Repetitive, or multipass, processes are a class of 2D systems of both practical and algorithmic/theoretical interest whose dynamics cannot be analysed or controlled using standard (1D) systems theory. Recently it has been shown that the modelling of the boundary conditions, also known as the process initial conditions, is a crucial feature in the analysis and control of these processes. This paper presents some further results on the effects of so-called 'dynamic' process initial conditions on the controllability and stability properties of discrete linear repetitive processes. Previous work has shown that these dynamic process initial conditions alone can destroy the stability properties of these processes. Hence their effects must be 'adequately' accounted for the process modelling stage in order to ensure that subsequent analysis does not lead to incorrect results/conclusions. The main results developed in this paper can be summarised as follows. (i) Computationally efficient stability tests which can, in effect, be applied using standard, or 1D, linear systems tests. (ii) Characterisation of so-called pass controllability in the form of matrix rank based conditions. (iii) Conditions under which the dynamic process initial conditions can be selected to ensure stability and pass controllability. © 1999 IEEE.

In this paper, by exploiting the intrinsic structure of system equations and uncertainties, we first establish a nonconservative PID stabilization criterion for driver support systems. We then show some interesting results on positivity and connections of PID controllers. Finally, some extreme point results on PID α-stabilization are obtained. These results give certain explanations and justifications for the simulation results performed at German Aerospace research Center.

Deals with the problem of collision-free mobile robot motion in complex real environments without human control. A noncomputing method, oriented on realization by means of homogeneous neurolike structures (HNS), for such type of problems solution in real time is suggested. The principles of HNS function and structure of the mobile robot control system based on it are outlined. The practical realizations of an intelligent mobile robot control system based on HNS are described.

This paper deals with designing of intelligent man-machine interfaces capable of recognizing human gestures and arm/hand actions. Monitoring of operator's arm/hand motion is performed by coupling myoelectric sensors with video data acquisition. Myoelectric signals are used to simplify the problem of understanding motion. In order to retain constraint-free operator's environment, myoelectric sensing is limited to major joints (shoulder and elbow) and signals are used to estimate the location of the operator's hand in sagittal plane. Video data acquisition is used to interpret hand pose. The focus of the paper is on myoelectric data processing and showing that limited sensing of muscular activity simplifies the problem of estimating motion and provides sufficiently accurate estimates to guide video data acquisition. The problem of estimating arm motion is formulated by statistical pattern recognition based on a model that relates the EMG signal sensed at a joint to the angular displacement of the arm/hand.

research in human/computer interaction has mainly focused on natural language, text, speech and vision primarily in isolation. Recently there have been a number of research projects that have concentrated on the integration of such modalities using intelligent reasoners. The rationale is that many inherent ambiguities in single modes of communication can be resolved if extra information is available. This paper describes an intelligent multi-modal system called the Smart Work Manager. The main characteristics of the Smart Work Manager are that it can process speech, text, face images, gaze information and simulated gestures rising the mouse as input modalities, and its output is in the form of speech, text or graphics. The main components of the system are the reasoner, a speech system, a vision system, an integration platform and the application interface. The overall architecture of the system will be described together with the integration platform and the components of the system which include a non-intrusive neural network based gaze-tracking system. The paper concludes with a discussion on the applicability of such systems to intelligent human/computer interaction and lessons learnt in terms of reliability and efficiency.

From 1989 to 1995 he was working as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Power Electronics and Control Engineering University of Stuttgart. His main areas of research during this time were control systems and power electronics for induction machine drives. In 1994 he received his Dr.-Ing. degree for a work on this topic. Operating modern high-speed spindles directly from an inverter often leads to intolerable disadvantages. Equipping the inverter with an LC-output filter avoids these disadvantages bur, on the other hand, drastically increases the system's complexity. Particularly there is no method known yet that combines an operation of high-speed spindles via LC-filter with high-quality motion control. In this paper a new robust method for stator current control is introduced, which makes field-oriented motion control easily applicable to such a system.

Design decision support system for the engineering/re-engineering of complex naval systems

Previous professional employment includes positions at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and General Motors Corporation. He received his master's and doctoral degrees at Purdue University and his bachelor's degree at Rose-Hulman Institute of Ethnology. His research interests include artificial intelligence robotics and paraliel computing. Rammohan K. Ragade:is professor of engineering mathematics and computer science at the University of Louisville. He received his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kampur in 1968. He has been a faculty member at the University of Waterloo and held an engineering position with Bell Northern Research. His research interests include human-computer interaction decision support systems object-oriented simulation and modeling distributed database systems and fuzzy logic. John G. Shea Jr.:served until 1995 as a project manager in the Phalanx Engineering Section of Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division Louisville Station. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Speed Scientific School at the University of Louisville. He was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers.

Hybrid simulation includes both functional computer software models and actual hardware subsystems operating as an integrated whole. A ''hot test bed'' or a ''hybrid simulator-emulator'' enables design engineers to evaluate conceptual models in a more realistic real-lime context, but places increased cognitive demands on the designer. This paper describes an architecture, and results from a prototype implementation, for a design decision support system to allow a designer to make more productive and cost effective use of a test bed system.

The design of structured mathematical models of processes in a certain level of abstraction defined by the given task appears to be difficult and time consuming even for experienced experts. This paper reports on a new method for the design of structured process models based on the metaphor of Genetic Programming. This new methodology allows the automatic generation of non-linear process models in a self-organizing way. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.
