reactor physics is the study of neutron properties, focusing on using models to examine the interactions between neutrons and materials in nuclear reactors. Artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant contributions to reactor physics, e.g., in operational simulations, safety design, real-time monitoring, core management and maintenance. This paper presents a comprehensive review of AI approaches in reactor physics, especially considering the category of Machine Learning (ML), with the aim of describing the application scenarios, frontier topics, unsolved challenges and future research directions. From equation solving and state parameter prediction to nuclear industry applications, this paper provides a step-by-step overview of ML methods applied to steady-state, transient and combustion problems. Most literature works achieve industry-demanded models by enhancing the efficiency of deterministic methods or correcting uncertainty methods, which leads to successful applications. However, research on ML methods in reactor physics is somewhat fragmented, and the ability to generalize models needs to be strengthened. Progress is still possible, especially in addressing theoretical challenges and enhancing industrial applications such as building surrogate models and digital twins. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Effect of thermal-hydraulic parameters and pH on the corrosion product deposition in steam generator based on CFD

The deposition of corrosion products in the primary circuit of a pressurized water reactors is known to have an adverse impact on reactor system’s performance, which can cause localized corrosion. They can also impede the flow of coolant, or in severe cases block the tube channels. Besides, the deposits have a lower thermal conductivity than the structural materials, which may increase the thermal resistance, thus reducing heat transfer efficiency. Despite the presence of a considerable amount of corrosion products in steam generators, research on the deposition of corrosion products within is still insufficient. A comprehensive 3-D model of thermal–hydraulic and chemical processes was used to investigate the factors affecting the deposition of corrosion products in a steam generator. For the purpose of determine the deposition distribution along the heat transfer tube, the tube was separated into 11 main nodes based on the equal temperature differences according to the thermal–hydraulic data calculated. The simulation results indicate that the deposition thickness is sensitive to coolant temperature, flow velocity and pH value, and it was shown that higher temperature(from 560 K to 600 K decreasing 9.31 %), pH value (from 6.5 to 8.0 decreasing 9.92 %) and lower flow velocity (from 5 m/s to 20 m/s increasing 8.13 %)was effective for reducing the corrosion product deposition due to the physicochemical properties of the coolant and the turbulent flow, while working pressure has less influence on it(from 6 MPa to 15 MPa increasing only 1.03 %).

Numerical Trajectory Planning of Panel Installation with Optimal Energy Consumption for Redundant Articulating Crane

The automatic installation of panels has become crucial in numerous industries scenarios. This paper proposed a trajectory planning method to addresses the position and posture adjustment of panel installation using redundant articulating cranes. Configuration space of the crane and rotation matrix are combined to investigate the strong coupling of the panel's position and posture. Moreover, the study combines the motion modes of the crane with the sequential analysis of redundant motion to assess energy consumption, incorporating energy efficiency as one of the planning objectives. Simultaneously, an intrinsic connection between the motion sequences within the C-space and safety considerations is analyzed. The installation experiment is performed with a real crane. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves the function of installation of panels, which can make both the panel’s position and posture safely reach the predetermined state with less energy consume. © 2024, The Authors. Thermal-mechanical coupling behavior analysis of solid-state constrained component in advanced nuclear energy system

With the advantage of phase change heat transfer, heat pipes have the potential to replace flowing coolants for removing fission heat from nuclear reactors. However, the solid-state constrained heat transfer configuration poses mutual constraints between mechanical properties and heat transfer, and their long-term thermal-mechanical coupling behavior requires further investigation. Currently, research on long-term behavior is limited to either individual/local system components or a single physical field. In this paper, an analysis method for coupled thermal-mechanical behavior is proposed and verified, comprehensively considering thermal-mechanical properties, interactions between components, and the fission gas release. This method is employed to analyze the operating characteristics of a solid-state constrained component. The results indicate that prolonged operation leads to complete contact between structural components, generating high contact pressure that enhances heat transfer but increases creep. The release of gaseous fission products, accumulated over operating time, results in a synchronous increase in both gap and external contact pressures, reaching 5.2 MPa and 4.8 MPa, respectively. This process reduces the gas gap conductance, leading to elevated system peak temperatures and a reduction in temperature safety margins by 43 K. After heat pipe failure, continued operation significantly increases the local creep strain, up to 3.9 times that under normal conditions. The gap size and fuel gap pressure should be optimized to enhance gap heat transfer and reduce component creep. Excessive fission gas release should be avoided in fuel configuration. Reducing the system power following a single heat pipe failure can mitigate component creep and extend the operational lifespan.

In the field of railway transportation, with the continuous improvement of train running speed and the continuous increase of operating mileage, it becomes particularly important to ensure the safety and integrity of small-target infrastructure along the railway train. Although many small-target detection methods have been proposed, the research on small-target infrastructure detection along rail trains is very rare. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a small-target infrastructure detection network with spatial tracking and multi-level feature extraction based on Yolov8n. The experimental results show that ST-YOLO has a 3.6% mAP improvement on the OSDaR23 dataset compared to the baseline Yolov8n, and shows significant advantages over other state-of-the-art methods.

According to spray cooling characteristics for failure of the cooling system in the spent fuel pool, we establish a model for analyzing spray cooling of a single spent fuel rod and develop a code named SFSC which is used to calculate the thermalhydraulic characteristics of film on the spent fuel rod under the condition of spray cooling. The results obtained from SFSC consist of film thickness, film temperature, film evaporation, fuel pellet temperature of spent fuel rod and cladding temperature of spent fuel rod at different height of spent fuel rod are shown in this paper. At the same time, we establish same model by RELAP and compare results calculated by RELAP with that calculated by SFSC. The good agreement of two results demonstrates that SFSC is effective. SFSC fills in the blanks of thermal-hydraulic calculation for the spent fuel rod under the condition of spray cooling. © 2020 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). All rights reserved.

Optimizing various wireless user tasks poses a significant challenge for networking systems because of the expanding range of user requirements. Despite advancements in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), the need for customized optimization tasks for individual users complicates developing and applying numerous DRL models, leading to substantial computation resource and energy consumption and can lead to inconsistent outcomes. To address this issue, we propose a novel approach utilizing a Mixture of Experts (MoE) framework, augmented with Large Language Models (LLMs), to analyze user objectives and constraints effectively, select specialized DRL experts, and weigh each decision from the participating experts. Specifically, we develop a gate network to oversee the expert models, allowing a collective of experts to tackle a wide array of new tasks. Furthermore, we innovatively substitute the traditional gate network with an LLM, leveraging its advanced reasoning capabilities to manage expert model selection for joint decisions. Our proposed method reduces the need to train new DRL models for each unique optimization problem, decreasing energy consumption and AI model implementation costs. The LLM-enabled MoE approach is validated through a general maze navigation task and a specific network service provider utility maximization task, demonstrating its effectiveness and practical applicability in optimizing complex networking systems. © 2024, CC BY.

In the nuclear power plant, the trunnion welding attachment is widely used to connect the pipe and support. According to ASME Code Cases the stress caused by the welded attachment is considered as the additional stress of the pipe. However, the calculation of the additional stress is very complex and time-consuming. A method based on the concept of stress indices is proposed in present work. To investigate the influence of size and constraint and the stress indices, the finite element analysis for pipe with different sizes trunnion welding attachment under different constraint forms are done. The stress indices are calculated for each case, respectively. Furthermore, the fitted expressions for stress indices are proposed for general case. To verify this method, an analysis according to ASME Code Case for piping with trunnion is done. The comparison of the result between present method and the ASME Code Case method show slight different. Therefore, the stress indices method for the stress analysis of pipe with trunnion welding attachment can be an alternative method for ASME Code Cases. The advantage of present method in that it simplified the analysis process by introduces the stress indices. With the rapid development of railway traffic system, real-time semantic segmentation plays a crucial role in railway track scene monitoring. However, most of the existing methods use lightweight convolution to reduce the computational complexity, which results in reduced accuracy. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a real-time semantic segmentation network called TICNet, which is specifically used for accurate segmentation of railway track scenes. TICNet uses a novel three-branch structure designed for efficient feature extraction and accurate segmentation. Results on the RailSem19 dataset show that TICNet has a segmentation accuracy of 62.36% mIoU with an inference speed of 81.2 FPS, which is significantly better than many existing methods.

In this paper, hierarchical micro/nano structures composed of periodic microstructures, LIPSS, and nanoparticles were fabricated by femtosecond laser processing. A layer of hydrophobic species was formed on the micro/nano structures through perfluorosilane modification. The reflectivity and hydrophobicity’s influence mechanisms of structural height, duty cycle, and size are experimentally elucidated. The average reflectivity of the silicon surface in the visible light band is reduced to 3.0% under the optimal parameters, and the surface exhibits a large contact angle of 172.3 ± 0.8 ° and a low sliding angle of 4.2 ± 1.4 °. Finally, the durability of anti-reflection and superhydrophobicity is also confirmed. This study deepens the understanding of the principles of anti-reflection and superhydrophobicity and expands the design and preparation methods for self-cleaning and anti-reflective surfaces. © 2024, The Authors.
