A cryogenic loop heat pipe (CLHP) is an efficient two-phase heat transfer device. It works without mechanical moving parts, external power, vibrations and electromagnetic interference. Hence, the CLHP can isolate optics and detectors from mechanical vibrations and improve image quality of large Far Infrared space telescopes. In this experiment, the working fluid was nitrogen and the operating temperature range was 80-120K. The method of supercritical startup was by applying capillary pump with power In this paper, the effects of different capillary pump powers on supercritical startup characteristics, relationship between charge pressure and heat transfer limit were studied. In the end, the responsiveness and temperature stability with heat load changing cyclically were investigated. The CLHP could achieve successful startup under auxiliary heat load of 2W and got a heat transport capacity of 3W. © 2018 IET Conference Publications. All rights reserved.

Mechanical Properties of the Cured Laminates on the Hot-press Tackified Preforms in Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding

A hot-press tackified preform was used to improve the uniformity of the laminates thickness and the mechanical properties of the obtained laminates were studied using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding（VARTM）. Two modified preforms were prepared under 0.1 and 0.6 MPa in an autoclave and then were used to fabricate the laminates via VARTM. Permeability and thickness distribution of the laminates were obtained by using a special device. Moreover, the tensile and compressive strengths of the obtained laminates were studied and compared with the unmodified ones. Results show that the tackified laminates present a maximum and minimum thickness under 0.1 and 0.6 MPa, respectively. The thicknesses and in-plane permeability of the tackified laminates, with better thickness uniformity, are significantly decreased compared with that of the unmodified cases, while the tensile and compressive strengths of the tackified laminates are improved obviously. Results show that the mechanical property of the tackified laminates prepared by hotpressing at 0.1 MPa is better than that processed at 0.6 MPa.

"Little Red Dots" (LRDs) are an abundant high-redshift population newly discovered by the James Webb space Telescope (JWST). They are characterized by a red color in the rest-frame optical band, compact morphology, and broad Balmer emission lines (FWHM >∼ 1000 km s−1) that suggest an AGN nature. Using a method of pixel-by-pixel color selection and relaxing the compactness criteria, we identify three of the first dual LRD candidates in the COSMOS-Web survey with projected separations of 0.′′2-0.′′4 (1-2 pkpc at their photometric redshifts). A comparison between existing LRD samples and mock data reveals that the projected separations of these dual LRD candidates are unlikely to result from chance projections of objects at different redshifts. In one case (CW-B5-15958), the dual LRD includes two bright sources (mF444W = 24.3 and 24.8) with characteristic V-shape spectral energy distribution (SEDs) and photometric redshifts consistent with each other. We find that CW-B5-15958 has a faint off-centered component and a companion galaxy. In the other two dual systems, the brighter LRD exhibits a V-shape SED, while the fainter LRD (mF444W>∼ 26) is undetected in both F115W and F150W. These discoveries suggest that the angular auto-correlation function (ACF) of LRDs exhibits a significant excess (∼ 3 × 102 times) on sub-arcsec (kilo-parsec) separations compared to the extrapolation of a power-law ACF of JWST-found AGNs measured over 10′′-100′′. Follow-up spectroscopic confirmation of their redshifts and the construction of a larger sample are essential to advance our understanding of the evolution of supermassive black holes and the importance of mergers in the early universe. © 2024, CC BY.

According to the current main application mode of remote sensing satellites, users obtain the original image data, carries on the complex data processing, and get the required substantive content by filtering results after processing. The poor data timeliness, the large amount of data transmitted from satellite to ground, and the heavy workload of the ground processing system are main drawbacks of such modes. This article presents an intelligent onboard processing and multichannel transmission concept for infrared remote sensing satellites to solve above problems. Through applying cloud detection, fire spot detection, water pollution detection and other algorithms, infrared remote sensing data of the satellite payload is processed onboard, so that typical user-focused events with exact location information are discovered. The event information can be broadcast to the ground immediately through the short message channel of Chinese Beidou Navigation system, which is a real-time data transmission channel, so application users can quickly respond. In addition, there is a mid-speed data transmission channel for slicing images of areas of interest (AOI), as well as a high-speed data transmission channel for complete image data, to meet the needs of different users. In general, this article provides an overview of onboard information extraction and multichannel distribution for infrared remote sensing satellites, which can be used as a reference for satellite applications and engineering development.

Previous observations of dark vortices in Neptune’s atmosphere, such as Voyager-2’s Great Dark Spot, have been made in only a few, broad-wavelength channels, which has hampered efforts to pinpoint their pressure level and what makes them dark. Here, we present Very Large Telescope (Chile) MUSE spectrometer observations of Hubble space Telescope’s NDS-2018 dark spot, made in 2019. These medium-resolution 475 – 933 nm reflection spectra allow us to show that dark spots are caused by a darkening at short wavelengths ( 700 nm). This bright feature is much deeper than previously studied dark spot companion clouds and may be connected with the circulation that generates and sustains such spots. © 2023, CC BY.

We report observations of the Didymos-Dimorphos binary asteroid system using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) in support of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test mission. Our observations on UT 2022 September 15 provided a preimpact baseline and the first measure of Didymos-Dimorphos’s spectral emissivity at λ = 0.87 mm, which was consistent with the handful of siliceous and carbonaceous asteroids measured at millimeter wavelengths. Our postimpact observations were conducted using four consecutive executions each of ALMA and the ACA spanning from T+3.52 to T+8.60 hr, sampling thermal emission from the asteroids and the impact ejecta. We scaled our preimpact baseline measurement and subtracted it from the postimpact observations to isolate the flux density of millimeter-sized grains in the ejecta. Ejecta dust masses were calculated for a range of materials that may be representative of Dimorphos’s S-type asteroid material. The average ejecta mass over our observations is consistent with 1.3-6.4 × 10⁷ kg, with the lower and higher values calculated for amorphous and crystalline silicates, respectively. Owing to the likely crystalline nature of S-type asteroid material, the higher value is favored. These ejecta masses represent 0.3%-1.5% of Dimorphos’s total mass and are in agreement with lower limits on the ejecta mass based on measurements at optical wavelengths. Our results provide the most sensitive measure of millimeter-sized material in the ejecta and demonstrate the power of ALMA for providing supporting observations to spaceflight missions. © 2023. The optical remote sensing imaging simulation plays vital roles in the improvement of imaging system design and the evaluation of image processing algorithms. By combing quantitative radiation and computer graphics, an entire chains simulation system is designed for optical remote sensing. Analyzing the imaging process, physical models for entire image chains are built, including BRDF model, radiative transfer model, imaging system model and platform model. Based on scene data measurement, physical properties correlation and scene management, a three-dimensional (3D) digital scene is constructed. The simulation software is developed on the basis of image chains models. A material spectral database and an atmospheric parameter database compose the database system together. The software is divided into three modules: visibility calculation module, radiance calculation module and imaging module. The simulation images for different solar zenith angles and observing zenith angles are obtained. The results prove the accuracy of the simulation models and software.

Bowen ratio (β) is the ratio of sensible heat (H) to latent heat (LE), which reflected the energy balance and partitioning process between soil, vegetation, and atmosphere. Revealing the spatial patterns of β would benefit understanding the variation of energy partitioning in terrestrial ecosystems and its reciprocal relationship with environmental change. Here, we calculated β by integrating sensible and latent heat flux values from 80 flux observation sites based on eddy covariance method in ChinaFLUX to analyze the spatial pattern and dominant factors of β in China. Results showed that terrestrial ecosystems in China had an average β of 0.64±0.47, suggesting the strong regulating effect of ecosystems on the radiative warming in China. β significantly varied with ecosystem types in which desert has the highest β (2.08) while wetland showed the lowest β (0.37). β of terrestrial ecosystems in China showed a significant latitudinal pattern, increasing linearly with the increase of latitude, and showed specific patterns in forest and cropland ecosystems. However, β did not present a clear longitudinal and vertical pattern in different ecosystems except cropland. The spatial pattern of β was dominated by vegetation factors including gross primary productivity (GPP). However, the dominant role of vegetation factors varied with the climate and soil conditions, which showing that the dominant role of GPP gradually decreased from the hot and humid subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest region to the low temperature arid temperate desert region. These findings demonstrated the spatial variation and its mechanism of terrestrial ecosystems β and provided insight into the future of vegetation mitigation of global climate change. © 2023, The Authors.
