Power dissipation and reliability are two major challenges when designing gates and circuits using nanoscale devices. This paper proposes a novel approach for the design of CMOS logic gates which aims to simultaneously decrease their power consumption and their probabilities of failure. This new sizing method was evaluated on CMOS inverters and NOR-2 gates at three technology nodes: 16nm, 22nm, and 32nm. The new inverters and NOR-2 were compared to the classic gates. The results show that the new gates have significantly lower power and higher reliability when compared to classic CMOS gates. The results also suggest that the advantages of the new design method are enhanced at smaller feature sizes: at 16nm the new gates outperform the classic ones in reliability, power, and PDP. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a search for a new heavy particle produced in association with a top or antitop quark. Two models in which the new heavy particle is a color singlet or a color triplet are considered, decaying, respectively, to t¯q or tq, leading to a resonance within the tt¯+jets signature. The full 2011 ATLAS pp collision data set from the LHC (4.7 fb−1) is used to search for tt¯ events produced in association with jets, in which one of the W bosons from the top quarks decays leptonically and the other decays hadronically. The data are consistent with the Standard Model expectation, and a new particle with mass below 430 Gev for both W′ boson and color triplet models is excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming unit right-handed coupling.

This paper reports on experience with modifications to National University's "Wireless engineering Software" and "Radio systems Modeling" courses to enable students to gain experience in wireless communications engineering through designing, building and then using simulation games for network design and radio design. Game design has been incorporated as a primary learning tool into these courses in the Master of Science in Wireless Communications degree program. Laboratory experiments and simulations are already used in some engineering curricula. The introduction of interactive simulation games in virtual environments goes a step further. The games simulate real world engineering dynamics and improve retention of complex concepts. Furthermore, the depth of learning increases as the students design and build the games, instead of just playing them. The processes and principles of game design have been adapted from National University's School of Media and Communications (SOMC). SOMC currently uses this approach to successfully teach game design in its digital entertainment and interactive arts program, with the core objective of creating "playcentric" video games. To expand this process to engineering courses, faculty from SOMC and the School of engineering and technology (SOET), collaborated to combine engineering processes with game design techniques to teach interactive games for designing a cellular communications network and digital radio design to engineering students. Game rules, built by the students, must incorporate principles of mathematics, physics, and engineering, including the dynamics of wave propagation, binary logic, and the architecture of wireless systems. Students become game designers as they create original games including content from the STEM (Science, technology, engineering and Math) curriculum. This process makes students more effective system designers by bridging experience to the real world. Teams of students design and build the game

Lack of spoken and written training data is one o f the main issues encountered by Arabic automatic speech recognition (ASR) researchers. Almost all written and spoken corpora are not readily available to the public and many of them can only be obtained by purchasing from the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) or the European Language Resource Association (ELRA). There is more shortage of spoken training data as compared to written training data resulting in a great need for more speech corpora in order to serve different domains of Arabic ASR. The available spoken corpora were mainly collected from broadcast news (radios and televisions), and telephone conversations having certain technical and quality shortcomings. In order to produce a robust speaker-independent continuous automatic Arabic speech recognizer, a set of speech recordings that are rich and balanced is required. The rich characteristic is in the sense that it must contain all the phonemes of Arabic language. It must be balanced in preserving the phonetics distribution of Arabic language too. This set of speech recordings must be based on a proper written set of sentences and phrases created by experts. Therefore, it is crucial to create a high quality written (text) set of the sentences and phrases before recording them. This work adds a new kind of possible speech data for Arabic language based text and speech applications besides other kinds such as broadcast news and telephone conversations. Therefore, this work is an invitation to all Arabic ASR developers and research groups to explore and capitalize.

The paper introduces a confidential region proposed by T. Yamazaki et al., which is equipped with the equivalent dipole source localization software; SinaPointPro (NEC Corporation). This confidence limit is defined on a direction of the radius. This method enables to detect the origin of the epilepsy. And also the paper treats a series of its applications by the present author. The author and his collaborators have recorded electroencephalograms (EEGs) from subjects viewing four types of Kanji and arrows representing directional meaning. Subjects were asked to read them silently. The equivalent current dipole source localization (ECDL) method has been applied to these event related potentials: averaged EEGs. ECDs were localized to the right and left frontal lobes at latency after 500ms in both cases. Polarities of ERPs were also opposite in the case of opposite directions, and the moments of localized ECDs at these latencies were opposite. Pathways of ECDs in silent reading are almost the same in cases of Kanji and arrow. In these cases, no ECD was localized to the Wernike's area and the angler gyrus those are related to the auditory language area, however, ECDs were localized to the Broca's area that is said to be the language area for speech.

The performance of three different Entity-Attribute-Value (EAV) storage formats for Clinical Data Repositories (CDRs) is compared with regards to querying millions of data points from clinical sources to assess the amount of storage space the data use, the speed with which the data can be obtained, and the complexity of the queries required to retrieve the data. Performance results are presented that show that the hybrid EAV approach provides a nice balance of the simple and multi-data type formats. ©2010 IEEE.

With the significant role that warehouse plays in connection to suppliers, distributors, and clients, and considering the costliness of storage systems, efforts have focused on the reduction of procedural expenses. Among the most significant expenses, one involves the distance traveled by operators or S/R machinery for the selection of ordered items; the common solution to which has been through the classification of stored items. Previous articles have focused on linear solutions to the abovementioned problem, such as P-Median. This article shall focus on the problems arising from the said solution, and instead a non-linear method proposed. Further, a heuristic algorithm is produced for the solution that will be compared to similar solutions through Lingo, proving acceptable results.

This paper reports application results of Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) for a practical problem. In this paper, a reentrant scheduling problem is considered as a practical problem which has been addressed by our previous works. MCTS introduced by Coulom is a best-first search where the pseudorandom simulations guide the solution of problem. Recent improvements on MCTS have produced strong computer Go program, which has a large search space, and the success is a hot topic for selecting the best move. So far, most of reports about MCTS have been on two-player game, and MCTS has been applied rarely in one-player perfect-information games. MCTS does not need an admissible heuristic, so the application of MCTS for one-player games might be an interesting alternative. Additionally, one-player games like puzzles are determinately operated only by one player's decision, so sequences of changes in state are describable as a network diagram of interdependence of operations. Therefore if MCTS for one-player games is considered as a meta-heuristic algorithm, we can use this algorithm for not only many practical problems, but also combinatorial optimization problems. Especially as MCTS does not fully depend on evaluation function, so the solutions based on MCTS remain effective if objective function of problem is modified. This paper firstly investigated on the application of Single Player MCTS (SP-MCTS) introduced by Schadd et al. Next this paper showed the effectiveness of new simulation strategies on SP-MCTS by numerical experiments. Based on the results, this paper discussed the application potentiality of SP-MCTS for a practical reentrant scheduling problem.

This paper reports the design, implementation, and evaluation of a research work for developing a high performance natural speaker-independent Arabic continuous speech recognition system. It aims to explore the usefulness and success of a newly developed speech corpus, which is phonetically rich and balanced, presenting a competitive approach towards the development of an Arabic ASR system as compared to the state-of-the-art Arabic ASR researches. The developed Arabic AS R mainly used the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Sphinx tools together with the Cambridge HTK tools. To extract features from speech signals, Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) technique was applied producing a set of feature vectors. Subsequently, the system uses five-state Hidden Markov Models (HMM) with three emitting states for tri-phone acoustic modeling. The emission probability distribution of the states was best using continuous density 16 Gaussian mixture distributions. The state distributions were tied to 500 senons. The language model contains uni-grams, bi-grams, and tri-grams. The system was trained on 7.0 hours of phonetically rich and balanced Arabic speech corpus and tested on another one hour. For similar speakers but different sentences, the system obtained a word recognition accuracy of 92.67% and 93.88% and a Word Error Rate (WER) of 11.27% and 10.07% with and without diacritical marks respectively. For different speakers but similar sentences, the system obtained a word recognition accuracy of 95.92% and 96.29% and a Word Error Rate (WER) of 5.78% and 5.45% with and without diacritical marks respectively. Whereas different speakers and different sentences, the system obtained a word recognition accuracy of 89.08% and 90.23% and a Word Error Rate (WER) of 15.59% and 14.44% with and without diacritical marks respectively.

In this paper, a method for hand posture recognition, which is robust for hand posture changing in an actual environment, is proposed. Conventionally, a data glove device and a 3D scanner have been used for the feature extraction of hand shape. However, the performance of each approach is affeected by hand posture changing. Therefore, this paper proposes the posture fluctuation model for efficient hand posture recognition, based on 3D hand shape and color feature obtained from a stereo camera. A large set of dictionary for posture recognition is built by various leaned hand images which were auto-created from one scanned hand image, based on plural proposed models. In order to show the effectiveness of proposed method, performance and processing times for posture recognition are compared to conventional method. In addition, we perform the evaluation experiment by using the Japanese sign language. © 2010 IEEE.
