In the last decade, the effect of Internet usage in education is gradually increased. When we look from academic perspective, the new technologies provided alternatives for students learning. As distance education becomes important everyday, the indispensable elements of teaching and education, laboratories must be reachable via remote connection. Consequently, the education that is going to be given to the students will be more flexible with respect to place and time constraints and students can reach laboratory facilities at any time and anywhere not only in lectures and practical hours. In this study, European remote radio laboratory (ERRL) which is a distance remote radio frequency (RF) laboratory designed for electrical-electronics students, is described generally. The software architecture, infrastructure and experiment that can be done with a remote connection have been described.

In this panel, we propose to figure out how requirements engineering and interaction design can be usefully combined. In particular, some people argue that scenarios/ use cases should be concrete, as in story-telling. Others argue for use of "essential" use cases as a methodological approach to interaction and user-interface design. Somewhat in the middle, it is argued that use cases should help acquiring the requirements in the first place. What should the practitioner believe and, in particular, do, in order to develop useful and usable software and systems? Software development and interaction design require different skills and different methods and are typically done by different people. Still, scenario-based design is proposed for several activities relevant for both tasks, such as requirements elicitation, software design, and interaction design. Symbolic modeling in this spirit is actually common to various fields. However, scenario-based approaches vary, especially with regard to their use, e.g., employing abstract use cases or integrating scenarios with functions and goals in a systematic design process. So, the key issue to be raised at the panel is how to combine different approaches, e.g., in scenario-based development, so that the interaction design as well as the development of the user interface and of the software internally result in an overall useful and useable system.

It is well known that speech production and perception process is inherently bimodal consisting of audio and visual components. Recently there has been increased interest in using the visual modality in combination with the acoustic modality for improved speech processing. This field of study has gained the title of audio-visual speech processing. Lip movement recognition, also known as lip reading, is a communication skill which involves the interpretation of lip movements in order to estimate some important parameters of the lips that include, but not limited to, size, shape and orientation. In this paper, we represent a hybrid framework for lip reading which is based on both audio and visual speech parameters extracted from a video stream of isolated spoken words. The proposed algorithm is self-tuned in the sense that it starts with an estimations of speech parameters based on visual lip features and then the coefficients of the algorithm are fine-tuned based on the extracted audio parameters. In the audio speech processing part, extracted audio features are used to generate a vector containing information of the speech phonemes. These information are used later to enhance the recognition and matching process. For lip feature extraction, we use a modified version of the method used by F. Huang and T. Chen for tracking of multiple faces. This method is based on statistical color modeling and the deformable template. The experiments based on the proposed framework showed interesting results in recognition of isolated words.

Lung cancer is one of the most lethal form of cancer worldwide. The tumor present in the lungs is not static and changes its shape and position during each breathing cycle. In order to segment the tumor, the physicians manually outline the tumor on each slice. Slice by slice manual segmentation is prone to errors and causes physician fatigue. A semi-automatic method to segment and track the tumor in all the frames of PET data is proposed in this paper. The tumor is segmented from each slice of the first frame using wavelet features and support vector machine classifier. This segmented tumor, after validated by the experts is used in initialization of the contour for segmentation of the tumor in subsequent frames by the level set method. Another important contribution of this paper is setting up tumor volume obtained from the first frame as the termination condition for the level set method. The results obtained from the proposed methodology are very promising and eliminates the need for manual tumor segmentation. Our proposed technique also maintains consistent segmentation and the results obtained are not dependent on the operator as is the case in manual segmentation.

DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) is the planned Japanese space gravitational wave antenna, aiming to detect gravitational waves from astrophysically and cosmologically significant sources mainly between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz and thus to open a new window for gravitational wave astronomy and for the universe. DECIGO will consist of three drag-free spacecraft, 1000 km apart from each other, whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry-Perot interferometer. We plan to launch DECIGO in middle of 2020s, after sequence of two precursor satellite missions, DECIGO pathfinder and Pre-DECIGO, for technology demonstration required to realize DECIGO and hopefully for detection of gravitational waves from our galaxy or nearby galaxies. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The right to use patient data in treatment is based on the conditions of a need to know and patient consent. In electronic health records, these two conditions can be applied in various ways. We study the handling of consent in two Norwegian hospitals, with a view to how access control and consent handling can be integrated across electronic systems that process patient data. A workshop was held, where two consent handling scenarios were simulated, one in-hospital, the other external. Activities were identified and tied to roles and to the documents and systems used. Electronic systems were found to support the execution of the scenarios to some extent. The electronic functions used in-hospital were consent storage and logging of access;access control was not sufficient. When sharing information externally, the typical approach is a declaration signed by the patient or a referral;such external information sharing should be supported by specific functionality. A first step towards integrated access control is integrated consent handling. © 2007 The authors. All rights reserved.

We are currently developing an autonomous robot that can work in human living environments and that can carry out users' basic instructions. When such a robot moves and works in a human living space, the robot should be able to recognize elements of its environment. Thus, we are engaged in research aimed at the acquisition of a sense of distance from based on image information, utilizing sight information and not necessitating remodeling of the human living space. We give our robot a "finite space map." This map contains information describing a floor plan including obstacles (desk and sofa, etc.), and the robot's position. The robot searches for a route based on the finite space map, and moves along that route. However, numerous obstacles that would disturb the movement of the robot can exist in a human living environment;in addition, these objects are often unknown to the robot. The robot thus needs a system to recognize unknown obstacles not provided by the finite space map beforehand. Thus, we developed an obstacle recognition system that discovers detects obstacles, and detects determines the distance to the obstacle and obtains three-dimensional data describing the obstacle. ©ISAROB 2007.
