Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain and the SOLO taxonomy are being increasingly widely used in the design and assessment of courses, but there are some drawbacks to their use in computer science. This paper reviews the literature on educational taxonomies and their use in computer science education, identifies some of the problems that arise, proposes a new taxonomy and discusses how this can be used in application-oriented courses such as programming.

Noise due to the sensor and the electronics of a camera is an undesirable issue in any machine vision application. Such noise tends to corrupt images and to obstruct any further analysis. An algorithm to detect and cancel such noise, using statistical methods, is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm is an adaptive mean filter, which filters out image regions that are found to be noise corrupted. The efficiency of the proposed filter was examined both qualitatively and quantitatively, by software simulation in several noisy conditions. The main advantage of the filter in hand is that it is appropriate for hardware implementation and can be easily incorporated to smart cameras. The hardware implementation of the filter is also presented in this paper. This implementation aims at time critical applications such as machine vision, inspection and visual surveillance. © 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, LLC.

In an e-commerce interaction carried out in a Peer-to-Peer environment it is rational for the trusting peer to analyze the Risk that could be involved in dealing with a trusted peer as there is a lack of central management in these type of interactions. Risk analysis can be done by assimilating recommendations from other peers if there is no previous interaction history between the trusting peer and the trusted peer. But the assimilated recommendations might be according to the criteria of the recommending peer with the trusted peer, and it is not necessary for the trusting peer to have the same criteria in its interaction with the trusted peer as that of the recommending peer even thought it is interacting in the same context. Further it might interact in a different time as that of the recommending peer. The Risk that was present in a particular context and at a particular time might not be the same at a different time. Hence in this paper we discuss the process of the trusting peer assimilating the recommendations from the recommending peers according to the context, criteria and time of its interaction in order to determine the Riskiness value of the trusted peer, which would help it considerably in decision making. © 2006 IEEE.

The Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) wave is very important for the design of frequency and voltage adjustable DC to AC inverters. Currently, SPWM waves are usually generated through the pulse width modulation (PWM) pins of a singer-chip microcomputer or digital signal processor (DSP). In order to achieve desired SPWM waves and know them better, it is essential to analyze their harmonic components. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to the harmonic analysis of SPWM waves based on Discrete Fourier Series (DFS) and the area equivalent principle. The developed method is convenient and the results of simulation and experiments are more accurate compared to conventional methods. The advantages of our approach are confirmed by the simulation and experimental results. ©2006 IEEE.

Using the processing power of multi-gigahertz general purpose processors (GPP) to perform radio functions can be a better and economical option to design a software defined radio (SDR) system. An efficient SDR system with multiple protocol support can be designed by identifying different blocks in the channel processing stream of different wireless protocols that can be mapped on GPP and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) processing platforms depending on throughput requirements of the corresponding protocol. This paper presents the ongoing research work in designing a novel architecture to prototype and develop efficient SDR systems using GPP as main digital signal processing (DSP) platform along with FPGAs to perform realtime signal processing tasks that can not be handled by GPPs. In this research project, a software defined radio is designed for the physical layer of WLAN standard IEEE 802.11a receiver. Different sub-systems of the channel processing stream of IEEE 802.11a OFDM receiver are mapped on GPP of a PC and a PCI board containing fast ADCs to receive the received analog signal from the RF front-end. The software radio architecture discussed in this paper is a scaled down version of the software radio that has to be developed as the research project for M. Engg. by research at NED University by the principal author.

One-dimensional cutting stock problem (1D-CSP) is one of the representative combinatorial optimization problems which arises in many industrial applications. Since the setup costs for switching different cutting patterns become more dominant in recent cutting industry we consider a variant of 1D-CSP called the pattern restricted problem (PRP) to minimize the number of stock rolls while constraining the number of different cutting patterns within a bound given by users. For this problem we propose a local search algorithm that alternately uses two types of local search processes with the 1-add neighborhood and the shift neighborhood respectively. To improve the performance of local search we incorporate it with linear programming (LP) techniques to reduce the number of solutions in each neighborhood. A sensitivity analysis technique is introduced to solve a large number of associated LP problems quickly. Through computational experiments we observe that the new algorithm obtains solutions of better quality than those obtained by other existing approaches. © Springer 2006.

This paper proposes the method detecting and tracking ships using navigational image sequence taken by the camera installed at ship's bridge. Since an image is influenced by roll and pitch, general image processing technique, such as Background Difference method cannot be applied. Moreover in a navigational image, the sea wave appears as noise. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to eliminate the influence of roll, pitch and sea waves in an image. And we tracked moving ships through navigational image sequence. The image is divided into small regions using brightness value, and these regions are labeled. Each of these regions is considered as a template. The template is assumed to be a ship. Then the template is matched on frames after selected time from an original image. During matching process, the coordinate points are recorded on an Excel table. The moving vector of a region is calculated on an Excel table. We distinguish ships from the character of a moving vector. The detected regions of ships are tagged. Each of the tagged regions is considered as a template and matched on frames after selected time. At this time, the template is replaced by new region to take measures against the change of illumination. The detection processes is started at a suitable interval to prepare for the appearance of another ships. Disappearances of ships are decided by the degree of coincidence of matching. This is the measure to against an occlusion or a frame out of ships. Twelve hours duration of video image have been taken in Tokyo Bay and Tokyo Port, and have been processed by proposal method. It is necessary to extract ship's regions precisely for exact tracking. For that, it is necessary to raise accuracy of extraction. We tried some method to enhance the accuracy of extraction and to prevent incorrect extraction. The result of an effective of measure has described in this paper. The video image that has been taken at Uraga Traffic Route captured several ships. Our

We present novel ideas for facial shape and skin simulation on extremely detailed three-dimensional facial meshes. Our input database is composed of a small number of scanned human faces with resolutions up to several million triangles, where even the pores are clearly distinguished. We show how to decompose the facial meshes into the global shape of the face plus skin detail (3D skin), and then to reconstitute them. Our modeling methodology allows us to simulate the exaggeration of the facial global shape, retaining the original skin detail, as well as to transfer 3D skin from one face to another. First, we represent all the input faces in terms of a homogeneous structure on the base model in low resolution by using mesh adaptation techniques. Second, the differences between the original mesh and a base mesh, which appear as skin detail, are captured and stored, so that each face is decomposed into the global shape (a base mesh) plus skin detail. Face reconstitution after global shape exaggeration and/or skin transfer enables delicate simulation of facial models. In addition, we can increase the resolution of any model scanned at a low resolution by transferring skin from a higher resolution model. Our method shows successful manipulation of the minute structure of 3D skin differently from other methods such as Normal Mapping, Displacement Mapping, Displaced Subdivision Surfaces, and Normal Meshes where none of these techniques show manipulation of minute structure like ours and only approximation is used while our method recovers the original structure.
