Illegal mining activities present significant environmental, economic, and safety challenges, particularly in remote and under-monitored regions. Traditional surveillance methods are often inefficient, labor-intensive, and unable to provide real-time insights. To address this issue, this study proposes a computer vision-based solution leveraging the state-of-the-art YOLOv11 Nano and Small models, fine-tuned for the detection of illegal mining activities. A specific dataset comprising aerial and ground-level images of mining sites was curated and annotated to train the models for identifying unauthorized excavation, equipment usage, and human presence in restricted zones. The proposed system integrates the hardware-software design of YOLOv11 on the PynqZ1 FPGA, offering a highperformance, low-latency, and energy-efficient solution suitable for real-time monitoring in resource-constrained environments. This hardware-accelerated approach combines FPGA's parallel processing capabilities with the lightweight deep learning models, enabling efficient deployment for automated illegal mining detection. By providing a scalable, real-time monitoring tool, this work contributes to the development of automated enforcement tools for the mining industry, ensuring better control and surveillance of mining activities. To validate the efficiency of deep learning deployment on edge devices, YOLOv11n was implemented on an FPGA, utilizing 70% of available LUTs, 50% of FFs, and 80% of DSPs, with 8.3 Mbits of on-chip memory. The design achieved 100.33 GOP/s throughput, 18 FPS at 55 ms latency, consuming 4.8 W, and delivering an energy efficiency of 20.90 GOP/s/W. © (2025), (Science and Information Organization). With the advent of state-of-the-art computer and digital technology, modern civilisation has been immensely facilitated and optimised. The Internet of Things (IoT) has grown in importance in recent years, allowing us to monitor our physical environments and broadening our horizons. The "practice, science, or art" of farming is defined as tending to land, growing crops with the use of different tools and techniques, and then selling the harvested food. If farmers optimise their operations with the help of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), they will be able to work much more efficiently and effectively. Data aggregation involves collecting information from multiple sensors. The data aggregation process is optimised by applying metaheuristic techniques. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is a method for modelling evolution that uses mutation, crossover, and natural selection as its building blocks. The key benefit of the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) approach is that it simultaneously considers local and global search, and it doesn't get trapped calculating its local minima. Naturalistic algorithms like ALO model their hunting behaviour after that of ant-lions and doodlebugs. It manages to find a happy medium between exploration and exploitation with just one operator. Experimental evidences show that the proposed metaheuristic technique, ABC-ALO, which combines the best elements of Artificial Bee Colony and Ant Lion Optimisation, is superior to existing metaheuristic approaches in terms of lifetime computation, or the number of alive nodes at different round counts. © 2025

With the advent of advancements in future sixth-generation (6G) communication systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, characterized by their limited computational and communication capacities, have become integral in our lives. These devices are deployed extensively to gather vast amounts of data in real-time applications. However, their restricted battery life and computational resources present significant challenges in meeting the requirements of advanced communication systems. Mobile Edge computing (MEC) has emerged as a promising solution to these challenges within the IoT realm in recent years. Despite its potential, securing MEC infrastructure in the context of IoT remains an open task. This study explores the operational dynamics of a secured IoT-enabled MEC infrastructure, focusing on providing real-time, on-demand, secure computational resources to low-powered IoT devices. It outlines a joint optimization problem to maximize computational throughput, minimize device energy consumption, reduce computational latency, and mitigate security overhead. An optimization algorithm is introduced to address these challenges by jointly allocating resources, thereby optimizing throughput, conserving energy, and meeting latency benchmarks through dynamic system adaptation. The effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm is demonstrated through comparisons with relevant benchmark schemes, highlighting its efficiency in various scenarios. This work showcases the potential of advancements in encryption to deliver scalable security solutions with reduced resource consumption as the number of devices increases. © 2013 IEEE.

Heat-related mortality remains health challenges exacerbated by climate change, with sex-based differences in outcomes, yet underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study examined transcriptomic responses to heat exposure in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 19 patients with heat stroke (HS;8 males, mean age 64.8 ± 6.6 yr;11 females, mean age 49.7 ± 11 yr) and 19 controls (11 males, mean age 48.9 ± 9.6 yr;8 females, mean age 44.9 ± 11.8 yr). At admission, gene expression revealed upregulation of heat shock protein genes, and pathway analysis demonstrated activation of heat shock and unfolded protein responses across both sexes consistent with proteotoxic stress. However, distinct metabolic, oxidative stress, cell cycle control, and immune responses were observed within each sex. Females displayed inhibition of protein synthesis, oxidative phosphorylation, and metabolic pathways, including glucose metabolism, indicative of a hypometabolic state. Males maintained metabolic activity precooling and enhanced adenosine triphosphate production postcooling. Females activated nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2)-mediated oxidative stress responses and inhibited DNA replication and mitosis, potentially mitigating genomic instability, whereas these pathways showed limited regulation in males. Females promoted innate immunity via interleukin (IL)-6, inflammasome, and triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 (TREM1) signaling, whereas males showed suppression of both innate and adaptive immunity, including IL-12, Th1, and T-cell receptor pathways. Upstream analysis identified over 100 transcription factors in both sexes. Males primarily relied on transcriptional mechanisms, whereas females also exhibited translational regulation via La ribonucleoprotein 1 (LARP1), fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1), insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA binding protein 1 (IGF2BP1), and eukaryotic translation initiation factor 6 (EIF6). In (t, n)-threshold secret sharing, a secret S is distributed among n participants such that any subset of size t can recover S, while any subset of size t − 1 or fewer learns nothing about it. For information-theoretic secret sharing, it is known that the share size must be at least as large as the secret, i.e., |S|. When computational security is employed using cryptographic encryption with a secret key K, previous work has shown that the share size can be reduced to (formula presented). In this paper, we present a construction achieving a share size of (formula presented). Furthermore, we prove that, under reasonable assumptions on the encryption scheme — namely, the non-compressibility of pseudorandom encryption and the non-redundancy of the secret key — this share size is optimal. Language acquisition is an integral part of early schooling, but young English language learners struggle to learn vocabulary and syntax since they are not provided with specialized instruction. Conventional teaching may vary according to different learning speeds and it leads to unbalanced levels of proficiency among students and possibly leading to disengagement among slow learners. The present computer-assisted learning aids provide practice interactively but without real-time adaptation and personalized feedback, limiting their capacity to address learners’ unique problems. To overcome these constraints, this study suggests an Artificial Intelligence based personalized learning system that supports vocabulary and syntax learning via adaptive learning models, NLP-based chatbots and gamified interactive lessons. The system dynamically adapts content according to students’ most recent performance in real time to enable a personalized learning experience, which results in efficient Learning. The research has experimental study design, and two groups are considered, an AI-supported learning group and a traditional learning group. Pre-test and post-test design measures the effects of the system on vocabulary recall and syntax correctness. Other learner engagement rates like survey results and qualitative feedback inform learner experience and learning efficacy. Initial results indicate that learners working with the Artificial Intelligence powered learning system gained 25percent in recalling vocabulary and 30percent in syntax accuracy over the control group. Further, learner engagement rates are elevated because of real-time feedback and gamification components. These results emphasize the promise of AI-based personalized learning to boost language acquisition and lay the basis for further effective innovations in adaptive education technologies. © (2025), (Science and Information Organization). The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has revolutionized healthcare by enabling real-time monitoring, remote diagnosis, and seamless data exchange among medical devices and providers. However, the interconnected and distributed nature of IoMT systems exposes them to significant cybersecurity threats, including data breaches and unauthorized access. This study aims to develop a secure and scalable framework to safeguard IoMT environments using blockchain technology, federated learning, and dynamic consensus algorithms. The proposed approach integrates artificial intelligence to detect threats and employs federated learning to maintain patient privacy while training models collaboratively. Experimental evaluation of the framework shows improved data security, reduced response times, and enhanced system trustworthiness. The results suggest that the integration of blockchain and AI-driven mechanisms offers a robust solution to IoMT cybersecurity challenges, paving the way for more reliable and efficient healthcare systems.

Device-Level Learning-Based Distributed Power Control for Uplink NOMA in IoT Networks

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) addresses the massive connectivity issues in Internet of Things (IoT) networks operating under limited radio resources. This paper proposes a statistical learning-based novel power control mechanism for uplink data transmission in dense IoT networks where energy-constrained devices employ the power domain NOMA. The proposed mechanism has two stages and follows a distributed approach. The first stage uses an orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme, enabling devices to predict the number of active devices (network load) and device activation probability. In the second stage, devices utilize their network load prediction to determine the optimal number of transmission power levels for NOMA-based data transmission that meets the required latency-reliability constraint. Moreover, by using the probability of exception in network load prediction, devices are enabled to compute the optimal duration of the first phase. Results show that the average battery life in the proposed network load-aware adaptive NOMA scheme outperforms the conventional power-domain NOMA, where devices are unaware of the current network load and randomly select power levels. Moreover, when device activation probability is increased, the number of optimal power levels increases, consequently average battery life decreases. Furthermore, for the given number of installed devices, normalized mean square error (NMSE) in the device-level estimation of the current network load decreases as device activation probability increases. © 2015 IEEE.

Kilometer-Scale E3SM Land Model Simulation over North America

The development of a kilometer-scale E3SM Land Model (km-scale ELM) is an integral part of the E3SM project, which seeks to advance energy-related Earth system science research with state-of-the-art modeling and simulation capabilities on exascale computing systems. Through the utilization of high-fidelity data products, such as atmospheric forcing and soil properties, the km-scale ELM plays a critical role in accurately modeling geographical characteristics and extreme weather occurrences. The model is vital for enhancing our comprehension and prediction of climate patterns, as well as their effects on ecosystems and human activities. This study showcases the first set of full-capability, km-scale ELM simulations over various computational domains, including simulations encompassing 21.6 million land gridcells, reflecting approximately 21.5 million square kilometers of North America at a 1 km × 1 km resolution. We present the largest km-scale ELM simulation using up to 100,800 CPU cores across 2,400 nodes. This continental-scale simulation is 300 times larger than any previous studies, and the computational resources used are about 400 times larger than those used in prior efforts. Both strong and weak scaling tests have been conducted, revealing exceptional performance efficiency and resource utilization. The km-scale ELM uses the common E3SM modeling infrastructure and a general data toolkit known as KiloCraft. Consequently, it can be readily adapted for both fully-coupled E3SM simulations and data-driven simulations over specific areas, ranging from a single gridcell to the entire North America. © 2025, CC BY.
