Compression and thermal conduction performance of bioinspired sandwich structures fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

After millions of years of natural evolution, horsetails have evolved unique stem structures that enable survival in harsh environments. Inspired by the cross-sectional characteristics of horsetail stems, a series of bioinspired sandwich structures were designed and fabricated using the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process. By combining experimental and finite element simulation methods, the formability, mechanical properties, deformation behavior, and thermal conduction performance of these structures were determined. Results show that the surface morphology of the bioinspired sandwich structures was smooth, with no cracks observed. The bioinspired sandwich structure with an inner tube diameter of 1.9 mm (D_1.9) exhibited optimal comprehensive mechanical properties, with a specific strength of 64.2 MPa/(g/cm³), and specific energy absorption of 3.3 J/g. Stress distribution results revealed that the D_1.9 structures had the most uniform stress distribution. Furthermore, increasing the internal conduction paths improved heat transfer;therefore, the thermal conductivities of the D_1.4, D_1.9, and D_2.4 structures were higher than that of the D₀ structure. This study demonstrates that a bioinspired design approach, combined with additive manufacturing technology, enables the development of high-performance structures with both load-bearing and thermally insulating capabilities. © 2025

The method of characteristics (MOC) with matrix form has more favorable performance compared with its standard application. And the linear algebraic solver affects heavily the computation efficiency. As a Krylov subspace technique, the preconditioned generalized minimal residual algorithm (PGMRES) was proposed to solve the resulting linear system in previous work. To accelerate the iteration process further, the current study utilizes the GPU-based compute unified device architecture(CUDA) technique to program the massively parallel PGMRES. The sparse matrix vector multiplication(SpMV), the most time-consuming operation, was optimized using the coherent visiting and shared memory, which improves the parallel computing performance significantly. Based on the analysis of the numerical feature of the coefficient matrix, two parallel optimization strategies are proposed to deal with the first part of the matrix equation, and the different schemes are utilized to the different parts of the matrix based on the size of row vector, which are expected to improve the throughput of the SpMV operation. The benchmark problem HTTR(i.e. 2D high temperature engineering test reactor benchmark problem) has been simulated to verify the parallel code and evaluate the acceleration performance, and the numerical results demonstrate that the parallel strategies are efficient for the HTTR problem, and the speedup can achieve more than 5.5 times with the optimal strategy. © 2018-2019 by JSME

In order to suppress the strong direct wave interference in the bistatic sonar system, this paper proposes a method that combines the weighted sparsity-constrained capon beamformer with the zero constraint. The algorithm uses the sparse distribution of beam response and adds sparse constraints (l1-norm constraints) in the side lobe. By using the orthogonal characteristics of the signal subspace and the noise subspace, a weighted matrix is constructed to weight the sparsity constraint. Subsequently, the optimal weight can be derived by minimizing the output power. In the bistatic sonar system, according to the prior knowledge of the system configuration, the direction of direct wave is often known. Based on the fact, the zero constraint is used to set the beam output response of the array form to be a null in a fixed direction. Under the constraint of null, a least-square method is exploited to approximate a constraint pattern to an ideal pattern in order to solve the optimal weight. Consequently, a deeper and wider null is generated, which improves the anti-steering vector angle mismatch of the array ability. In the case of small deviations in the direction of the interference wave, the receiver can also effectively suppress the interference. © 2021 IEEE.

Federated learning (FL) framework enables user devices collaboratively train a global model based on their local datasets without privacy leak. However, the training performance of FL is degraded when the data distributions of different devices are incongruent. Fueled by this issue, we consider a clustered FL (CFL) method where the devices are divided into several clusters according to their data distributions and are trained simultaneously. Convergence analysis is conducted, which shows that the clustered model performance depends on cosine similarity, device number per cluster, and device participation probability. Then, aiming at optimizing the model training performance, a joint problem of resource allocation and device clustering is formulated, which is solved by decoupling it into two sub-problems. Specifically, a coalition formation algorithm is proposed for the device clustering sub-problem, and the sub-problem of bandwidth allocation and transmit power control is solved directly due to its convexity. Finally, simulation experiments are conducted on the MNIST dataset to validate the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of test accuracy.

While domain adaptation (DA) methods have made significant strides in remote sensing community, most current works assume that the source domain labels are accurate. However, limited emphasis has been placed on the scenario where source data are mislabeled with noisy annotations, which is more common in real applications and referred to as noisy DA (NDA). This article formulates remote sensing cross-scene classification on NDA scenarios and proposes a novel network called bilateral adaptation network (BAN), which consists of two parts: 1) forward learning (FL), which utilizes a model learning from the noisy source domain and transfers knowledge to target domain;and 2) backward learning (BL), which utilizes a dual model to acquire knowledge from the target domain and transfer it to source domain. We conduct two parts alternately and adopt a symmetrical Kullback-Leibler (KL) loss to align predictions of the model and its dual model in the same domain. This interactive strategy is able to explore bilateral relationships between domains, implicitly reducing label noise in the source domain. In addition, BAN could serve as a universal paradigm to not only improve the existing NDA methods but also enhance recent DA approaches. Comprehensive evaluations on three publicly available RGB-band remote sensing datasets and two hyperspectral datasets validate the superior effectiveness of our proposed BAN. BAN improves the average accuracy by 6.70%-15.70% on RGB datasets and overall accuracy (OA) by 1.36%-3.14% on hyperspectral datasets with flip-20% noise compared to other state-of-the-art DA and NDA approaches. Promising results indicate the potential of our approach in tackling more general and practical problems with noisy source domain. © 2025 IEEE.

With the aim of tailoring the texture of Zr alloys by twin recrystallization, the recrystallization mechanism and texture evolution of a tensile-twin-containing Zr702 were investigated in this work. Two types of rolling modes, simple rolling along former normal direction (ND) and cross rolling along former ND and rolling direction (RD) at cryogenic temperature, were conducted in a Zr702 sheet with a basal texture to activate high density tensile twins, and subsequent annealing was applied to induce twin recrystallization. During cryogenic rolling, [[EQUATION]] and [[EQUATION]] tensile twins were activated, which resulted in a texture change of c-axis keeping away from ND and tilting close to transverse direction (TD) along the ND-TD plane. And a [[EQUATION]] twin band- [[EQUATION]] twin band- [[EQUATION]] twin band lamellar structure formed inside the twinned grains at high thickness reductions due to the growth of [[EQUATION]] twins between parallel [[EQUATION]] twins. When rolling direction is RD for cross rolling, the grain orientations were more beneficial to the activation of prismatic slip than tensile twinning, leading to lower area fractions of tensile twins and sluggish texture change in cross-rolled samples. However, the final textures of the two types of rolled samples at 30% thickness reduction were similar. During annealing, twin recrystallization in tensile twins featured by bulging of twin boundaries and conventional discontinuous recrystallization at original grain boundaries occurred in twinned grains. Recrystallized grains formed in tensile twins had orientations closed to the un-recrystallized twins and contributed to the generation of a uniform texture of c-axis tilted close to TD along ND-TD plane in rolled and annealed samples, regardless of the different area fractions of twins and the various rolled textures at different thickness reductions. The heat pipe power system is a potential and near-term space nuclear power system. One of the essential techniques is the high-temperature heat pipe designs with high reliability and heat transfer capacity. In space reactor study, an annular heat pipe, with a liquid annulus between the wick and wall, was proposed to decrease the pressure losses for liquid metal returning and hence, raising the capillary limit of the heat pipes. In this work, a node-based network steady-state and transient model were developed for analyses of these new heat pipes and accuracy improvement in the continuum flow pattern. The model was validated against the experiments and numerical results in the literature. Moreover, the model was applied to calculate the high-temperature heat pipe for space nuclear power system. Preliminary results validate the model for predicting reasonably the thermal-hydraulic features. Copyright © 2018-2019 by JSME

With the rapid development of avionics display field, the traditional graphics software development method can no longer meet the needs of high security and efficiency. This paper studies a development method based on SCADE Display, a high security graphics application development tool, analyses the principle and characteristics of SCADE Display, applies SCADE Display to design airborne display scene models, and tests, analyses and optimizes the process on a home-made test platform. Finally, the experimental results show that the optimized solution can effectively improve the development efficiency and graphics frame rate, and also verify the adaptability and functionality of the home-made platform.

The tension-compression asymmetry and orientation effect of dislocation-twin boundary (TB) interactions in twinned TWIP steels were investigated using the discrete dislocation dynamics simulations and Schmid's law. The different types of dislocations dominate the TB migration in the twinned TWIP steel during tension and compression with the same loading orientation, and the asymmetric dislocation reactions at TB were attributed to the different leading partials produced after the dissociation of dislocation under different loading modes (tension or compression). Moreover, the complex dislocation-TB interactions, such as dislocations traversing TB, cross slip, dissociation, pile up and so on, were determined by considering the orientation effect of dislocation activation and the asymmetry of dislocation dissociation. The research advances the understanding of asymmetric behavior of twin and its influence on the macro hardening in plastic deformation of TWIP steels. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
