Threshold concepts can be used to both organize disciplinary knowledge and explain why students have difficulties at certain points in the curriculum. Threshold concepts transform a student's view of the discipline;before being learned, they can block a student's progress. In this paper, we propose that in computing, skills, in addition to concepts, can sometimes be thresholds. Some students report finding skills more difficult than concepts. We discuss some computing skills that may be thresholds and compare threshold skills and threshold concepts. Copyright 2012 ACM.

National portal is one of the main gateways to e-government entry for providing e-services to citizen. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate a set of factors that influence on Malaysian government portal using Multi-Criteria method. These factors were derived from a previous studies and literature related to the subject matter by Malaysian government to enhance rank of government portals and websites. In addition, obtained factors were considered from all Malaysian government portals and in this research based on them the rank of those were evaluated. In this study we also consider those factors to rank them and show which factors is more important for improving Malaysian government portal based on citizen desires. With regard to the citizen's perception of government portal, a questionnaire was structured to gather their responses for raking the factors using TOPSIS method. Therefore, an MCDM supported study for ranking criteria in government portals. The outcome of this paper assists to Malaysian e-government that considers importance of effective factors for government portal in giving better e-services. © 2005 - 2012 JATIT & LLS. Capital market as an organized market has an effective role in mobilizing financial resources due to have growth and economic development of countries and many countries now in the finance firms is responsible for the required credits. In the stock market, shareholders are always seeking the highest efficiency, so the stock price prediction is important for them. Since the stock market is a nonlinear system under conditions of political, economic and psychological, it is difficult to predict the correct stock price. Thus, in the present study artificial intelligence and ARIMA method has been used to predict stock prices. Multilayer Perceptron neural network and radial basis functions are two methods used in this research. Evaluation methods, selection methods and exponential smoothing methods are compared to random walk. The results showed that AI-based methods used in predicting stock performance are more accurate. Between two methods used in artificial intelligence, a method based on radial basis functions is capable to estimate stock prices in the future with higher accuracy. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2012.

The growing use of Internet in Malaysia provides a developing prospect of online shopping for international students. Also, international students are an outstanding group in online shopping in Malaysia. In view of this, in order to improve increase online shopping among international students and Malaysian online shopping, a research framework was proposed and a survey of international student was done. Proposed research framework considers three key dimensions service quality, information quality and system quality for online shopping website. To gather initial data, international students of UTM were asked. Data was collected from 300 international students of UTM. Using normal TOPSIS and fuzzy-TOPSIS approaches all parameters in hierarchy were ranked. Our findings demonstrated that using fuzzy-TOPSIS method trust, response time, reliability, responsiveness, empathy, timeliness, accuracy of information, navigation and accessibility are the nine first important parameters in online website quality. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2012.

The hardware/software implementation of a custom vision board using minimal resources out of a reconfigurable platform is described. Demanding robotic vision applications in most cases require dedicated hardware for reliable operation. The designed system is based on a Cyclone IV Altera FPGA device that constitutes the main processing unit of the reconfigurable hardware and on a 32 -- bit Microchip PIC32 micro controller as a complementary processor. The main goal of this research is to accelerate image processing algorithms using only minimal resources of the custom designed reconfigurable hardware. The micro controller serves peripheral control tasks, relieving valuable resources from the FPGA device. Video images are captured using a CMOS image sensor. USB connectivity with a personal computer is provided using a FIFO-to-USB module. Operational tasks such as frame grabbing, image filtering and USB communication are integrated to the system by implementing custom-designed controllers in VHDL. Image processing functions are accelerated using a fully parallel pipeline which is described analytically. A host computer interface has also been developed in order to test the overall system in action. The system is evaluated in terms of resource usage and the advantages emanating from the proposed architecture are discussed.

We report the observation of Higgs boson decays to WW* based on an excess over background of 6.1 standard deviations in the dilepton final state, where the Standard Model expectation is 5.8 standard deviations. Evidence for the vector-boson fusion (VBF) production process is obtained with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. The results are obtained from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb−1 from s=7 and 8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. For a Higgs boson mass of 125.36 GeV, the ratio of the measured value to the expected value of the total production cross section times branching fraction is 1.09−0.15+0.16(stat)−0.14+0.17(syst). The corresponding ratios for the gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion production mechanisms are 1.02±0.19(stat)−0.18+0.22(syst) and 1.27−0.40+0.44(stat)−0.21+0.30(syst), respectively. At s=8 TeV, the total production cross sections are measured to be σ(gg→H→WW*)=4.6±0.9(stat)−0.7+0.8(syst) pb and σ(VBF H→WW*)=0.51−0.15+0.17(stat)−0.08+0.13(syst) pb. The fiducial cross section is determined for the gluon-fusion process in exclusive final states with zero or one associated jet.

The transverse polarization of Λ and Λ¯ hyperons produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is measured. The analysis uses 760 μb−1 of minimum bias data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the year 2010. The measured transverse polarization averaged over Feynman xF from 5×10−5 to 0.01 and transverse momentum pT from 0.8 to 15 GeV is −0.010±0.005(stat)±0.004(syst) for Λ and 0.002±0.006(stat)±0.004(syst) for Λ¯. It is also measured as a function of xF and pT, but no significant dependence on these variables is observed. Prior to this measurement, the polarization was measured at fixed-target experiments with center-of-mass energies up to about 40 GeV. The ATLAS results are compatible with the extrapolation of a fit from previous measurements to the xF range covered by this measurement.

Service Specific Overlay Networks have recently attracted a great interest, and have been extensively investigated in the context of multimedia delivery over the internet. they are virtual networks constructed on top of the underlying network and they have been proposed to provide and improve services not provided by other traditional networks to the end users. The increased complexity and heterogeneity of these networks in addition to ever changing conditions in the network and the different types of faults that may occur make their control and management by human administrators more difficult. Therefore, self-healing concept was introduced to handle these changes and to assure highly reliable and dependable network system performance. Self-healing aims at ensuring that the service will continue to work regardless of defects that might occur in the network. This paper introduce literature in the area of self-healing overlay networks, present their basic concepts, requirements, and architectures. In addition to that we present a proposed self-healing architecture for multimedia delivery services. Our proposed solution is oriented to discover new approaches for monitoring, diagnosing, and recovering of services thus achieving self-healing.

In this work we build the first BI-RADS parser for Portuguese free texts, modeled after existing approaches to extract BI-RADS features from English medical records. Our concept finder uses a semantic grammar based on the BI-RADS lexicon and on iterative transferred expert knowledge. We compare the performance of our algorithm to manual annotation by a specialist in mammography. Our results show that our parser's performance is comparable to the manual method. © 2012 IEEE.
