The Embarrassingly parallel (EP) algorithm which is typical of many Monte Carlo applications provides an estimate of the upper achievable limits for double precision performance of parallel supercomputers. Recently, Intel released Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture as a many-core co-processor. MIC often offers more than 50 cores each of which can run four hardware threads as well as 512-bit vector instructions. In this paper, we describe how the EP algorithm is accelerated effectively on the platforms containing MIC using the offload execution model. The result shows that the efficient implementation of EP algorithm on MIC can take full advantage of MIC's computational resources and achieves a speedup of 3.06 compared with that on Intel Xeon E5-2670 CPU. Based on the EP algorithm on MIC and an effective task distribution model, the implementation of EP algorithm on a CPU-MIC heterogeneous platform achieves the performance of up to 2134.86 Mop/s and 4.04 times speedup compared with that on Intel Xeon E5-2670 CPU.

Many big data applications receive and process data in real time. These data, also known as data streams, are generated continuously and processed online in a low latency manner. Data stream is prone to change dramatically in volume, since its workload may have a variation of several orders between peak and valley periods. Fully provisioning resources for stream processing to handle the peak load is costly, while over-provisioning is wasteful when to deal with lightweight workload. Cloud computing emphasizes that resource should be utilized economically and elastically. An open question is how to allocate query task adaptively to keeping up the input rate of the data stream. Previous work focuses on using either local or global capacity information to improve the cluster CPU resource utilization, while the bandwidth utilization which is also critical to the system throughput is ignored or simplified. In this paper, we formalize the operator placement problem considering both the CPU and bandwidth usage, and introduce the Elastic Allocator. The Elastic Allocator uses a quantitative method to evaluate a node's capacity and bandwidth usage, and exploit both the local and global resource information to allocate the query task in a graceful manner to achieve high resource utilization. The experimental results and a simple prototype built on top of Storm finally demonstrate that Elastic Allocator is adaptive and feasible in cloud computing environment, and has an advantage of improving and balancing system resource utilization.

In consideration of the continuous increasing demand of wireless data transmission, ultra-wideband spectrum sensing is crucial to support the cognitive communication in a ultra-wide frequency band. However, it is challenging to design ADCs that fulfill the Nyquist rate requirement for a ultra wide band. Spectrum sensing based on the sub-Nyquist sampling maybe the answer. We propose UWBSS: ultra-wideband spectrum sensing. With multiple sub-Nyquist sampling rates, UWBSS can reconstruct the occupied frequencies from the under sampled data directly without complex amplitudes reconstruction. Also We conduct an extensive study to characterize the effect on the accuracy of sub-Nyquist spectrum sensing of sampling rate, bandwidth resolution and the SNR of the original signal. The performance of UWBSS is verified by simulations.

distributed key-value database is widely used in Web 2.0 applications and cloud computing environments. It overcomes the weak performance and bad scalability of traditional relational database. But fault in distributed system will lead to errors, then the high performance is useless. So we should build a fault tolerance mechanism. On the other hand, in many application scenarios, transactional operations are inevitable. Some existing key-value databases utilize two-phase commit protocol or optimistic concurrency control in transaction processing. But the problems are sing-node failure and high overhead in protocol processing. Meanwhile, users' programming becomes more error-prone. This paper designs a fault tolerance and recovery mechanism on DStageDB, which is a distributed key-value database. We design an agent-based transaction processing mechanism. The transaction processing speed is improved and less user intervention is needed.

The large amounts of freely available open source software over the Internet are fundamentally changing the traditional paradigms of software development. Efficient categorization of the massive projects for retrieving relevant software is of vital importance for Internet-based software development such as solution searching, best practices learning and so on. Many previous works have been conducted on software categorization by mining source code or byte code, but were verified on only relatively small collections of projects with coarse-grained categories or clusters. However, Internet-based software development requires finer-grained, more scalable and language-independent categorization approaches. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to hierarchically categorize software projects based on their online profiles. We design a SVMbased categorization framework and adopt a weighted combination strategy to aggregate different types of profile attributes from multiple repositories. Different basic classification algorithms and feature selection techniques are employed and compared. Extensive experiments are carried out on more than 21,000 projects across five repositories. The results show that our approach achieves significant improvements by using weighted combination. Compared to the previous work, our approach presents competitive results with more finer-grained and multi-layered category hierarchy with more than 120 categories. Unlike approaches that use source code or byte code, our approach is more effective for large-scale and languageindependent software categorization. In addition, experiments suggest that hierarchical categorization combined with general keyword-based searching improves the retrieval efficiency and accuracy. In smart grid, privacy implications to individuals and their family is an important issue, due to the fine-grained usage data collection. Wireless communications are considered by many utility companies to obtain information. Network coding is exploited in smart grids, to enhance network performance in terms of throughput, delay, robustness, and energy consumption. However, Network Coding introduces new challenge for privacy preserving due to the encoding of packet in forwarder nodes. We propose a distributed privacy preserving scheme for network coding in smart grid, which considers the converged flows character of smart grid and exploits a homomorphic encryption function to decrease the complex in forwarder node. The message content of packet is encrypted and the tag of packet is encrypted by homomorphic encryption function. Then the forwarder node linear random codes the encrypted message contents and directly processes the tags cryptotext based on the homomorphism feature. It offers message content confidentiality privacy preserving feature, which can efficiently thwart traffic analysis. Extensive security analysis and performance evaluations demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed scheme. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

This paper presents an automatic deblurring approach for motion blur images. The approach explores the prior of the intensity and gradient to estimate the motion blur kernel from single blurred image. In this way, motion blur kernel could be well estimated not only on daytime images, but also on nighttime images. Efficient optimization method was given for the prior-based approach. Besides, a cost-effective method was also proposed to remove the noise of the kernel in the iterative kernel estimation. The proposed kernel enhancement approach could also improve the performance of other blind deblurring algorithm. Experimental results showed that the performance of the proposed algorithm was superior to many state-of-the-art blind deblurring algorithms, especially for nighttime images with saturated regions.

Github facilitates the pull-request mechanism as an outstanding social coding paradigm by integrating with social media. The review process of pull-requests is a typical crowdsourcing job which needs to solicit opinions of the community. Recommending appropriate reviewers can reduce the time between the submission of a pull-request and the actual review of it. In this paper, we firstly extend the traditional Machine Learning (ML) based approach of bug triaging to reviewer recommendation. Furthermore, we analyze social relations between contributors and reviewers, and propose a novel approach to recommend highly relevant reviewers by mining comment networks (CN) of given projects. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of these two approaches with quantitative evaluations. The results show that CN-based approach achieves a significant improvement over the ML-based approach, and on average it reaches a precision of 78% and 67% for top-1 and top-2 recommendation respectively, and a recall of 77% for top-10 recommendation. © 2014 IEEE.

Hidden terminal and collisions are well-known problems due to broadcasting nature of wireless network. In this paper, we address an efficient MAC protocol to evade the potential collisions caused by hidden terminals, where advanced phycical layer technique, full-duplex, is exploited to coordinate channel contention among nodes within two-hops range. Furhter-more, cooperative channel hopping(CCH) MAC is developed to improve the frequency efficiency by limiting the interference of hidden terminals and enabling a collision-free channel for further transmission. Basically, a fined channel hopping mechanism is proposed to avoid the continually interference and cooperative coordination is subjoined by the transmission of cyclic prefix. To the best of our knowledge, CCH-MAC validates the detection of subchannel contention on NI USRPs and evaluation via simulations shows that CCH-MAC achieves at least 35% throughput gain over FICA with a slightly loss in fairness.
