In this paper, we describe a set of 3D and 4D visualization tools and techniques for CORIE, a complex environmental observation and forecasting system (EOFS) for the Columbia River. The Columbia River, a complex and highly variable estuary, is the target of numerous cross-disciplinary ecosystem research projects and is at the heart of multiple sustainable development issues with long reaching implications for the Pacific Northwest. However, there has been until recently no comprehensive and objective system available for modeling this environment, and as a consequence, researchers and agencies have had inadequate tools for evaluating the effects of natural resource management decisions. CORIE was designed to address this gap and is a major step towards the vision of a scalable, multi-use, real-time EOFS. Although CORIE already had a rich set of visualization tools, most of them produced 2D visualizations and did not allow for interactive visualization. Our work adds advanced interactive 3D tools to CORIE, which can be used for further inspection of the simulated and measured data.

We investigate and compare a few parallel preconditioning techniques in the iterative solution of large sparse linear systems arising from solid Earth simulation with and without using contact information in the domain partitioning process. Previous studies are focused on using static or matrix pattern based incomplete LU (ILU) preconditioners in a localized preconditioner implementation. Our current studies are concerned with preconditioner performance for solving two different cases with and without known contact information. For the cases with contact information, we use localized threshold value based incomplete LU (ILUT) preconditioner to improve efficiency. For the cases without contact information, we use a global sparse approximate inverse preconditioner with a static sparsity pattern to achieve robustness. Numerical results from simulating ground motion on a parallel supercomputer are given to compare the effectiveness of these parallel preconditioning techniques.

Summary form only given. We present a new wavelet coding technique, flexible block wavelet coding (FBWC). It is specially designed for delta frame compression. FBWC not only makes delta frame compression more efficient but also keeps the rate scalability and other scalabilities of wavelet based scalable video compression techniques. Based on this new delta frame compression technique, we have implemented a highly efficient rate scalable video codec. Its overall performance surpasses the video codec based on SPIHT and is comparable to that of H.263. Using FBWC, delta frames are compressed in three steps: First, we use motion compensation to eliminate the temporal redundancy between adjacent frames and the predicted error frames (PEF) are generated. Next, the PEF are transformed into the wavelet domain using the flexible block wavelet transform (FBWT). Finally, the zerotree coding mechanism and entropy coder are used to actually compress the FBWT transformed wavelet coefficients to the target data rate.

An Intelligent Diabetes Management System was developed by computer science students at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi to help people monitor and control the blood glucose level. In triangulated surface meshes, there are often very noticeable size variances (the vertices are distributed unevenly). The presented noise of such surface meshes is therefore composite of vast frequencies. We solve a diffusion partial differential equation numerically for noise removal of arbitrary triangular manifolds using an adaptive time discretization. The proposed approach is simple and is easy to incorporate into any uniform timestep diffusion implementation with significant improvements over evolution results with the uniform timesteps. As an additional alternative to the adaptive discretization in the time direction, we also provide an approach for the choice of an adaptive diffusion tensor in the diffusion equation.
