Recommendation systems-based software requirements elicitation process—a systematic literature review

Requirements elicitation is one of the fundamental sub-processes of requirements engineering which is used to find the needs of stakeholders. There are several activities in this sub-process, i.e., identification of stakeholders and their requirements, software requirements prioritization, and analysis. Recommendation systems have been intertwined with the requirements elicitation process to predict the stakeholders’ requirements based on their preferences for functional and non-functional requirements. A number of systematic literature reviews (SLRs) have been carried out in the area of requirements elicitation. These SLRs do not support the applications of the recommendation systems during the requirements elicitation process. To deal with this issue, we present an SLR on recommendation systems-based software requirements elicitation processes, from 2009 to 2022, undertaking four research questions: (a) What are the different activities of the software requirements elicitation methods? (b) What are the applications of recommendation systems in the identification of the software requirements? (c) How the recommendation systems can facilitate the identification of stakeholders in the requirements elicitation process? (d) What are the ways to automate the selection of requirements elicitation techniques? The aim of this study is to identify the research gaps in the area of recommendation systems-based requirements elicitation processes and suggest future research directions. © 2024, The Author(s).

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication networks consist of resource-constrained autonomous devices, also known as autonomous Internet of things (IoTs) or machine-type communication devices (MTCDs) which act as a backbone for Industrial IoT, smart cities, and other autonomous systems. Due to the limited computing and memory capacity, these devices cannot maintain strong security if conventional security methods are applied such as heavy encryption. This article proposed a novel lightweight mutual authentication scheme including elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) driven end-to-end encryption through curve25519 such as (i): efficient end-to-end encrypted communication with pre-calculation strategy using curve25519;and (ii): elliptic curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) based mutual authentication technique through a novel lightweight hash function. The proposed scheme attempts to efficiently counter all known perception layer security threats. Moreover, the pre-calculated key generation strategy resulted in cost-effective encryption with 192-bit curve security. It showed comparative efficiency in key strength, and curve strength compared with similar authentication schemes in terms of computational and memory cost, communication performance and encryption robustness.

The general goal of the research is to reduce loss of productivity, failure and downtime and the percentage of waste in production in the company, which is already committed to and successful in applying standards, raising the quality of service, as well as occupational safety and environmental protection. In this scientific paper a mechatronic subsystem is designed and implemented, as an addition to the hot-stamping production line, which would monitor whether there are present (and whether there are in quantities enough of) each of the three thermoplastic, metallized strips, which line the product - profiled lath. When it is detected and recognized that the tape will soon be used up, the sub-system automatically signals this with turning off heating of the slat and activating a sound alarm, attracting attention of the human operator. The heater switches off automatically if the strip loss has occurred (event driven system), in order to prevent deformation of the slat profile. The subsystem includes automatic monitoring of the remaining amount of tape, alarm notification in case of imminent disappearance of the tape, with the heater turned off and alarming the operator. The human operator then has enough time to replace the tape (approximately five to ten minutes, depending on the product). The research presents that the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) provides a very interesting alternative to classical TCP and UDP, especially in multihoming settings. We therefore specifically sought to test SCTP's performance in multihoming scenarios within 5G networks and compare its reliability to TCP and UDP under various Network Address Translation (NAT) settings through complete simulations. We took care to focus on the important performance metrics of throughput, latency, packet loss, and connection stability. The ability of multihoming with SCTP, where a single SCTP endpoint can support several IP addresses, was also tested. In the context that devices will be able to have more than one network interface, this feature is welcomed in 5G networks. An empirical investigation revealed that in NAT settings, while TCP and UDP see higher packet loss and more delay, SCTP maintains a more reliable connection. The as much as needed ultra-reliable and low-latency communications transport protocol for 5G must be very stable. For example, applications such as online gaming, video conferencing, and major IoT operations will be relying on this new network. This paper has specifically emphasized the potential that SCTP's multihoming feature and improved performance metrics hold for 5G networks. This means that SCTP should be recommended to increase network stability and enhance performance, based on the results presented here that have indicated its great potential. Further research will be done on enhancing SCTP for specific 5G use cases under different deployment scenarios and investigating its integration with promising new technologies like edge computing and network slicing. © 2024 IEEE.

The aim of this paper is to propose a bookshelf scanning mechanism for library inventory, which uses a stepper motor-based linear drive (e.g. slider), controlled by an Arduino board. While exploring different types of slider drives, which could be used in this system, such as linear ball bearing sliders or belt-driven sliders, screw-nut sliders are recommended in here described proposal, because they provide a high level of precision and accuracy. The slider moves a carriage holding a barcode scanner along a sliding track to accurately scan the barcodes of books on a bookshelf. The key components required for the system to function are highlighted, such as a suitable stepper motor driver, an Arduino board with adequate digital input/output pins, and sensors (e.g., limit switches) for detecting the end of the track. The example code is written using Arduino IDE, for controlling the stepper motor. The positioning of the barcode scanner, motor, and sensors is also crucial to ensure the system operates smoothly and accurately. The scanner should be able to read the barcodes of the books accurately and without any errors. In regards to that, the vital role played by Arduino in regulating the slider’s speed and position is pointed out. The importance of proper power supply and wiring to prevent potential issues with the motor and Arduino board, is emphasized. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

With the rapid and unprecedented growth of textual data in recent years, there is a remarkable need for automatic text summarization models to retrieve useful information from these large numbers of textual documents without human intervention within a reasonable time. Text summarization is commonly performed based on extractive and abstractive paradigms. Although different machine learning and deep learning based methods have been proposed for the task of text summarization during the last decades, they are still in their early steps of development and their potential has yet to be fully explored. Accordingly, a new summarization model is proposed in this paper which takes advantage of both extractive and abstractive text summarization models as a single unified model based on the strategy gradient of reinforcement learning. The proposed model also employs the combination of convolutional neural network and gated recurrent unit in both extraction and abstraction modules besides attention mechanism. Moreover, language models, namely Word2Vec and BERT, are used as the backbone of the proposed model to better express sentence semantics as a word vector. We conducted our experiments on widely-studied text summarization datasets (CNN\Daily Mail and DUC-2004) and according to the empirical results, not only the proposed model achieved higher accuracy compared to both extractive and abstractive summarization models in terms of ROUGE metric but also its generated summaries presented higher saliency and readability based on human evaluation. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

In this paper, we have discussed an innovative method for crafting a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D PhC) based Optical Band Pass Filter (OBPF) using a Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. 1D PhC-based OBPF plays a vital role in optical communication systems due to its ability to control light propagation. The proposed technique optimizes the photonic crystal structure to achieve the desired optical bandpass characteristics efficiently. The DE algorithm streamlines the design process and enables fast exploration of the design space. The effectiveness of this approach is validated through simulations and comparisons with the existing well-known methods. The OBPF comprises multiple dielectric layers with varying thicknesses and refractive indices to enable high transmission at specific wavelengths and low transmission elsewhere. The Optimization techniques are employed to adjust the parameters like thickness, refractive index, and number of layers. The DE method, thus, enhances the performance of OBPF. MATLAB implementation showcases significant outcomes with high transmittance (99.9727%), low reflectance (0.0273%), and a narrow Full Width at Half Maximum of 0.5 nm that affirms its efficacy. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Following a pilot project, which concluded in 2016, the replacement of old energy consuming Traffic Light Systems (TLS) of Nicosia Municipality were the subject of an investigation with regards to the energy saving potential and most importantly the payback period of the investment, through presumptions. This paper presents the results obtained of the new efficient technology implementation, with regards to the energy saving that materialised in the Nicosia Municipality. Investigation is presented in an attempt to determine whether the proposed solution and calculated capital employed had the expected energy usage reduction, return on investment, and payback period. The estimated cost benefit of the installed systems compared to the actual benefits varies significantly, after factors such as maintenance and electricity costs are considered. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.
