The need for assistive devices such as lower limb exoskeletons is steadily growing, making quick and precise gait recognition essential for optimal operation of these apparatuses. The knowledge distillation method was applied to gait recognition in this work. First, we took participant lower limb gait data, which we then resampled with step frequency taken into account. Next, multi-layer perceptron (MLP) with distinct layers were modeled by educators and students. The process of knowledge distillation was used to improve the accuracy of participant activity recognition by transferring knowledge from the sophisticated teacher model to the lightweight student model. On the training set, the teacher model's accuracy average was 96.4%. Following the process of knowledge distillation, the accuracy of the student model was 95.48%, representing a 1.12% improvement compared to the non-distilled model, with only 0.53M parameters and shorter training duration. The results demonstrate that knowledge distillation can improve the recognition speed and stability of gait recognition models, enabling more accurate and reliable results within the same patient population, thus providing more effective support for medical diagnosis and rehabilitation treatment. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2024.

The tonal components in ship radiated noise often contain rich target feature information, so it can be used as the main signal for passive sonar detection. However, these tonal components are typically submerged in the ambient noise. Adaptive line enhancers can suppress background noise and enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the tonal components. In this letter, the frequency-domain driven Zero-Attracting Adaptive Liner Enhancer (ZA-ALE) algorithm is exploited to analyze sea trial data in the South China Sea. Compared with conventional ALE, ZA-ALE can obtain at least 6 dB extra SNR gain with simulation data and 1.49 dB extra SNR gain with sea trials data. The results demonstrate that the ZA-ALE algorithm exhibits good noise suppression capabilities. © 2023 IEEE.

This study prepared polyvinylidene fluoride/zinc oxide (PVDF/ZnO) piezoelectric films using electrospinning. The films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and their performance was tested to determine the optimal ZnO doping ratio of 15 wt%. Sensor sensitive elements were created using screen printing, and a non-array sensor layout was designed, resulting in a tactile sensor cushion. A pressure data acquisition system was developed using a microcontroller to collect sitting posture data. A posture recognition system was built using a support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithm, achieving a recognition accuracy of 88.33% with different kernel functions. Finally, the pressure distribution on the sensor array was displayed through a graphical interface. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2024.

In order to achieve accurate segmentation of gait phases for precise real-time control of lower limb exoskeleton robots, the periodic statistical analysis of human motion posture by using the inertial measurement unit is conducted. In current research, the data of forward and turning gait types were acquired and every gait type data were devised into eight for different gait phase segmentation. During the process, the phase division values for different types of subjects were calculated and the phase division of different subjects with the same gait type was calculated. The standard deviations for different gaits and phases for the same experimenter are all below 10, primarily oscillated around 4. For gait data from different subjects, the percentages at the same phase are all below 3. The results showed that the results from the feasible method could better accord with the characteristics of each stage of actual *** those results could provide reference for real-time judgment of gait phase and technical support for intelligent control of lower limb exoskeletons. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2024.

The PDMS/GO composite film with porous structure was successfully prepared by sacrificial template method. The output performance test and morphology characterization analysis of composite films with different sacrificial particle sizes, different thicknesses and different mass fractions of graphene oxide (GO) were carried out. The optimal particle size and thickness were 63 ~ 75 μm and 3 mm, respectively, and the optimal doping ratio was 10wt %, and the triboelectric flexible sensor array was prepared. Design signal conversion circuit, power module, reset circuit, gating circuit, and upload to the host computer to process data and display. In the process of pulse signal acquisition, five groups of pulse data were collected from four students, and the collected data were analyzed and compared. The experimental results show that the five groups of pulse data of each student are almost consistent, and the influence of the subjects ' breathing and other subtle factors during the test will lead to different test results. Through the overall analysis, the overall difference value of the data is small, and the maximum difference is within0.15V. It shows that the sensor performs well in terms of sensitivity and repeatability. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2024.

An asymmetric capacitive haptic sensor structure with three-dimensional force detection capability has been designed. The sensor unit comprises a upper public electrode, three under electrode plates and fork finger electrodes. Developed a visualization interface for this system by PyQt5. A series of tests were conducted on the sensor, including tensile and flex fatigue tests, single and dynamic pressure performance tests, tangential force performance tests and three-dimensional force tests. The response time of the sensor was found to be 3.5 seconds, while the recovery time was 5.5 seconds. The sensitivity of the Z-axis was 0.081 Kpa-1 in the range of 0 to 4.22 Kpa and 0.014 Kpa-1 in the range of 4.22 to 29.31 Kpa, the sensitivities in the positive and negative directions of the X-axis was 0.223 pF/N and -0.248 pF/N, while the sensitivities in the positive and negative directions of the Y-axis was 0.242 pF/N and -0.243 pF/N. The tests demonstrates that the sensor exhibited satisfactory flexibility, repeatability, and a linearity of 0.16%, thereby ensuring reliable measurement outcomes. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2024.

Comprehensive Study of Inversion Methods for Sound Speed Profiles in the South China Sea

Traditional acquisition method of sound speed profiles using hydro-acoustic instruments is accurate but time-consuming and *** overcome this problem,some inversion methods have been developed over the last few *** this study,a comprehensive comparison of two inversion methods–the acoustic inversion method(AIM)and the satellite observation reconstruction method(SOR)–is *** AIM,the sound speed profile is first parameterized by the empirical orthogonal function(EOF)and the optimal parameters are searched by simulated annealing algorithm with respect to the cross-correlation function of the receiving signal and the simulation *** SOR,remotely sensed data are used to construct sound speed *** experiment was conducted in the northeast of the South China Sea to verify the two *** methods can obtain sound speed profiles quickly and *** with the sound speed profiles obtained by a conductivity-temperature-depth(CTD)instrument,the root-meansquare-error(RMSE)of AIM is 0.55 m s^(−1) and that of SOR is 1.71 m s^(−1).It is clear that AIM provides better inversion performance than *** primary benefit of AIM is that this method has no limitation to the inversion *** simulation results of sound propagation in regard to the inversed sound speed profiles show that the transmission losses of AIM and CTD are consistent and that of SOR is adversely affected by the inversion error of the sound speed and the inversion *** SOR has particular advantages in the inversion ***,all of these advantages make the AIM particularly valuable in practice.

The dynamic underwater temperature field and surface infrared characteristic of fluid field behind underwater vehicle in temperature stratification water was studied in this paper, using simulated water tank experiment and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) study. In simulated water tank experiment study, the physical parameters of radio controlled scaled underwater vehicle model was fabricated with similarity ratio 1:100. Using the radio-controlled model, the movement of underwater vehicle in negative temperature gradient water was imitated, and the thermal evolution process of fluid field in water surface and under water was obtained by IR imager and underwater temperature sensors respectively. In theoretical study, the 3D N-S(Navier-Stocks) functions were calculated to verify the water tank results, and the initial condition and boundary condition were set using water tank experiment parameters. Both the simulated results and water tank experimental results could match with each other, and the results showed that: The evolutionary process of "cold trailing wake" in water surface could divided into four stages, which were called initial generation stage, stable development stage, diffusion stage and destruction stage;By reason of propeller's mixing effect, the hot water and the cold water exchanged heat unceasingly, which induced that the temperature near the surface was reduced, the temperature beneath the water was raised, and the temperature near the routes of model fluctuated with time. By comparing the theoretical value with the experimental value, the maximum simulation error of the theoretical model was 3.9dB. © 2023 SPIE.

Co-salient object detection (CoSOD) is to find the salient and recurring objects from a series of relevant images, where modeling inter-image relationships plays a crucial role. Different from the commonly used direct learning structure that inputs all the intra-image features into some well-designed modules to represent the inter-image relationship, we resort to adopting a recursive structure for inter-image modeling, and propose a two-tier recursion network (TRNet) to achieve CoSOD in this paper. The two-tier recursive structure of the proposed TRNet is embodied in two stages of inter-image extraction and distribution. On the one hand, considering the task adaptability and inter-image correlation, we design an inter-image exploration with recursive reinforcement module to learn the local and global inter-image correspondences, guaranteeing the validity and discriminativeness of the information in the step-by-step propagation. On the other hand, we design a dynamic recursion distribution module to fully exploit the role of inter-image correspondences in a recursive structure, adaptively assigning common attributes to each individual image through an improved semi-dynamic convolution. Experimental results on five prevailing CoSOD benchmarks demonstrate that our TRNet outperforms other competitors in terms of various evaluation metrics.
