The aim of this paper is to present a tool that could optimise operation of multi-reservoir systems to provide the inhabitants and industry with enough water during drought periods. Since the multi-reservoir systems may be quite complicated and the water outflow from reservoirs have to be precise, we developed a GPU-accelerated algorithm based on the differential evolution to solve this task. The experimental results show that a twelve optimal average monthly water outflows from reservoir can be obtained within a minute, almost 18 times faster than on a hex-core CPU.

Assignment is a common Linear Programming problem with applications in different sectors. Assignees can be people, machines, vehicles, plants or time slots. Tasks to which people are assigned are very diverse. They may be of study or research;and may involve the long term and orient a career path. It becomes difficult when assigning juniors to colleges. Juniors generally have little knowledge and relatively bad estimates of their capacities. This makes college selection a difficult task. In many cases, students are admitted to colleges based on scores they obtained in a number of subjects in their pre-university education. However, different fields of study require mastering a number of skills that need to be tested in order to confirm the candidates' ability of studying in a discipline and pursuing the corresponding career. This paper contributes a solution to the problem. We propose a framework including a rule based system and a formulation for a fit maximization assignment problem. The framework commences with a system that captures inputs from users to help judge their skills as well as their fit for a potential study assignment of his/her choice. Interviews with faculty members helped identifying skills needed in different fields and designing the skills assessment questions. Second, a rule based system recommends other choices to be tested in order to identify the candidate's best three fits. A linear programming formulation is then proposed with the objective of fit maximization while respecting the institutional capacity constraints. The problem size is reduced because some assignments are prohibited since only three best fits are considered. A prototype for the whole framework was developed. Although a longitudinal evaluation is needed to prove that selection using the system resulted in better graduates, the system based on expert knowledge maximizes the chances of making proper student recruitment decisions.
