Automated vehicles hold great potential to revolutionize transportation, but subjective user acceptance remains a major obstacle to their widespread adoption and the realization of anticipated safety benefits. Recognizing this challenge, this study explores the role of gamification in enhancing user acceptance of automated vehicles and promoting safer driver engagement. By designing a gamified interaction framework and implementing it in a driving simulator experiment, the research addresses three core questions: Does gamification work? Why does it work? How can it be effectively implemented? In the experiment, participants experienced automated driving scenarios with integrated gamified interactions during overtaking tasks. Data on users' attitudes, behaviors, and eye movements were collected and analyzed through qualitative and quantitative methods. Furthermore, the study incorporated design research techniques, including interviews and user journey mapping, into the scientific framework to derive meaningful and actionable insights. The results reveal that gamification significantly improves user acceptance by enhancing Perceived Ease of Use and strengthening Behavioral Intentions. At a deeper mechanistic level, gamification enhances users' situational awareness and trust by increasing their perception efficiency during interactions and raising their risk tolerance, thereby shifting the balance between safety and reward. Based on these mechanisms and further findings, the study proposes three design strategies to maximize the benefits of gamification: designing system transparency, tailoring experiences to individual user characteristics, and leveraging incentive mechanisms to engage and motivate users effectively. This study's findings provide theoretical foundations and practical design directions for leveraging gamification to enhance human-vehicle interactions, utimately contributing to the development of safer and more efficient automated driving systems. © 2

Three-dimensional (3D) beamforming is a potential technique to enhance communication security of new generation networks such as 5G and beyond. However, it is difficult to achieve optimal beamforming due to the challenges of nonconvex optimization problem and imperfect channel state information (CSI). To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a novel deep learning-based 3D beamforming scheme, where a deep neural network (DNN) is trained to optimize the beamforming design for wireless signals in order to guard against eavesdropper under the imperfect CSI. With our approach, the system is capable of training the DNN model offline, and the trained model can then be adopted to instantaneously select the 3D secure beamforming matrix for achieving the maximum secrecy rate of the system, which is measured by the signal received by eavesdroppers outside the path of the beam. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed solution outperforms the classical deep learning algorithm and 2D beamforming solution in terms of the secrecy rate and robust performance. © 2021 IEEE.

The laser-based power-bed fusion (LB-PBF) additive manufacturing (AM) has become a forefront of AM technologies to produce 316L stainless steels with superior mechanical and corrosion properties compared to conventional methods. However, there is a lack of understanding of the effective manufacturing window which can introduce optimum energy consumption, characteristic microstructure, and properties. As such, this study aims to identify the role of different LB-PBF process parameters (i.e., laser power, scan speed, hatch space, and laser-pattern angle) and different post-heat treatment procedures to obtain enhanced mechanical properties in of 316L stainless steel with limited optimal energy usage. To this end, Taguchi’s design of the experiment (DoE) was elaborated to define the ideal LB-PBF process and heat treatment parameters. Based on the DoE and experimental results, the LB-PBF energy density between 6.7 J/mm3 to 14.7 J/mm3 produced parts with a volumetric mass density of 98.8% or higher. The parts manufactured with laser power of 175 W and heat treated at 870 °C for 2 hours were shown to present the highest tensile strength of ~970 MPa and elongation up to ~40%. The microstructure results show that the change in the process parameters leads to grain size, texture and boundary characteristics variations. The heat treatment at 650, 870, and 1150 °C results in grain reorientation from to components and preferential grain growth up to ~45 μm. It was found that dislocation and grain boundary strengthening played a significant role in enhancing the mechanical properties of the as-built material. While the growth of grains during the heat treatment procedure increased mechanical twinning propensity and dynamic Hall-Petch effect, further improving the strength and ductility of the material. © 2023, The Authors. The investigation of condensation-induced water hammer (CIWH) under ocean conditions is crucial to the system safety of the offshore floating nuclear plants (OFNPs). This paper establishes a CIWH numerical model under rolling conditions based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code combined with user-defined functions (UDF). First, the numerical model is verified by published experimental data. Then, the transient behaviors of CIWH events under various rolling parameters are numerically investigated. The results show that the rolling motion causes a significant steam slug and enhances the steam-subcooled water contact area, which promotes the average condensation rate. The average condensation rate increases with an increase in rolling angle, decreases with an increase in rolling period. Due to the larger average condensation rate and reverse flow caused by rolling motion, the pressure peak generated by the CIWH significantly increases compared to static conditions. Similarly, the pressure peak increases as rolling angle increases, decreases as rolling period increase. Moreover, the pressure peak is proportional to steam inlet velocity, and the location of the pressure peak gradually moves back to the outlet direction as the steam velocity increases. These qualitative conclusions are useful to understand the effects of rolling motion on the CIWH and provide a reference for the CIWH simulations. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes an approach that combines reduced-order models with machine learning in order to create an digital twin to predict the power distribution over the core during the operation stage. The operational digital twin is designed to solve forward problems given input operation parameters, as well as to solve inverse problems given some observations of the power field. The forward model is realised using SVD autoencoder reduced order model and machine learning methods. The inverse model is based on a generalised latent assimilation method. The effectiveness in the sense of accuracy and real-time solver of the digital twin is illustrated through a real engineering problem in nuclear reactor physics - reactor core simulation in the life cycle of HPR1000 affected by control rod inserting step, burnup, power level and inlet temperature of the coolant, which shows potential applications for on-line monitoring purpose. © 2022, The Authors. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) disrupts nerve communication, potentially leading to permanent damage. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are commonly recommended to accelerate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis for MS. Traditional CNN-based methods often face challenges with feature selection, imbalanced classification, and hyperparameter optimization, which can reduce their effectiveness. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a reinforcement learning (RL) strategy for tackling feature selection and class imbalance, complemented by an advanced Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm for hyperparameter tuning. The RL algorithm dynamically adapts, enhancing feature selection and class balance, and consistently outperforms traditional static methods by continually optimizing its response to the complex patterns in MS detection. Furthermore, the DE is enhanced with a novel mutation mechanism that utilizes k-means clustering to identify significant clusters. Tested on the SNAC-MS and ISBI datasets, our model demonstrates robust accuracy with average F-measures of 92.873% and 93.783%, respectively, highlighting its effectiveness and adaptability in diagnosing MS.

Integrated sensing and communications is regarded as a key enabling technology in the sixth generation networks, where a unified waveform, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal, is adopted to facilitate both sensing and communications (S&C). However, the random communication data embedded in the OFDM signal results in severe variability in the sidelobes of its ambiguity function (AF), which leads to missed detection of weak targets and false detection of ghost targets, thereby impairing the sensing performance. Therefore, balancing between preserving communication capability (i.e., the randomness) while improving sensing performance remains a challenging task. To cope with this issue, we characterize the random AF of OFDM communication signals, and demonstrate that the AF variance is determined by the fourth-moment of the constellation amplitudes. Subsequently, we propose an optimal probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) approach by maximizing the achievable information rate (AIR) under the fourth-moment, power and probability constraints, where the optimal input distribution may be numerically specified through a modified Blahut-Arimoto algorithm. To reduce the computational overheads, we further propose a heuristic PCS approach by actively controlling the value of the fourth-moment, without involving the communication metric in the optimization model, despite that the AIR is passively scaled with the variation of the input distribution. Numerical results show that both approaches strike a scalable performance tradeoff between S&C, where the superiority of the PCS-enabled constellations over conventional uniform constellations is also verified. Notably, the heuristic approach achieves very close performance to the optimal counterpart, at a much lower computational complexity. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Due to a small gap between the anti-vibration bars (AVBs) and the heat transfer tubes, and according to the position of AVBs and the number of continuous failures of the in-plane support, the in-plane restraint failure analysis of AVB is divided into 13 cases. The influence of the restraint failure on the in-plane mode of the heat transfer tube under different cases is analysed. The mode damping ratio was calculated by performing a weighted average method based on the mode shape function, and then the effects of different restraints by AVBs on fluid-elastic instability of steam generator tubes are studied. The analysis results show that with the increase of the continuous failure position of the in-plane support, the first-order modal frequency in the elbow zone decreases continuously, and the mode shape appearing in the elbow zone becomes more obvious. The first-order mode in the elbow zone is not necessarily the mode in which the largest fluidelastic instability ratio occurs. The vibration mode with the largest ratio of the fluid-elastic instability appears almost in the elbow zone. With the increase of the continuous failure position of the in-plane support, the fluid-elastic instability ratio increases continuously.
