Redundancy makes soft manipulators manage to complete a variety of tasks in complex environments. However, a pseudo-inverse kinematics controller for redundant soft manipulators simply maximizes the manipulability while ignoring some material constraints, e.g., actuation saturation and control noise. As manipulability is the indicator for the dexterity of motion in all directions of the redundant soft manipulators, this work proposes an optimization based controller, where the manipulability and robustness are optimized for a cable-driven redundant soft manipulator to adapt actuation saturation and control noise. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Ischemic stroke is a high-risk brain disease that causes disability or death in adults worldwide. Rapid diagnosis and treatment, as well as segmentation of ischemic lesions from stroke medical images so that doctors can evaluate and develop treatment plans, are crucial to reducing brain damage. Currently, doctors’ manual segmentation of lesions is time-consuming and labor-intensive and prone to missed or misdiagnosed diagnoses, delaying the best time for treatment. A well-trained neural network is considered as an effective aid for image segmentation tasks. However, in the traditional neural network down-sampling process, the pooling layer loses feature information, and the lost information significantly impacts the edge regions. While for medical images, edge regions are crucial features in the segmentation process. Therefore, to address the above issues, in this paper we improve upon the existing stroke lesion segmentation algorithm U-net, we design a segmentation network based on wavelet pooling and attention mechanisms. The network was tested on ISLES 2018 and ISLES 2022 datasets, and the Dice coefficient improved by 2.13% and 1.93% compared to baseline network, respectively.

Discretizing Continuous Action space with Unimodal Probability Distributions for On-Policy Reinforcement Learning

For on-policy reinforcement learning, discretizing action space for continuous control can easily express multiple modes and is straightforward to optimize. However, without considering the inherent ordering between the discrete atomic actions, the explosion in the number of discrete actions can possess undesired properties and induce a higher variance for the policy gradient estimator. In this paper, we introduce a straightforward architecture that addresses this issue by constraining the discrete policy to be unimodal using Poisson probability distributions. This unimodal architecture can better leverage the continuity in the underlying continuous action space using explicit unimodal probability distributions. We conduct extensive experiments to show that the discrete policy with the unimodal probability distribution provides significantly faster convergence and higher performance for on-policy reinforcement learning algorithms in challenging control tasks, especially in highly complex tasks such as Humanoid. We provide theoretical analysis on the variance of the policy gradient estimator, which suggests that our attentively designed unimodal discrete policy can retain a lower variance and yield a stable learning process. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper considers the problem of monitoring and adaptively estimating an environmental field, such as temperature or salinity, using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The AUV moves in the field and persistently measures environmental scalars and its position in its local coordinate frame. The environmental scalars are approximately linearly distributed over the region of interest, and an adaptive estimator is designed to estimate the gradient. By orthogonal decomposition of the velocity of the AUV, a linear time-varying system is equivalently constructed, and the sufficient conditions on the motion of the AUV are established, under which the global exponential stability of the estimation error system is rigorously proved. Furthermore, an estimate of the exponential convergence rate is given, and a reference trajectory that maximizes the estimate of the convergence rate is obtained for the AUV to track. Numerical examples verify the stability and efficiency of the system.

The evolution of hierarchies in complex systems is an exciting phenomenon since hierarchies exist in many social and biological networks. So far, many approaches have been proposed, however, they are either based on the locality of the nodes or the cluster relationships between networks. These approaches often use traditional time-series network modeling methods that focus only on local static relationships between different nodes but ignore the dynamic interactions between real network nodes. Local static and dynamic global relationships should be considered to understand better the generation and maintenance of hierarchical phenomena in networks. To address this problem, we propose a long-term, flexible hierarchical evolution model for explaining the hierarchical phenomena arising in networks. Our model can integrate both local static and dynamic global information in the network and use time and higher-order inter-node interactions to integrate static and dynamic relationships. New interactions in the network are formed based on preference information between nodes, while old links fade out over time. In addition, we derive critical points for the hierarchical evolution of the system over long periods. Importantly, our model allows the comparison of network rank formation across different data as a way to perform rank evolution studies. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a Dynamic Chaotic Ant Colony Optimization (DCACO) algorithm is proposed to solve the problems of traditional Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm in mobile robot path planning, such as long time consuming, slow convergence speed and easy to fall into local optimum. In DCACO, cosine annealing strategy is used to improve the expectation heuristic factor to balance the global search ability and convergence speed of the algorithm. In addition, this paper proposes a dynamic chaotic ant colony system, whose core is that improved logistic chaotic operator disturbs pheromone update in the early stage of iteration to avoid falling into local optimization, and is eliminated in the later stage to ensure the convergence speed. The experimental results show that this algorithm is effective and superior in path searching performance and convergence speed compared with the existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a type of small non-coding RNAs which bind with the PIWI proteins to exert biological effects in various regulatory mechanisms. A growing amount of evidence reveals that exosomal piRNAs are potential biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases. Effective methods for the prediction of exosomal piRNAs are the foundation of piRNA functional research. In this study, we propose an end-to-end deep network for identifying exosomal piRNAs based on features learned from natural language processing (NLP) models for sequence embedding with attention mechanism. First, a benchmark dataset is constructed by processing piRNA subcellular localization annotated data and sequence data. Moreover, bagging positive unlabeled learning is applied to get the reliable negative set. Finally, we treat a piRNA sequence as a sentence and its k-mer subsequence as a token. Sequence embedding models with self-attention mechanism is designed to extract features from exosome piRNA sequences, which are used for the prediction task. Compared with three competing methods, our model achieves the best performance and reveals the key factors of exosomal piRNA sequences by the attention mechanism. Our model characterizes exosomal piRNAs and could be beneficial for researchers to investigate exosomal piRNAs’ functions.

In this paper, the problem of rudder-roll damping control for a class of cruise keeping ships subject to both actuator fault and state saturation is investigated. A manoeuvring and rudder control model of marine vessels is firstly reviewed based on the existing literature. Actuator faults which including partial loss of rudder effectiveness and actuator-bias faults are considered in the model. Then a switching control strategy is developed to compensate for the actuator faults and to guarantee the stability of the rudder-roll damping control system. Moreover, some relationship regarding state saturation bounds, actuator fault limits and control parameters are analyzed in this paper. Finally, simulation results are given to illustrate the proposed procedures and their effectiveness.

We study the problem of detecting an attack on a stochastic cyber-physical system. We aim to treat the problem in its most general form. We start by introducing the notion of asymptotically detectable attacks, as those attacks introducing changes to the system’s output statistics which persist asymptotically. We then provide a necessary and sufficient condition for asymptotic detectability. This condition preserves generality as it holds under no restrictive assumption on the system and attacking scheme. To show the importance of this condition, we apply it to detect certain attacking schemes which are undetectable using simple statistics. Our necessary and sufficient condition naturally leads to an algorithm which gives a confidence level for attack detection. Distributed energy resource (DER) including wind power, solar energy and energy storage system (ESS) are connected to the active distribution network (ADN) in various combination ways, which makes the distribution network have interaction. As a bridge connecting the transmission grid (TG) and micro grid (MG), ADN breaks the traditional operation pattern of TG+ADN+MG. Considering the physical connections and shared information among TG, ADN and MG, this paper proposes a decentralized and parallel analytical target cascading (ATC) algorithm for TG+ADN+MG multi-level co-optimization dispatch considering primary and secondary frequency regulation. To explore the synergistic ability of the TG+ADN+MG coping with uncertainties of DER, i.e., wind power, the primary and secondary frequency regulation of TG are implemented to cope with uncertainties. Furthermore, the distributional uncertainties of wind power and load are well modeled by data driven, which is proposed in our previous work [1]. An improved 6-bus system is used to test the proposed model, the numerical results illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.
