A compact fluorescence/circular dichroism dual-modality probe for detection, differentiation, and detoxification of multiple heavy metal ions via bond-cleavage cascade reactions

Selective detection of multiple analytes in a compact design with dual-modality and theranostic features presents great challenges. Herein, we wish to report a coumarin-thiazolidine masked D-penicillamine based dual-modality fluorescent probe COU-DPA-1 for selective detection, differentiation, and detoxification of multiple heavy metal ions(Ag^(+), Hg^(2+), Cu^(2+)). The probe shows divergent fluorescence(FL)/circular dichroism(CD) responses via divergent bond-cleavage cascade reactions(metal ion promoted C-S cleavage and hydrolysis at two distinctive cleavage sites): FL “turn-off” and CD “turn-on” for Ag+(no hydrolysis), FL “turn-on” and CD “turn-off” for Hg^(+)(imine hydrolysis), and FL “self-threshold ratiometric” and CD “turn-off” for excess Cu^(2+)(lactone and imine hydrolysis), providing the first example of a fluorescence/CD dual-modality probe for multiple species with complimentary responses. Moreover, the bond-cleavage cascade reactions also lead to the formation of D-penicillamine heavy metal ion complexes for potential detoxification treatments.

In this study, custom-designed biocompatible Fluorescent Polymeric Nano Thermometers (FPNTs), are capable of operating with a wide temperature sensing range (25 to 100 °C) and are stable in pH, ionic strength, and oxidative stress. The FPNTs (180±17 nm) with persistent fluorescence are composed of temperature-sensitive rhodamine B (Rh-B) fluorophore and F-127 polymer which was conjugated and cross-linked with Urea-Paraformaldehyde resins using sol-gel method which were utilized to monitor the temperature gradient in co-cultured 3D tumor spheroids and the temperature difference between the core to the periphery was 2.9 °C. © 2023 IEEJ.

This paper proposes a meta-learning and reinforcement-learning based control system"Cerebellum" for robotic arms to address the issue of adapting to hardware parameter changes. By leveraging the concept of meta-learning, the system achieves adaptive control by learning from few samples. Experimental results show our"Cerebellum" reach 90.09% accuracy in a simulation environment with controlling newly unseen robotic arm. However, challenges remain in hardware experiments due to image distortions and Mechanical collide issues. Further research is needed to overcome these challenges. © 2023, CC BY.

In this study, a new concept of a wheelchair-towing robot for the facile electrification of manual wheelchairs is introduced. The development of this concept includes the design of towing robot hardware and an autonomous driving algorithm to ensure the safe transportation of patients to their intended destinations inside the hospital. We developed a novel docking mechanism to facilitate easy docking and separation between the towing robot and the manual wheelchair, which is connected to the front caster wheel of the manual wheelchair. The towing robot has a mecanum wheel drive, enabling the robot to move with a high degree of freedom in the standalone driving mode while adhering to kinematic constraints in the docking mode. Our novel towing robot features a camera sensor that can observe the ground ahead which allows the robot to autonomously follow color-coded wayfinding lanes installed in hospital corridors. This study introduces dedicated image processing techniques for capturing the lanes and control algorithms for effectively tracing a path to achieve autonomous path following. The autonomous towing performance of our proposed platform was validated by a real-world experiment in which a hospital environment with colored lanes was created. This work studies the average Age of Information (AoI) of a remote monitoring system in which two sensors observe the same physical process and update the status to a common monitor using orthogonal channels. While using redundant devices to update the status of a process can improve the information timeliness at the monitor, the out-of-order arrivals of updates impose a challenge to the AoI analysis. We first model the system as two parallel M/M/1/1 queues. By leveraging tools from stochastic hybrid systems, we obtain analytically the average AoI of the system. In particular, when the arrival or service rates are the same for the two sensors, the average AoI is given in closed form. Our analysis reveals that the average AoI of the considered system is reduced by 16.44% compared to the single-sensor system when the arrival and service rates are equal to 1. Numerical results show that the considered system outperforms the M/M/2 system in average AoI at high arrival rates.

Emerging interaction-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications have stringent demand for timeliness, imposing critical challenges to the design of status update system. Using redundant devices to update the status of the same process is a promising way to improve timeliness, but this approach can result in out of order update arrivals, making it difficult to analyze timeliness. To that end, the present paper conducts a theoretical study toward the Age of Information (AoI) of a multi-queue status update system where multiple sensors observe one physical process and update a common monitor. Based on the stochastic hybrid systems method, the average AoI of the considered system is derived in closed form. The theoretical results are consistent with the simulation results, verifying the correctness of the theoretical analysis. It is shown that the logarithm of the average AoI is linearly decreasing with the logarithm of the number of sensors.

After the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, many institutions around the world developed the development of accident-tolerant fuel (ATF). Many institutions in China have been conducting research and development on accident tolerant fuels. NPIC plays the most important role in the CNNC Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) program, which aims to develop advanced fuels and claddings that have improved performance under normal conditions, design basis accidents (DBA) and beyond design basis accidents (BDBA). Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, FeCrAl stainless steel has become one of the most important ATF cladding concepts. The FeCrAl concept provides the operator with some extra coping time to deal with accident conditions compared to traditional zirconium-based cladding. Uranium mononitride has been identified as an alternative fuel with higher uranium density and thermal conductivity when compared to UO2. In NPIC ATF campaign, FeCrAl is one of the advanced cladding concepts and UN is one of the advanced fuel candidates. NPIC has developed about 4m full-length thin-walled FeCrAl tubes with several varied chemical composition as fuel rod cladding. NPIC also prepared UN fuel pellets by sintering. This paper focuses on in-pile performance analysis of UN fuel rod with FeCrAl cladding, so as to make suggestions for future FeCrAl-UN fuel rod research, preparation and application. This paper uses FUPAC code to make analysis on fuel rod in-pile performance. The simulation uses the most recently known material properties. Some analyses of FeCrAl-UN fuel rod performance at steady state conditions are performed. And the results show that FeCrAl-UN fuel rod has good performance in aspects such as fuel temperature, fission gas release, fuel rod internal pressure, etc. Finally, future research and development work are discussed. Sandwich plates with grid-core structures possess extensive applications, and non-uniform grid plates (NUGPs) show enhanced potential under varied loading modes. The current study embarks on an investigation into NUGPs by adjusting the dimensions of transverse and longitudinal grid walls. This comprehensive analysis explores the dynamic responses of these plates when subjected to impact and blast loads, focusing on deformation patterns, damage, and the underlying processes. The findings are illustrated as follows. 1) NUGPs, specifically those with an optimized configuration of grid walls termed the d2 structure, display improved resistance to blast and impact loads compared to their uniformly distributed grid plate counterparts. Notably, designs featuring a less dense grid in the central area yield a more evenly distributed damage pattern under impact loads and a lesser severity of damage from blast loads. 2) The study also reveals that under impact loads, the sandwich structure showcases distinct behaviors through three stages evident in the load-displacement curves: initial localized indentation, followed by overall deformation, and ending with deformation recovery. 3) Moreover, when facing blast loads, the initial response involves rapid plastic deformation of the upper skin, succeeded by compression and buckling of the core. This sequence effectively dissipates energy, acting as a protective shield for the lower skin. 4) The optimized NUGPs design achieves a perfect balance between stiffness and ductility, reducing displacement through adequate stiffness while ensuring the effective absorption of dynamic forces through significant ductility, thus preventing catastrophic failure. This research significantly advances topology optimization for sandwich plates, providing essential insights for designing lightweight structures resilient under various modes. © 2024, CC BY.

In this work,neodymium(Nd)and samarium(Sm)codoped lead lanthanum zirconate titanate(PLZT)ceramics were prepared by a high-temperature solid-state *** samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and ferroelectric *** earth-doped PLZT ceramics show good phase *** appropriate rare earth element doping amount increases the densities of PLZT ceramics and reduces their resistivities,which is due to the role of rare earth elements in grain ***,the increase in the amount of grain boundaries caused by grain refinement also affects domain ***,with increasing doping concentration,the remnant polarization of PLZT gradually decreases,and the doping of rare earth elements also slightly reduces the band gap of *** irradiation with an X-ray simulated beta source with a particle energy of 10 keV(between the average energies of the beta particles of^3H and^(63)Ni),the ceramic sheets in this work produce current densities of up to 1.38 nA/cm^*** indicates that Nd and Sm codoped PLZT ceramics have a certain potential for application in betavoltaic batteries.
