Python package for causal discovery based on LiNGAM

Causal discovery is a methodology for learning causal graphs from data, and LiNGAM is a well-known model for causal discovery. This paper describes an open-source Python package for causal discovery based on LiNGAM. The package implements various LiNGAM methods under different settings like time series cases, multiple-group cases, mixed data cases, and hidden common cause cases, in addition to evaluation of statistical reliability and model assumptions. During reactor power monitoring, compensated ion-chambers (CICs) are assembled by two similar gas-filled detectors. The gamma compensation of CICs is essential for detecting precision of thermal neutrons, and requires a pairs of fully matched voltages. Descriptions of detecting precision include current formation model, in which applied voltages and radiation strength act in the process of collecting charged particles. However, the model of CICs are seldom applied in design work to evaluate the monitoring precision. Here we show that imbalance degree of collecting charged particles leads to mismatch of saturation currents depending on difference of recombination and diffusion in each sub-chambers. We analyzed a coaxial type compensated ion-chamber (DL-126), and found that applied voltages and radiation strength have significant impact for ion recombination and electron diffusion. For increasing precision of CICs, this result suggests a dynamic way to evaluate the output deviation using radiation strength. Furthermore, we found the compensation factor of two sub-chambers is only related to the applied voltages and remain unchanged in various radiation. Our results demonstrate how collecting regulars of charged particles are likely to function in setting applied voltages, calculating the charge loss as well as quantifying the saturation currents. We anticipate our analysis to be a starting point for revising detection precision of compensated ion-chambers. For example, evaluating the neutron fluence in the reactor shutdown and restart process, including monitoring task after accident. Furthermore, dynamic precision evaluation of these detectors is a major target of prognostics and health management for Nuclear Instrument. Copyright © 2022 by ASME.

A severe accident in a marine nuclear reactor leads to radionuclide leakage,which causes hidden dangers to workers and has adverse effects of environmental *** is necessary to propose a novel approach to radionuclide diffusion in a confined environment after a severe accident in a marine nuclear ***,this study proposes a new method for the severe accident analysis program MELCOR coupled with computational fluid dynamics scSTREAM to study radioactive diffusion in severe *** radionuclide release fraction and temperature calculated by MELCOR were combined with the scSTREAM calculations to study the radionuclide diffusion behavior and the phenomenon of radionuclide diffusion in different space environments of the reactor under the conditions of varying wind velocities of the ventilation system and diffusion *** results show that the wind velocity of the ventilation system is very small or zero,and the turbulent diffusion of radionuclides is not obvious and diffuses slowly in the form of condensation sedimentation and gravity *** the wind speed of the ventilation system increases,the flow of radionuclides meets the wall and forms eddy currents,affecting the time variation of radionuclides diffusing into chamber *** wind velocity of the ventilation system and the diffusion speed has opposite effects on the time variation trend of radionuclide diffusion into the four chambers.

E-textiles for emotion interaction: a scoping review of trends and opportunities

There has been a proliferation of emotion-related interactive textiles in recent years. This research conducted a comprehensive scoping review of the literature on emotion-related interactive textiles design. In total, 75 design studies were identified from their abstracts and analyzed with social network analysis and text mining methods. These studies were categorized into different aims (emotion expression, emotion communication, emotion reflection, emotion regulation, emotional effect, emotional experience, and emotion analysis). This review also analyzed details of prototypes and experimental design, such as textile form, textile function, feedback mechanism, experiment method, evaluation scale, and empirical findings. Then we evaluated these studies based on the relationship of their research aim, textiles, emotion, interaction mechanism, etc. The findings suggest that interactive textiles can aid in emotion presentation, modulation, and creating unique emotional experiences. Interactive textiles, feedback mechanisms, and bodily interaction all serve essential functions and benefit emotional interaction. Last, this review reflected on the critical research directions of emotion-related interactive textiles, including connecting interactive textiles with biofeedback, designing interactive textiles with sensory feedback mechanisms, and increasing bodily interaction for dynamic emotion. Further, this research provided insights into the research gaps, from elaborating on the experiment and exploring the materiality of interactive textiles to concerning privacy and user acceptance. Interactive textiles bridge textiles and emotion together to aid emotional well-being in people’s daily lives. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in using big data for machine learning applications. However, as data are often distributed across multiple clients, privacy and physical limitations can make it difficult to aggregate and use these data on centralized servers. Federated learning and split neural networks enable machine learning models to be built without requiring the aggregation of distributed data. These methods have received increased attention in the industrial sector as a means of eliminating impediments to privacy preservation in data sharing across various institutions, such as smart factories. One critical aspect of implementing such methods in practice is analyzing the time variation of traffic and estimating the throughput required for operationalizing machine learning. Previous studies have formulated traffic characteristics without considering packet overhead and measured only the total traffic and the throughput per iteration;such an approach is inadequate from a traffic monitoring perspective. To address these issues, this study conducted an empirical investigation of traffic patterns under realistic conditions, with a particular focus on quantifying traffic and latency. The results of this study suggest that due to the dynamic nature of throughput, it is essential to measure traffic using time units that can accommodate the temporal variability of traffic. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for accurate measurement of the spatial dispersion of air temperature in air conditioning control for indoor environments. This spatial dispersion of temperature is caused by the unevenness of air conditioning equipment, local temperature gradients due to human activities, and local heat exchange with outdoor air, all of which hinder the provision of a comfortable environment. This issue requires resolution in various fields, including the agricultural sector, where it can negatively impact crop growth. To address this issue, it is necessary to measure air temperature at multiple points, although the number of sensors that can be installed is typically limited, and the temperature at a single point is typically used as a representation of the temperature in the space. Additionally, heat maps using infrared array sensors can acquire temperature distribution in a narrow area;however, they cannot directly determine air temperature as they only measure the surface temperature of an object. Therefore, we propose a deep learning-based method that utilizes both heat maps acquired from infrared array sensors and air temperature data obtained from environmental sensors to estimate air temperature. We evaluate its effectiveness by varying the experimental environment, the model structure, and the resolution and number of heat maps added as input. Furthermore, we assess the usefulness of utilizing a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), which is a cost-effective solution that can be installed on low-resolution sensors and edge devices. The outcomes indicate that the proposed model can attain an estimation accuracy of under 1 mean squared error (MSE) in approximately 200 seconds, while also exhibiting practical feasibility for deployment on edge devices, including residential abodes and agricultural premises. © 2023 IEEE.

CFD simulation of thermal hydraulic characteristics in a typical upper plenum of RPV

A comparative computational fluid dynamics(CFD)study was conducted on the three different types of pressurized water reactor(PWR)upper plenum,named TYPE 1(support columns(SCs)and control rod guide tubes(CRGTs)with two large windows),TYPE 2(SCs and CRGTs without windows),and TYPE 3(two parallel perforated barrel shells and CRGTs).First,three types of upper plenum geometry information were collected,simplified,and adopted into the BORA facility,which is a 1/5 scale system of the four-loop PWR ***,the geometry,including the upper half core,upper plenum region,and hot legs,was built using the Salome *** that,an unsteady calculation to simulate the reactor balance operation at hot full power scenario was ***,the differences of flowrate distribution at the core outlet and temperature distribution and transverse velocity inside the hot legs with different upper plenum internals were *** results suggest that TYPE 1 upper plenum internals cause the largest flowrate difference at the core outlet while TYPE 3 leads to the most even distributed *** distribution and evolution pattern of the tangential velocity inside hot legs is highly dependent on the upper plenum *** counter-rotating swirls exist inside the TYPE 1 hot leg and only one swirl revolving around the hog leg axis exist inside the TYPE 2 hot *** TYPE 3,two swirls like that of TYPE 1 rotating around the hot leg axis significantly increase the temperature homogenization *** research provides meaningful guidelines for the future optimization and design of advanced PWR upper plenum internal structures.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a transformational digital manufacturing technology featured with rapidity, customizability, precision, and economy, which is fundamentally altering the way components are designed and manufactured. AM enables the freedom of design, and makes full use of complexity of geometry which comes for free . Applying AM technology to nuclear industry can yield advanced reactor designs with function and structure matched for the best thermal, hydraulic and mechanical performance. In this work, an AM-informed reactor core design with silicon carbide (SiC) matrix and tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) particle fuel is proposed and analyzed. The core is an integrated 3D-printing SiC bulk with helical cruciform coolant channels, and the UO2-bearing TRISO fuel particles are dispersed in the bulk. A multi-physics analysis framework for irregular geometry is developed to analyze and further optimize the reactor design. The TRISO particle positions are generated with discrete element method (DEM). The reactor Monte Carlo code (RMC) and the commercial CFD software STAR-CCM+ are used for the neutronic and thermal-hydraulic analyses, respectively. RMC simulates the neutron transport to predict the effective multiplication factor and power distribution. STAR-CCM+ calculates the flow and heat transfer in coolant channels and heat conduction in solid matrix with the power distribution as the heat source. Preliminary results show that the power peaking factor FQ decreases below 1.65, the heat transfer area increases by 30.3% and the fuel peaking temperature decreases by 25 K. The optimized AM-informed design enjoys better neutronic and thermal-hydraulic performance than those with regular geometry. © 2022 by ASME.

TRISO coated fuel particle has been adopted in the design of various reactors and Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) due to its excellent accident tolerant performance under high temperatures and other severe conditions. Accurately estimating fission product release from TRISO-coated fuel particles is indispensable to calculate the mechanistic source term. In most models, a bare kernel is substituted conservatively for failed particle. Thus, a theoretical method was proposed to describe the transport of fission products in intact and failed fuel particles. In this paper, to analyze the diffusion and release characteristics of intact TRISO-coated fuel particles' fission products, the fission products diffusion model of TRISO-coated fuel particles with thermal-mechanical coupling was established based on the COMSOL Multiphysics software and verified by the IAEA CRP-6 benchmark. The results indicate that the predictions by the developed fission product transport model is reasonable. Moreover, to analyze fission product release for failed partials, a conceptual theoretical method was proposed. The adsorption and desorption constraint model for fission products at the gas-solid interface and the gas phase diffusion model were added to the original model to analyze. Subsequently, predictions comparison for fission products' fractional release in failed particles between the proposed method and the Settings adopted in BISON were completed. The result suggests that the gas-phase diffusion model is feasible and seems favorable to simulate the diffusion of fission products in the failed coating layers. © 2023 by JSME.

This paper presents a unified framework of stabilized finite element method for solving the Boltzmann transport equation. Unlike the traditional Petrov-Galerkin finite element method which modify the test function to construct the stabilization term, we derive the stabilization methods from the standard Galerkin weak form with Sub-grid scale model. The basic idea of this method is to decompose the unknowns into its numerical solution and residual, with an approximation for the residual and embed it in the Galerkin weak form yields a stabilized variational formula. Different approximations of the residual lead to different stabilization methods, all the frequently used stabilized methods, including the Streamline Upwinding Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method, Galerkin/Least-Square (GLS) method, and Algebraic Sub-Grid Scale (ASGS) method can be obtained from this framework. The similarities and differences of the different approximations are compared in this paper. The numerical results show that the behaviors of the different methods are similar with the same stabilization parameter, and all these stabilized techniques can obtain correct and stable solution. © 2022 Proceedings of the International Conference on Physics of reactors, PHYSOR 2022.
