During the early stages of pre-Contract Definition ship design, the use of computer models now allows the design to be manipulated on a total system basis. That is, a change to any component of the design is immediately and totally reflected in the physical characteristics of the overall ship design. The models that make this possible and the efforts to extend this capability into Concept Development are described. The implications of this for the subsystem designer, in particular the electronics designer, are explored.

We are facing an immense growth of digital data and information resources, both in terms of size, complexity, modalities and intrusiveness. Almost every aspect of our existence is being digitally captured. This is exemplified by the omnipresent existence of all kinds of data storage, far beyond those stored in traditional relational databases. The spectrum of data being digitally stored runs from multimedia data repositories to your purchases in most stores. Every tweet that you broadcast is captured for posterity. Needless to say this situation posses new research opportunities, challenges and problems in the ways we store, manipulate, search, and - in general - make use of such data and information. Attempts to cope with these problems have been emerging all over the world with thousands of people devoted to developing tools and techniques to deal with this new area of research. One of the prominent scholars and researchers in this field was the late Professor Ashley Morris who died suddenly and tragically at a young age. Ashley's career begun in industry, where he specialized in databases.

NAVSHIPS. He holds a BS degree in physics from St. Francis College Loretto Pa. and has taken graduate work in electronic engineering at the University of Delaware and John Hopkins University. Mr. Humm was a physicist at Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland until 1959 when he accepted a position of Project Engineer in the Ship Systems Branch at Naval Ship Research and Development Center Annapolis. Mr. Humm came to the Bureau of Ships Interior Communications Navigation Control and Computer Systems Branch as Project Engineer for submarine systems in Ship Control and Indicating Group then head of the Integrated Ship Systems Group and later head of the Voice Communications Group. He assumed his present position in January 1969.

This paper introduces and develops a new generalized approach to the dynamic simulation of an HVDC power transmission system. The approach involved is a generalized method of mesh analysis applied to the HVDC network. The simulation of HVDC convertors is characterized by the fact that the network to be solved changes with each discontinuity, such as valve firing and end of commutation. To facilitate such an analysis, topology is used and a technique is developed for the automatic selection of the appropriate network by recognizing the state of conducting and nonconducting valves. The method is inherently suitable for following the natural process of convertor operation which may culminate in various faults. To illustrate this method a simple HVDC system consisting of one convertor at each end is considered. Essential features of the program are shown by deriving waveforms of normal operation, commutation failure, four-valve conduction, bypass valve operation, and backfire.
