Nitrogen Pretreatment of Growth Substrates for Vacancy-Saturated MoS2

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) are considered promising materials for optoelectronics due to their unique optical and electric properties. However, their potential has been limited by the occurrence of atomic vacancies during synthesis. While post-treatment processes have demonstrated the passivation of such vacancies, they increase process complexity and affect the TMDC’s quality. We here introduce the concept of pretreatment as a facile and powerful route to solve the problem of vacancies in MoS2. Low-temperature nitridation of the sapphire substrate prior to growth provides a nondestructive method to MoS2 modification without introducing new processing steps or increasing the thermal budget. Spectroscopic characterization and atomic-resolution microscopy reveal the incorporation of nitrogen from the sapphire surface layer into chalcogen vacancies. The resulting MoS2 with nitrogen-saturated defects shows a decrease in midgap states and more intrinsic doping as confirmed by ab initio calculations and optoelectronic measurements. The demonstrated pretreatment method opens up new routes toward future, high-performance 2D electronics, as evidenced by a 3-fold reduction in contact resistance and a 10-fold improved performance of 2D photodetectors. © 2023 American Chemical Society

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells(MSCs)have demonstrated therapeutic efficacy for bone regeneration in animal and clinical *** MSCs were initially thought to differentiate to various cell types to replace the injured/diseased tissue,it is now accepted that these cells secrete factors to promote tissue repair.1 Among these factors,small extracellular vesicles(sEVs)of size 50–200 nm,which include the exosomes,have been identified as the principal agent mediating the wide-ranging therapeutic efficacy of MSCs.2 Several studies have also reported the therapeutic effects of MSC-sEVs to enhance bone repair in animal models,as recently reviewed.3 However,the cellular processes and mechanisms mediated by MSC-sEVs in bone regeneration remain to be fully elucidated.

Computer vision has emerged as an important subject of study, with several practical applications in a wide range of domains. OpenCV, a widely used framework, has played an important role in allowing computer vision tasks. This study presents an AI-driven Python implementation of the OpenCV framework to expand its capabilities. Data collecting and pre-processing, feature extraction, model selection and training, and Python-based system implementation are all part of the proposed system. A thorough examination of system performance indicates its advantage over competing approaches. The system’s flexibility enables it to handle a variety of computer vision tasks, such as gesture recognition, face detection, and object recognition. This paper advances AI-powered computer vision systems by providing significant insights into the implementation of OpenCV with Python. The focus of future work will be on improving system accuracy and broadening its functional range. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Benefits of a failure friendly culture, e.g., learning from failure, are widely known in occupational settings. Validated scales have been developed to measure organizational failure culture and individuals' mind-sets on failure. While research on learning from failure exists in secondary education, scales for higher education are lacking. To support both higher education engineering instructors and students, this contribution aims to develop a Culture of Failure Scale to assess students' and lecturers' handling of failures in engineering higher education settings. This data-driven approach helps inform instructors about aspects of educational settings that are safe and conducive to learning and supports their students to develop a mind-set where failures are seen as a source for improvements and learning. Exemplary application of the developed scale is shown by assessing the failure culture in different groupings, e.g., gender, between two participating German and US institutions. © 2022 IEEE.

In the continuous pursuit of an energy-efficient alternative to the energy-intensive mechanochemical process, we developed a coprecipitation strategy for synthesizing halide-based solid-state electrolytes that warrant both structural control and commercial scalability. In this study, we propose a new coprecipitation approach to synthesized Li3InCl6, exhibiting both structural and electrochemical performance stability, with a high ionic conductivity of 1.42 × 10-3 S cm-1, comparable to that of traditionally prepared counterparts. Through the in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction technique, we unveil the stability mechanisms and rapid chemical reactions of Li3InCl6 under dry Ar, dry O2, and high-humidity atmosphere, which were not previously reported. Furthermore, the fast reversibility capability of moisture-exposed Li3InCl6 was tracked under vacuum, revealing the optimal recovery conditions at low temperatures (150-200 °C). This work addresses the critical challenges in structural engineering and sustainable mass production and provides insights into chemical reactions under real-world conditions. © 2024 The Authors. Making Moves Move: Fast Emissions Estimates for Repeated Transportation Policy Scenario Analyses

Efforts to reduce US emissions from transportation rely greatly on the Environmental Protection Agency’s MOVES software to estimate pollutant emissions, a high-precision, computationally intensive tool with many required inputs. To compare numerous scenarios at scale, decision-makers need a faster, user-friendly, and credible emissions estimator. This study introduces MOVESLite, a framework for making fast, highly accurate predictions (with respect to MOVES) of emissions tailored to a user's county, with a limited, more user-friendly number of inputs. MOVESLite uses county- and pollutant-specific models trained on previous MOVES estimates to estimate transportation emissions immediately. While MOVES may take minutes-to-hours to estimate one county-year’s emissions, MOVESLite takes approximately 1 millisecond, with acceptable accuracy. We validate MOVESLite, comparing thousands of possible models’ accuracy for random samples of US counties, and we implement a case study of public transportation planning in Tompkins County, NY. MOVESLite aims to help decision-makers compare and select effective climate action policies. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Literacy, or the ability to read and write, is a crucial indicator of success in life and greater society. It is estimated that 85% of people in juvenile delinquent systems cannot adequately read or write, that more than half of those with substance abuse issues have complications in reading or writing and that two-thirds of those who do not complete high school lack proper literacy skills [1]. Furthermore, young children who do not possess reading skills matching grade level by the fourth grade are approximately 80% likely to not catch up at all [2]. Many may believe that in a developed country such as the United States, literacy fails to be an issue;however, this is a dangerous misunderstanding. Globally an estimated 1.19 trillion dollars are lost every year due to issues in literacy;in the USA, the loss is an estimated 300 billion [3]. To put it in more shocking terms, one in five American adults still fail to comprehend basic sentences [4]. Making matters worse, the only tools available now to correct a lack of reading and writing ability are found in expensive tutoring or other programs that oftentimes fail to be able to reach the required audience. In this paper, our team puts forward a new way of teaching English spelling and word recognitions to grade school students in the United States: Wordification. Wordification is a web application designed to teach English literacy using principles of linguistics applied to the orthographic and phonological properties of words in a manner not fully utilized previously in any computer-based teaching application. © 2023 IEEE.

Aluminum metal matrix composites (MMC) are potential materials for many applications due to their outstanding physical and mechanical properties. Reinforcements in the metallic matrix enhance the qualities of stiffness, specific strength, wear, creep, and fatigue when compared to conventional engineering materials. The discussion covered the corrosion behavior of strontium (Sr) reinforced with aluminum–magnesium and aluminum–copper. Utilizing electrochemical studies such electrochemical impedance spectra, linear polarization tests, open-circuit potential, and potentiodynamic tests, the corrosion resistance of the Al-MMC composites created in this study was examined. The linear polarization resistance (LPR) method of the Gamry Reference Potentiostat is used to evaluate the rate of corrosion of different Al-MMCs. Sr is frequently utilized in the casting industry to modify hypoeutectic aluminum–silicon (Al–Si) alloys’ eutectic silicon. Sr has been found to increase the amount and severity of casting faults, particularly porosity and oxide inclusions, according to the reviews that have been done. This study made an effort to assess the effects of the reinforcing material Sr used in the synthesis of Al-MMC on the materials’ corrosion behavior. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The effect of the cyclic curricular design of modelling-based instruction with virtual labs

One issue facing teachers who implement model-based instruction within the school system is the tight curricular schedule. The ‘lesson objective tension’ calls for investigations to address instructional issues such as how to organise modelling-based instruction at the curriculum level which is across multiple units. We investigated the effect of the cyclic curricular design spacing out three modelling-based instruction units with virtual labs over three semesters, each involving 73, 181, and 150 junior high school students, respectively. Results indicate that, overall, the approach of modelling with virtual labs better promoted students’ scientific literacy than the traditional instruction did. Specifically, students with low and moderate school science achievements benefitted more as shown in their scientific literacy scores than did the high achievement students. Furthermore, this study found that receiving one unit of modelling-based instruction may not be sufficient to promote students’ scientific literacy, whereas the cyclic approach that suggests students receive two or more units of modelling-based instruction with virtual labs spaced over consecutive semesters had significant effects on promoting students’ scientific literacy. The results provide insights into when and how modelling-based learning with virtual labs can promote scientific literacy at a curricular level. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm(AAA)is a progressive aortic dilatation,causing~80%mortality upon ***,there is no approved drug therapy for *** repairs are invasive and risky and thus not recommended to patients with small AAAs which,however,account for~90%of the newly diagnosed *** is therefore a compelling unmet clinical need to discover effective non-invasive strategies to prevent or slow down AAA *** contend that the first AAA drug therapy will only arise through discoveries of both effective drug targets and innovative delivery *** is substantial evidence that degenerative smooth muscle cells(SMCs)orchestrate AAA pathogenesis and *** this study,we made an exciting finding that PERK,the endoplasmic reticulum(ER)stress Protein Kinase R-like ER Kinase,is a potent driver of SMC degeneration and hence a potential therapeutic ***,local knockdown of PERK in elastase-challenged aorta significantly attenuated AAA lesions in *** parallel,we also conceived a biomimetic nanocluster(NC)design uniquely tailored to AAA-targeting drug *** NC demonstrated excellent AAA homing via a platelet-derived biomembrane coating;and when loaded with a selective PERK inhibitor(PERKi,GSK2656157),the NC therapy conferred remarkable benefits in both preventing aneurysm development and halting the progression of pre-existing aneurysmal lesions in two distinct rodent models of *** summary,our current study not only establishes a new intervention target for mitigating SMC degeneration and aneurysmal pathogenesis,but also provides a powerful tool to facilitate the development of effective drug therapy of AAA.
