Experimental and numerical investigation on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of lead-bismuth eutectic through a helical single rod and four-rod bundle

The flow and heat transfer performance of nuclear fuel are critical factors influencing the safety and economic efficiency of nuclear reactor systems. This study investigates a novel helical fuel design for lead-bismuth eutectic-cooled reactors. Experiments are performed in three different test sections to evaluate flow resistance, convective heat transfer, transverse mixing, and flow distribution. Key experimental parameters, including temperature, pressure drop, and volumetric flow rate, are measured. The results demonstrate that, at a constant Reynolds number ( Re ) and constant Péclet number ( Pe ), the inlet temperature has negligible influence on both the resistance coefficient and Nusselt number ( Nu ). The flow resistance correlation is found to be consistent across fuel rods similar to helical cruciform geometry. Besides, transverse mixing experiments in the four-rod test section demonstrate that transverse mixing efficiency across subchannels is influenced by experimental parameters. Moreover, flow distribution results indicate that the flow distribution ratio (average = 1.89) between inside and outside channels remains independent of Re in turbulent regions. These experiments provide a comprehensive dataset for validating numerical models. Based on these data, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are performed. The predictions using the Realizable two-layer k − ε turbulence model show excellent agreement with experimental data.

A novel easy-to-splice mechanical coupler (EtSMC) involving a sleeve, two caps, two racks, two rack guides, and two springs is introduced;this coupler easily and tightly connects two rebars through a simple manual operation (without any tool) on a construction site. The mechanical performance (including the pull force/stroke curve of the EtSMC assembly) is experimentally examined via tensile testing in air. A finite element analysis (FEA) model that minimizes simplification of the conceptual design is presented;the spring reaction is assumed to be mechanically symmetrical. The experimental tensile test is numerically analyzed using a fully implicit elastoplastic FEA function and a multi-body treatment scheme based on the tetrahedral MINI-element technique. The predictions are in qualitatively good agreement with the experimental data in terms of both the pull force/stroke curve and the damaged regions of the racks and rack guides. Small differences between the curves can be attributed to some experimental slip between parts. Copyright © 2025 Techno-Press, Ltd.

The acoustic induced vibration of dryer (also called secondary separator) in steam generator in nuclear power plants is a concern in recent years. Periodic vibrations of long-term operation can lead to fatigue damage of structural components, posing a safety hazard. In this paper, the finite element analysis model of the dryer structure in steam generator of "Hualong-1" nuclear power plant was established, and the acoustic induced vibration characteristics of the structure were studied. Firstly, the acoustic excitation of the dryer structure was discussed, and the excitation inputs were obtained, including the maximum static pressure and the maximum pressure power spectrum density. Then the finite element model was established by ANSYS and the weak parts of the dryer structure were determined by the vibration characteristics combined with the acoustic excitation characteristics analysis. Finally, the structural strength and fatigue characteristics of the dryer structure under two different inputs of the acoustic load were investigated. The analysis of vibration characteristics shows that the main weak parts of the dryer structure are the vertical partition plate and the perforated plate. The static pressure analysis shows that the stress intensity of the two weak plates is less than the limit. In the study of pressure power spectral density, the maximum dynamic stress intensity and alternating stress of the vertical partition plate and the perforated plate are also less than the limit. In the manufacturing process of a specific type of conical cylinder, high-frequency argon arc welding is employed for butt welding. The uncertainty of the butt weld position relative to the welding gun results in excessive manual labor during production, leading to suboptimal product qualification rates;Consequently, the implementation of a fusion laser welding seam tracking automated control system was initiated. This system utilizes a PLC to gather various sensor data signals, control servomotors, valves, and motors, thereby establishing a comprehensive automated butt welding tracking control system. Ultimately, this achieves the goals of reducing labor costs, diminishing labor intensity, and enhancing both production efficiency and product quality. © 2024 SPIE.

With liquid metal like lead-bismuth alloy(LBE) acting as a coolant for nuclear reactors, it is necessary to use a more accurate heat transfer relationship and a more reliable Prt model for the low Pr fluid. Because of the low Pr of liquid metal, the thermal conductivity is more dominant than the momentum transfer, which is quite different from ordinary fluids. In this case, the turbulent Prt can better reflect the heat transfer process. In this study, the Prt=A1+A2/Pr form is selected, and the corresponding coefficients are obtained by the renormalization group analysis method, then corrected by Pr. Furthermore, the applicable range and segmentation rule of the turbulent Prt model are discussed, and the obtained Prt segmentation theoretical model is written into CFD. The result shows that, compared with the previously unmodified model, the radial temperature distribution and Nusselt number (Nu) of the annular and bundle channel obtained by RANS method with the improved Prt model is in good agreement with experimental r esults, and the deviations are within 5%. It is proved that the turbulent Prt segmentation theoretical model proposed in this study is effective and can represent the heat transfer characteristics of liquid metal from the mechanism. © 2019 American Nuclear Society. The MAAP5 code and CFD method are adopted to estimate the melting behavior of core peripheral components for an Advanced China PWR, called ACP1000 after a large break accident to determine the amount of stainless steel relocating into the corium pool. The results suggest that larger portion of peripheral components melting in CFD method because of considering the radiation of fuel rods on shroud and barrel before core melting and ignoring the cooling of steam on the components in core. Effects of different configurations of corium pool on heat flux imposed on the vessel wall are also investigated in this work. The heat flux in light metal layer for the corium pool that obtained by MAAP5 code could be higher than that of CFD case due to its thinner light metal layer. Copyright © 2018-2019 by JSME

Analog circuit design automation remains an intense area of attention and has seen both new and existing tools continued to be developed targeting different phases of the analog design flow to reduce development time and cost. One of the promising tools is the Berkeley analog generator (BAG2) framework which is an open-source analog layout generator for automating and verifying circuit layouts. It promises a process-independent flow as well as encourages design re-use due to using parameterized generators which can be scaled as required and this reduces the layout-development time compared to manual hand-made layouts. This work describes the effort and results of evaluating the BAG2 framework for the TSMC 65nm and Cadence GPDK 45nm processes. A case study is made with a number of circuits to discuss the problems in setting up and using BAG2 for the above technologies as well as the limitations and solutions required to utilize the framework effectively.

In this paper, hierarchical micro/nano structures composed of periodic microstructures, LIPSS, and nanoparticles were fabricated by femtosecond laser processing. A layer of hydrophobic species was formed on the micro/nano structures through perfluorosilane modification. The reflectivity and hydrophobicity’s influence mechanisms of structural height, duty cycle, and size are experimentally elucidated. The average reflectivity of the silicon surface in the visible light band is reduced to 3.0% under the optimal parameters, and the surface exhibits a large contact angle of 172.3 ± 0.8 ° and a low sliding angle of 4.2 ± 1.4 °. Finally, the durability of anti-reflection and superhydrophobicity is also confirmed. This study deepens the understanding of the principles of anti-reflection and superhydrophobicity and expands the design and preparation methods for self-cleaning and anti-reflective surfaces. © 2024, The Authors. Poor interfacial adhesion of composites deriving from the surface smoothness and inertness of poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers severely constrains the extensive application of the fillers. Constructing the functional coating is generally considered a non-destructive and scalable strategy to simultaneously improve the asperity and activity of PBO fiber surfaces. Herein, we report a facile method to boost the interfacial adhesion in PBO fiber/epoxy composite by employing finely granular-structured polyaniline (PANI) as an interfacial intensifier. Via a mild and efficient in situ polymerization technique, the positively charged micron-scale PANI particles are uniformly anchored onto the negatively charged PBO fibers to form delicate leathery surface layer containing substantial amino groups. Meanwhile, the resulting PBO fibers maintain the intrinsic mechanical properties. Therefore, the PANI-coated PBO fiber/epoxy composite (PBO@PANI/EP) shows the significant increase in interfacial shear strength (41.0 MPa) and interlaminar shear strength (44.9 MPa), soaring by 60.16% and 54.83%, respectively. The debonding behavior and fracture surfaces confirm that the interfacial failure mechanism of PBO@PANI/EP converts from adhesive failure to both cohesive and substrate failure. The strategy in this work to modify PBO fiber surfaces for increasing the interfacial combination of composite is cost-effective and feasible to scale up. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
