Silicon photodetectors are highly desirable for their CMOS compatibility, low cost, and fast response speed. However, their application the infrared (IR) is limited by silicon’s intrinsic bandgap, which restricts its detection to photons with wavelengths shorter than 1.1 μm. Although several methods have been developed to extend silicon photodetectors further in the IR range, these approaches often introduce additional challenges, such as increased fabrication complexity and compatibility issues with standard CMOS processes. Here, we present an approach to overcome these limitations by integrating disordered metasurfaces with upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), enabling IR detection by silicon photodetectors. The disordered design consists of hybrid Mie-plasmonic cavities, which can enhance both the near-field localization and wide-band light absorption from visible to IR, improving photocurrent conversion. Compared to ordered structures, the infrared absorption and near field of the highly disordered configuration are increased by 2.6-folds and 3.9-folds, respectively. UCNPs not only convert near-infrared photons into visible light but also enhance absorption in the mid-infrared range, thereby improving hot electron generation. The measured responsivity of the disordered element for 1550 nm laser is up to 0.22 A/W at room temperature, corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of 17.6%. Our design not only enhances the photocurrent performance significantly, but also extends the working wavelength of silicon photodetectors to IR wavelength, making them suitable for broad spectrum applications. © 2025, CC BY.

This study delves into the formation and rheological properties of soy protein isolate-based emulsion microgels (SPI-EMG) with a focus on the influence of varying calcium sulfate (CaSO4) concentrations. SPI-EMG have emerged as promising carriers for encapsulating lipophilic compounds, thereby enhancing stability and nutrient delivery. The research systematically investigates the effects of CaSO4 concentration on the characteristics of SPI-EMG, shedding light on their formation mechanisms. The results reveal that altering CaSO4 concentrations leads to significant variations in EMG size, stability, and rheological behavior. Importantly, EMG structures exhibit partial disruption under shear conditions but manage to maintain their elasticity, further showcasing their recovery capacity. These findings hold great promise for applications involving the protection of lipophilic compounds and the improvement of nutrient delivery systems, offering a valuable contribution to the realm of food science and technology. © 2023, The Authors. The Regulation Effect of Urban Green Space on Air Particulate Matter Concentration Under Different Matrices in Xi'An City

Urban green space can effectively alleviate air pollution, in which vegetation structure plays an important role. According to the typical characteristics of landscape patterns and different coverage ratios of green areas in Xi’an city, China, the matrices of urban landscape were divided into three types, which include "green space", "grey-green mixed space" and "gray space." In each environmental background, urban green space was divided into three levels: horizontal structure, species composition and vertical structure. Subsequently, 13 types of green spaces with different vegetation structures and three hard (no vegetation present) squares as control groups were selected. A one-year on-site monitoring was conducted on urban green spaces and concentrations of TSP, PM10, PM2.5 and PM1. The results showed that: (1) In the green space, the concentrations of PM1 and PM2.5 were relatively higher. In the grey-green mixed space, the average concentration of air particle of all four particle sizes was the lowest. In the gray space, the concentrations of PM10 and TSP were more concentrated. (2) Under the same matrices, due to the different locations of the plots, the concentration of air particles of different sizes was significantly different. Under the different urban environmental backgrounds, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and air pressure all showed the same trend in the change of air particle concentration. (3)The one-layer green space structure was most suitable for planting. Considering the green space, the coniferous one-layered green space (CO) structure was recommended. The partly-closed broad-leaved one-layered green space (P-CBO) was found to be more suitable for the grey-green mixed space. Considering the gray space in the city center, it was suggested to plant the closed mixed coniferous and broad-leaved one-layered green space (CMO) structure. Prediction of serious eye damage or eye irritation potential of compounds via consensus labelling models and active learning models based on uncertainty strategies

Serious eye damage and eye irritation have been authenticated to be significant human health issues in various fields such as ophthalmic pharmaceuticals. Due to the shortcomings of traditional animal testing methods, in silico methods have advanced to study eye toxicity. The models for predicting serious eye damage and eye irritation potential of compounds were developed using 2299 and 5214 compounds, respectively. The 40 global single models and 40 local models were developed by combining 5 molecular description methods and 4 machine learning methods. The 40 active learning models were developed by adopting uncertainty-based active learning strategies and taking local models as initial models. The 110 global consensus models based on 40 global single models were developed using a consensus strategy. Active learning models and global consensus models performed high prediction accuracy. The test accuracy of the best serious eye damage model and eye irritation model reached 0.972 and 0.959, respectively. The applicability domains for all models were calculated to verify the rationality of prediction effect. In addition, 8 structural alerts probably causing serious eye damage or eye irritation were sought out. The prediction models and structural alerts contributed to providing hazard identification and assessing chemical safety. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Secure ISAC MIMO Systems: Exploiting Interference With Bayesian Cramér-Rao Bound Optimization

In this paper, we present a signaling design for secure integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems comprising a dual-functional multi-input multi-output (MIMO) base station (BS) that simultaneously communicates with multiple users while detecting targets present in their vicinity, which are regarded as potential eavesdroppers. In particular, assuming that the distribution of each parameter to be estimated is known a priori, we focus on optimizing the targets’ sensing performance. To this end, we derive and minimize the Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound (BCRB), while ensuring certain communication quality of service (QoS) by exploiting constructive interference (CI). The latter scheme enforces that the received signals at the eavesdropping targets fall into the destructive region of the signal constellation, to deteriorate their decoding probability, thus enhancing the ISAC’s system physical-layer security (PLS) capability. To tackle the nonconvexity of the formulated problem, a tailored successive convex approximation method is proposed for its efficient solution. Our extensive numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed secure ISAC design showing that the proposed algorithm outperforms block-level precoding techniques. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Perception and drivers of cultural ecosystem services in waterfront green spaces: Insights from social media text analysis

With urbanization accelerating, waterfront green spaces—as critical interfaces between nature and human systems—play an essential role in delivering cultural ecosystem services (CES) that support sustainable urban development. This study employed content analysis and text mining techniques on social media platforms to collect 102,586 user-generated comments on 51 waterfront green spaces along the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek in Shanghai, China. We constructed CES and landscape element dictionaries, applied sentiment analysis to measure emotional responses, and classified user reviews by CES frequency. Key influencing factors were identified through multiple linear regression. The findings reveal that: (1) Ten CES categories were identified, and the public generally expressed a positive attitude toward the CES provided by waterfront green spaces, with an average satisfaction score of 90.14 %. The perception frequencies of recreation (0.68), aesthetic (0.67), and naturalist (0.62) emerged as the primary motivations for visitation;(2) Waterfront green spaces were categorized into four types based on CES perception frequencies: history and culture-led, sports and health-led, naturalist-led, and CES-balanced spaces;(3) Key factors influencing public satisfaction were identified. Among natural landscape elements, flowers and lawns, water bodies, and topography and rocking formations contributed to satisfaction in three CES categories. Among artificial elements, roads and squares, built structures, and transportation facilities were linked to satisfaction in five, four, and three CES categories, respectively. Interestingly, pets also emerged as a notable factor, contributing to satisfaction in five CES categories. This study provides empirical insights into public CES preferences and offers practical guidance for the planning and management of waterfront green spaces. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties were studied in a stuffed honeycomb polycrystalline antiferromagnet GdInO3. The onset temperature of antiferromagnetic ordering was observed at ~ 2.1 K. Negligible thermal and magnetic hysteresis suggest a reversible magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the GdInO3 compound. In the magnetic field changes of 0–50 kOe and 0–70 kOe, the maximum magnetic entropy change values are 9.65 J/kg K and 18.37 J/kg K, respectively, near the liquid helium temperature, with the corresponding relative cooling power values of 115.01 J/kg and 211.31 J/kg. The MCE investigation of the polycrystalline GdInO3 serves to illuminate more exotic properties in this frustrated stuffed honeycomb magnetic system. © 2021, CC BY.

The excellent strength-ductility combination of hetero-grained Mg alloys has been reported to stem from pronounced hetero-deformation induced (HDI) stress. This stress alters the internal stress state of various slip systems and triggers significant activity of non-basal slips. However, the HDI stress state of different slip systems, and the mechanisms underlying the selective activation between basal and non-basal slips remain unclear to date. This study develops a novel HDI stress partitioning framework that in-situ calculates the crystallographic parameters and geometrical information of each datapoint within grains, aiming to reveal the correlation between HDI stress partitioning on individual slip systems and localized deformation model in the case of bimodal-grained ZK60 alloy. The framework demonstrates that HDI stress shows a strong dependence on the density of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) and slip-system-level grain size, while exhibiting a relatively weaker correlation with equivalent-circle size of the hetero-grains. Given the close relation between the stress partitioning and the physical parameters, the framework can accurately predict the single and multiple slip activity fields obtained from high-resolution digital image correlation (HR-DIC). This holds even for slip systems with low Schmid factors, which are theoretically difficult to activate. Using this framework, it is found that HDI stress plays a more prominent role in diminishing the effective resolved shear stress (RSS) of basal 〈a〉 and prismatic 〈a〉 (i.e., 〈a〉 component) dislocations, while having a negligible effect on pyramidal 〈c + a〉 slips. Benefiting from the increased ratio of RSSc+a>/RSSa>, pyramidal 〈c + a〉 dislocations are extensively activated, leading to excellent strength-ductility combination in the bimodal-grained ZK60 alloy. © 2025

During the working process of the fuze insurance institution, the metal coil spring as a resistance element may cause failure due to fatigue fracture and stress creep relaxation, thereby affecting the reliability and stability of the fuze safety system. To solve this problem, a kind of variable stiffness spring with negative stiffness characteristic is proposed in this paper, which is composed of two magnets. This spring has the advantages of simple structure and rich stiffness characteristics.
