The ground insulation is a key component for large electrical machine, which may present the crack defect after the process treatment and assembly of manufacturing. In this paper, the crack propagations of the ground insulation failure with initial crack in stator end-winding of the large motor were studied by using the coupled phase field model. In the proposed model, the coupled effects of mechanical and electrical fields on the crack propagation and the evolutions were considered by using phase field method and finite element analysis. The results in this paper may provide a new way for the research of multi-factor damage diagnosis and life prediction of motor insulation coupling.

The heat pipe cooled reactor is a solid-state reactor using heat pipes to passively transfer heat generated from the reactor, which is a potential and near-term space nuclear power system. This paper introduces the coupling scheme between the continuous energy reactor Monte Carlo (RMC) code and the finite element method commercial software ANSYS. Monte Carlo method has the advantages of flexible geometry modeling and continuous-energy nuclear cross sections. ANSYS Parametric design Language (APDL) is used to determine the detailed temperature distributions and geometric deformation. The on-the-fly temperature treatment of cross sections was adopted in RMC code to solve the memory problems and to speed up simulations. This paper proposed a geometric updating strategy and reactivity feedback methods for the geometric deformation of the solid-state core. The neutronic and thermal-mechanical coupling platform is developed to analyze and further to optimize the heat pipe cooled reactor design. The present coupling codes analyze a 2D central cross-section model for MEGAPOWER heat pipe cooled reactor. The thermal-mechanical feedback reveals that the solid-state reactor has a negative reactivity feedback (~1.5 pcm/K) while it has a deterioration in heat transfer due to the expansion. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences. In this paper, we consider the distributed time-varying optimization problem with coupled equality constraints over a connected undirected network. To address this issue, we design a novel distributed constraint optimization algorithm, and establish its ISS stability with external disturbances and tracking errors as the input and state, respectively. Moreover, the obtained result includes distributed constrained optimization with static objective functions as a special case. In comparison to existing relevant works, the proposed algorithm demonstrates exponential convergence for cases involving static objective functions. Finally, the theoretical results are validated via a numerical example.

In the current work, the correlation between microstructural features and fatigue crack growth (FCG) behaviors in Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy is investigated by a combination of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), electron channeling contrast (ECC) and mechanical tests. Three kinds of specimens with different microstructures are prepared by water quenching (WQ), air cooling (AC) and furnace cooling (FC) after isothermal holding for 1h in α+β phase region of the as-received material. The da/dN-ΔK curves indicate that the FCG resistance ability of AC specimen is the worst, resulting in the highest FCG rate. The corresponding FCG paths of these specimens are also examined systematically. And the results show that the crack bifurcation and deflection in both WQ and FC specimens are more serious than that in AC specimen. For the specimen with WQ microstructure, boundaries with high angle misorientation angles between different α variants transformed from β phase may act as an obstacle to hinder the dislocation movement and slip transfer, favoring the secondary crack initiation. Similarly, the strain incompatibility generated at the boundaries between different α phases in FC specimen may also promote the occurrence of crack bifurcation. In contrast, in AC specimen, α colonies that contains α variants with the same crystal orientation are more likely to be formed inside β transformation grains leading to few secondary cracks formed. Furthermore, a modified mathematical model is developed to evaluate the co-effect of the crack deflection and bifurcation on the FCG rate. It is suggested that the crack bifurcation is the main factor that can effectively reduce the stress intensity factor of the main crack tip, and in turn slow down the FCG rate. © 2022, The Authors. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed soft-switching active bridge converter in dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) systems. In experiments, it was confirmed that the prototype converter operated with soft switching during DWPT. In addition, the efficiency of the proposed system was enhanced by 2.3 percentage points on average compared to a system using a conventional converter. Furthermore, the proposed system reduced radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) by 5.8 dBμV on average.

Benchmarking provides experimental evidence of the scientific baseline to enhance the progression of fundamental research, which is also applicable to robotics. In this paper, we propose a method to benchmark metrics of robotic manipulation, which addresses the spatial-temporal reasoning skills for robot learning with the jigsaw game. In particular, our approach exploits a simple set of jigsaw pieces by designing a structured protocol, which can be highly customizable according to a wide range of task specifications. Researchers can selectively adopt the proposed protocol to benchmark their research outputs, on a comparable scale in the functional, task, and system-level of details. The purpose is to provide a potential look-up table for learning-based robot manipulation, commonly available in other engineering disciplines, to facilitate the adoption of robotics through calculated, empirical, and systematic experimental evidence. © 2023, CC BY.

Flow Around Porous Square Cylinders with a Periodic and Scalable Structure

This study experimentally explores the effect of permeability as an isolated control parameter on the downstream wake structure and the aerodynamic properties of the porous square cylinder. An addictive manufacturing technique was utilized to fabricate the porous cylinder, comprised of a simple cubic lattice structure. This unique manufacturing technique, coupled with a periodic and scalable lattice structure, allows us to decouple the permeability from the porosity. Based on permeability measurements in this study, Darcy number ($Da$) of the porous cylinder varies in a range of $2.44\times10^{-5}-4.07\times10^{-4}$, while its porosity ($\Phi$) is fixed at 0.7. Interesting features in the downstream wake are observed due to the mutual interaction between longitudinal and lateral bleeding flows. This mutual interplay prevents wake entrainment, relocating a recirculation bubble downstream and making its size smaller with increasing $Da$. When $Da>2.0\times 10^{-4}$, in particular, a steady wake is observed in the near-wake despite the low degree of porosity. Finally, we proposed a new approach to defining the length scale of the flow adjustment that is suitable for the porous square cylinder and comparable to the porous cylinder with a circular cross-section. © 2022, The Authors. Reusing shipping containers for residential purposes offers a promising approach to address global energy consumption challenges from economic and environmental perspectives. This study parametrically designed hybrid louver shadings by combining fixed vertical triangular slats with variable-depth horizontal rectangular slats, offering a novel approach to shading prefabricated buildings. The energy consumption, daylighting performance, and visual comfort were assessed for various shading configurations. Results indicated that implementing the proposed hybrid louvers, featuring fixed vertical triangular slats and variable-depth horizontal rectangular slats, significantly reduced Energy Use Intensity (EUI) to 133.95 kWh/m2. Moreover, Useful daylight illuminance (UDI), Daylight Autonomy (DA), and Glare Autonomy (GA) values improved to 95.38%, 89.97%, and 91.16%, respectively. The study highlighted the potential of the proposed shading system to significantly reduce overall energy consumption across various ASHRAE climate zones, including Miami (1A), Guangzhou (2A), Melbourne (3C), Esperance (3C), San Diego (3A), and Milan (4A). Notably, energy reductions of up to 50.2% were projected for climates such as Miami (1A) and San Diego (3A). Furthermore, container buildings in warm climate zones exhibited a significantly lower EUI range of 76.58 to 91.95 kWh/m². This study underscores the transformative potential of hybrid louver systems in promoting the widespread adoption of sustainable residential architecture, contributing to global sustainability efforts. © 2024 Southwest Jiatong University

Temperature governs the reactivity of a wide range of biomolecules in the cellular environment dynamically. The complex cellular pathways and molecules in solid tumors substantially produce temperature gradients in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Hence, visualization of these temperature gradients at the cellular level would give physiologically relevant spatio-temporal information about solid tumors. This study used fluorescent polymeric nano-thermometers (FPNTs) to measure the intratumor temperature in co-cultured 3D tumor spheroids. A temperature-sensitive rhodamine-B dye and Pluronic F-127 were conjugated through hydrophobic and hydrophobic interactions and then cross-linked with urea-paraformaldehyde resins to form the FPNTs. The characterization results exhibit monodisperse nanoparticles (166 ± 10 nm) with persistent fluorescence. The FPNTs exhibit a linear response with a wide temperature sensing range (25-100 °C) and are stable toward pH, ionic strength, and oxidative stress. FPNTs were utilized to monitor the temperature gradient in co-cultured 3D tumor spheroids and the temperature difference between the core (34.9 °C) and the periphery (37.8 °C) was 2.9 °C. This investigation demonstrates that the FPNTs have great stability, biocompatibility, and high intensity in a biological medium. The usage of FPNTs as a multifunctional adjuvant may demonstrate the dynamics of the TME and they may be suitable candidates to examine thermoregulation in tumor spheroids. © 2023 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
