oversight. Focusing exclusively on nanomaterial design with less attention towards nano-bio interaction has become a significant bottleneck to their clinical translation. This review aims to provide a concise overview of the characteristics of nanomaterials which find exciting applications in biological and biomedical fields. More importantly, we put forth the current regulation status of these advanced materials, highlighting the potential challenges and uncertainties in the regulatory assessment, and discussing potential strategies for effective regulation. A robust regulatory framework will allow a smooth clinical translation of such materials without compromising patient safety.
