The aim of this paper is to present a tool that could optimise operation of multi-reservoir systems to provide the inhabitants and industry with enough water during drought periods. Since the multi-reservoir systems may be quite complicated and the water outflow from reservoirs have to be precise, we developed a GPU-accelerated algorithm based on the differential evolution to solve this task. The experimental results show that a twelve optimal average monthly water outflows from reservoir can be obtained within a minute, almost 18 times faster than on a hex-core CPU.

Models of quantum systems on curved space-times lack sufficient experimental verification. Some speculative theories suggest that quantum properties, such as entanglement, may exhibit entirely different behavior to purely classical systems. By measuring this effect or lack thereof, we can test the hypotheses behind several such models. For instance, as predicted by Ralph and coworkers [T C Ralph, G J Milburn, and T Downes, Phys. Rev. A, 79(2):22121, 2009;T C Ralph and J Pienaar, New Journal of Physics, 16(8):85008, 2014], a bipartite entangled system could decohere if each particle traversed through a different gravitational field gradient. We propose to study this effect in a ground to space uplink scenario. We extend the above theoretical predictions of Ralph and coworkers and discuss the scientific consequences of detecting/failing to detect the predicted gravitational decoherence. We present a detailed mission design of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Space QUEST (Space - Quantum Entanglement Space Test) mission, and study the feasibility of the mission scheme. Assignment is a common Linear Programming problem with applications in different sectors. Assignees can be people, machines, vehicles, plants or time slots. Tasks to which people are assigned are very diverse. They may be of study or research;and may involve the long term and orient a career path. It becomes difficult when assigning juniors to colleges. Juniors generally have little knowledge and relatively bad estimates of their capacities. This makes college selection a difficult task. In many cases, students are admitted to colleges based on scores they obtained in a number of subjects in their pre-university education. However, different fields of study require mastering a number of skills that need to be tested in order to confirm the candidates' ability of studying in a discipline and pursuing the corresponding career. This paper contributes a solution to the problem. We propose a framework including a rule based system and a formulation for a fit maximization assignment problem. The framework commences with a system that captures inputs from users to help judge their skills as well as their fit for a potential study assignment of his/her choice. Interviews with faculty members helped identifying skills needed in different fields and designing the skills assessment questions. Second, a rule based system recommends other choices to be tested in order to identify the candidate's best three fits. A linear programming formulation is then proposed with the objective of fit maximization while respecting the institutional capacity constraints. The problem size is reduced because some assignments are prohibited since only three best fits are considered. A prototype for the whole framework was developed. Although a longitudinal evaluation is needed to prove that selection using the system resulted in better graduates, the system based on expert knowledge maximizes the chances of making proper student recruitment decisions.

In this research, a study of the Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM) model using the Numenta Implementation 'Nupic v1.7' and an investigation of its performance in solving the German traffic sign recognition task using standard benchmark data is conducted. Its performance is compared to that of a state of the art Multi-Column Deep Neural Network (MCDNN) that has been proved to exceed the human recognition accuracy for the same task. © 2014 IEEE.

Online teaching and learning have become increasingly common in higher educational institutions. These higher educational institutions realize the growing importance of online learning in information systems/information technology (IS/IT) education and are now offering online IS/IT courses and programs to students. However, designing, developing, teaching, and assessing an online IS/IT course effectively is often a challenge. Many IS/IT instructors are new to online teaching and need orientation and training for their own readiness in designing, developing, teaching, and assessing IS/IT courses in the online environment. This paper focuses on comments described in Java programs, and conducts an empirical analysis about relationships between comments and fault-proneness in the programs. The types of comments analyzed in this paper are comments described inside a method body (inner comments), and comments followed by a method declaration (documentation comments). Although both of them play important roles in the program comprehension, they seem to be described in different purposes;The inner comments are often added to present tips about code fragments, while the documentation comments usually work as a programmer's manual. In the field of code refactoring, wellwritten inner comments are said to be related to "code smell" since they may cover a lack of readability in a complicated code fragment. This paper analyzes the associations of comments with the code quality from the aspect of fault-proneness, with using four popular open source products. The empirical results show that a method having inner comments tends to be 1.8 - 3.0 times likely to be faulty. The key contribution of this work is to reveal the usefulness of inner comments to point at faulty methods. © 2014 IEEE.
