Background and hypothesis Previous studies show that people with severe mental illness (SMI) are at higher risk of COVID-19 mortality, however limited evidence exists regarding risk post-vaccination. We investigated COVID-19 mortality among people with schizophrenia and other SMIs before, during and after the UK vaccine roll-out. Study Design Using the Greater Manchester (GM) Care Record to access routinely collected health data linked with death records, we plotted COVID-19 mortality rates over time in GM residents with schizophrenia/psychosis, bipolar disorder (BD) and/or recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) from February 2020 to September 2021. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare mortality risk (risk ratios;RRs) between people with SMI (N=190,188) and age-sex matched controls (N=760,752), adjusted for sociodemographic factors, pre-existing comorbidities and vaccination *** Results Mortality risks were significantly higher among people with SMI compared with matched controls, particularly among people with schizophrenia/psychosis (RR 3.14, CI 2.66-3.71) and/or BD (RR 3.17, CI 2.15-4.67). In adjusted models, the relative risk of COVID-19 mortality decreased, though remained significantly higher than matched controls for people with schizophrenia (RR 1.53, CI 1.24-1.88) and BD (RR 2.28, CI 1.49-3.49), but not recurrent MDD (RR 0.92, CI 0.78-1.09). People with SMI continued to show higher mortality rate ratios relative to controls throughout 2021, during vaccination roll-out. Conclusions People with SMI, notably schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, were at greater risk of COVID-19 mortality compared to matched controls. Despite population vaccination efforts that have prioritised people with SMI, disparities still remain in COVID-19 mortality for people with SMI.

Detecting anomalies in multivariate time-series data is an important task in various real-world industries, but doing so is non-trivial because both the temporal dependency within the time series and correlations between multiple time series must be considered. Previous studies have only addressed one issue, resulting in limited performance. To address this, we propose a graph convolution-based recurrent encoder-decoder, called GC-RED. The model incorporates intra-dependencies and inter-correlations using a graph-construction process and an encoding-decoding process that encodes the graph with an attention-enhanced graph convolutional LSTM and then restores it. Anomaly detection and root cause identification are performed based on the reconstruction error. Considering that anomalies with various durations can occur in actual situations, the model includes a vanilla model reflecting single scales and a model reflecting multiple scales. The feasibility and usefulness of GC-RED are demonstrated by intensive experiments on several benchmark and real-world datasets with comparisons to other competitive methods. © 2024, The Authors. Professional development for college teachers is essential and improving teaching performance is a key aspect of this. To evaluate teaching performance in colleges and universities, we use student ratings for each lecturer and course. Investigating the characteristics of college teachers associated with teaching performance ratings can be valuable for students, teachers, universities, and higher education administrators. Previous studies have identified only some of the characteristics associated with teaching performance, and the data on ratings used in these studies was often collected from online rating/comment websites, which may not be reliable. This data-driven study aims to identify discriminative factors of teaching performance ratings for college teachers at a university in Guangdong, China. We collected comprehensive data on college teachers' characteristics and used data on teaching performance ratings obtained from the university's official channel. Our findings can inform policies and practices related to teaching evaluation and professional development in higher education. © 2023 IEEE.

With an increasing interest in the digitization effort of ancient manuscripts, ancient character recognition becomes one of the most important areas in the automated document image analysis. In this regard, we propose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based classifier to recognize the ancient Sundanese characters obtained from a digital collection of Southeast Asian palm leaf manuscripts. In this work, we utilize two different preprocessing techniques for the dataset. The first technique involves the use of geometric transformations, noise background addition, and brightness adjustment to augment the imbalanced samples to be fed into the classifier. The second technique makes use of the Otsu’s threshold method to binarize the characters and only uses the usual geometric transformations for the data augmentation. The proposed network with different data augmentation processes is trained on the training set and tested on the testing set. Image binarization from the second technique can outperform the performance of the CNN-based classifier upon the first technique by achieving a testing accuracy of 97.74%.

Adopting a deep learning model into bird sound classification tasks becomes a common practice in order to construct a robust automated bird sound detection system. In this paper, we employ a four-layer Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) formulated to classify different species of Indonesia scops owls based on their vocal sounds. Two widely used representations of an acoustic signal: log-scaled mel-spectrogram and Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) are extracted from each sound file and fed into the network separately to compare the model performance with different inputs. A more complex CNN that can simultaneously process the two extracted acoustic representations is proposed to provide a direct comparison with the baseline model. The dual-input network is the well-performing model in our experiment that achieves 97.55% Mean Average Precision (MAP). Meanwhile, the baseline model achieves a MAP score of 94.36% for the mel-spectrogram input and 96.08% for the MFCC input.

Markov state models (MSMs) have proven valuable in studying dynamics of protein conformational changes via statistical analysis of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In MSMs, the complex configuration space is coarse-grained into conformational states, with dynamics modeled by a series of Markovian transitions among these states at discrete lag times. Constructing the Markovian model at a specific lag time necessitates defining states that circumvent significant internal energy barriers, enabling internal dynamics relaxation within the lag time. This process effectively coarse-grains time and space, integrating out rapid motions within metastable states. Thus, MSMs possess a multi-resolution nature, where the granularity of states can be adjusted according to the time-resolution, offering flexibility in capturing system dynamics. This work introduces a continuous embedding approach for molecular conformations using the state predictive information bottleneck (SPIB), a framework that unifies dimensionality reduction and state space partitioning via a continuous, machine learned basis set. Without explicit optimization of the VAMP-based scores, SPIB demonstrates state-of-the-art performance in identifying slow dynamical processes and constructing predictive multi-resolution Markovian models. Through applications to well-validated mini-proteins, SPIB showcases unique advantages compared to competing methods. It autonomously and self-consistently adjusts the number of metastable states based on specified minimal time resolution, eliminating the need for manual tuning. While maintaining efficacy in dynamical properties, SPIB excels in accurately distinguishing metastable states and capturing numerous well-populated macrostates. This contrasts with existing VAMP-based methods, which often emphasize slow dynamics at the expense of incorporating numerous sparsely populated states. The number of findings in cancer genomics research has grown rapidly in the last decade due to the decline in the cost of human sequencing and genotyping. However, the majority of the reported significant marker associated with cancer traits are based on European and East Asian population. Large population such as South Asian and South-East Asian population are under-represented in genomics research. In this study, we explored the possibility of computing a Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) of colorectal cancer on our test sample based on reported significant Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP). The SNPs used to compute the risk score were collected from GWAS Central and GWAS Catalog. Significant SNPs from IC3 study were used as a benchmark. The result shows that calculating colorectal cancer risk score using reported significant marker from different population group is possible. The p-value of our statistic model shows significant differences between case and control group risk score.

Improvement of data management about weather in Indonesia is very supportive of the need for weather information. Currently, the weather information that is disseminated to the public is only based on sensor location points that are spread across Indonesia. However, supporting data generated from these sensors is only limited to certain areas. We hence develop a database system that can help collect weather information automatically via Twitter. This facilitates the Indonesian people in knowing weather information based on the completeness of data from sensor data and Twitter. The steps from the database that are built will be very helpful in collecting data about the weather throughout Indonesia. The basic step that we use in our database are conceptual, logical and physical design. The information obtained in this study is very important for efficient and effective data collection to achieve real-time automation of weather information. © 2021 IEEE.

Bayesian multinomial logistic-normal (MLN) models are popular for the analysis of sequence count data (e.g., microbiome or gene expression data) due to their ability to model multivariate count data with complex covariance structure. However, existing implementations of MLN models are limited to small datasets due to the non-conjugacy of the multinomial and logistic-normal distributions. Motivated by the need to develop efficient inference for Bayesian MLN models, we develop two key ideas. First, we develop the class of Marginally Latent Matrix-T Process (Marginally LTP) models. We demonstrate that many popular MLN models, including those with latent linear, non-linear, and dynamic linear structure are special cases of this class. Second, we develop an efficient inference scheme for Marginally LTP models with specific accelerations for the MLN subclass. Through application to MLN models, we demonstrate that our inference scheme are both highly accurate and often 4-5 orders of magnitude faster than MCMC.

Semi-supervised learning algorithms make use of both labelled training data and unlabelled data. However, the visual domain gap between these sets poses a challenge which prevents deep learning models from obtaining the results they have achieved most especially in the field of medical imaging. Recently, self-training with deep learning has become a powerful approach to leverage labelled training and unlabelled data. However, a challenge of generating noisy pseudo-labels and placing over-confident labelling belief on incorrect classes leads to deviation from the solution. To solve this challenge, the study investigates a curriculum-styled approach for deep semi-supervised segmentation which relaxes and treats pseudo-labels as continuous hidden variables by developing an adaptive pseudo-label generation strategy to jointly optimized the pseudo-label generation and selection process. A regularization scheme is further proposed to smoothen the probability outputs and sharpen the less represented pseudo-label regions. The proposed method was evaluated on three publicly available Computer Tomography (CT) scan benchmarks and extensive experiments on all modules have demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed method. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
