New developments in computer networks and communications provide new possibilities for control purposes. Control systems for highly complex plants are themselves very complex and heterogeneous. A new software infrastructure is needed that exploits these new emerging software technologies. An essential activity to be pursued is that of education and of including new technology in control education. A nonlinear optimization-based identification procedure for fully parameterized multivariable state-space models is presented. The method can be used to identify linear time-invariant, linear parameter-varying, composite local linear, bilinear. Hammerstein and Wiener systems. The nonuniqueness of the full parameterization is dealt with by a projected gradient search to solve the nonlinear optimization problem. Both white and nonwhite measurement noise at the output can be dealt with in a maximum likelihood setting. It is proposed to use subspace identification methods to initialize the nonlinear optimization problem. A computationally efficient and numerically reliable implementation of the procedure is discussed in detail.

The analysis of linked faults has proven to be a source for new memory tests, characterized by an increased fault coverage. The paper gives a set of five new tests to target all possible linked faults. The tests are merged into a single test, March SL, detecting all faults in the linked fault space. The preliminary test results of an experiment done at Intel are reported; they show that March SL scores high and detects some unique faults.

This paper improves upon the state of the art in testing word oriented memories. It first presents a complete set of fault models for intra-word coupling faults. Then, it establishes the data background sequence (DBS) for each intra-word coupling fault. These DBSs will be compiled into a (1 + 28 * [log/sub 2/B]) * n/B test with complete fault coverage of the target faults, where n is the size of the memory and B the word size. The test length can be reduced to 29 * n/B when the intra-word faults are restricted to physical adjacent cells within a word.

New memory technologies and processes introduce new defects that cause previously unknown faults. Dynamic faults are among these new faults; they can take place in the absence of the traditional static faults. This paper describes the concept of dynamic faults, based on the fault primitive concept. It further shows, based on industrial test results, the importance of such faults for the new memory technologies, and introduces a systematic way for modeling them. It concludes that current and future SRAM products need to consider testability for dynamic faults or leave substantial DPM on the table, and it sets a direction for further research.

In this paper, we deal with an extended class of flexible shop scheduling problems, and consider a solution under the condition in which information on jobs to be processed may not be given beforehand, i.e., under the framework of real-time scheduling. To realize a solution, we apply such a method where jobs are to be dispatched by applying a set of rules (rule-set), and propose an approach in which a rule-set is generated and improved by using the genetics-based machine learning technique. Through some computational experiments, the effectiveness and the potential of the proposed approach are investigated.
