In the Netherlands central softening of drinking water is mainly carried out with pellet reactors. The process is efficient and functions satisfactorily. However, actual operational conditions can be improved and corrective maintenance can be diminished. In the present paper an overview of troubles is given and the approach to tackle them is described, resulting in proposals for optimal operation of the pellet softening process. The main constraints in actual operation are related to the interpretation of the measurement signals, the flow regulation over the reactors and the occurrence of troubles in the reactors such as the formation of a "disturbed bed layer" and irregularities in the bed. Reaching optimal operation of the processes is very difficult through manual control. Modelling pellet softening will lead to a changed common practice and optimised operation. © 2006 American Water Works Association Inorganics Workshop All Rights Reserved.

A project to develop a small-scale test rocket engine, termed Pilot Engine, which aims at high reliability and high operability, is in progress. The purpose of this program is to demonstrate technical aspects such as integrated design methodology for highly reliable rocket engines, operation limit testing, and advanced engine simulation technology in a short period of time so as to make the most of the mobility of small size. The concept design has been finished for the 31kN Pilot Engine.

This modeling study investigates the functional role of pacemaker neurons in generating stable rhythms in the pre-Botzinger complex, a subcircuit of the respiratory pattern-generating circuitry in mammals. While the presence of pacemakers within the network is without doubt, the percentage and significance of such pacemakers is still unresolved. Here we revisited earlier network simulations by varying the fraction of pacemaker and non-pacemaker neurons within the network, and quantifying the robustness of the input parameter space and range of frequencies output by the network. Stable network rhythms were possible even with no pacemakers. However, we found that a network of at least 50% pacemakers produced the greatest range of output frequencies and had the more robust input space

A method is proposed for the suppression of the sway of rotary crane payloads. The proposed method is based just on the preprocessing of all the commanded crane inputs by a properly designed FIR filter. A four-Degrees-Of- Freedom (4-DOF) model for the rotary crane system is considered, incorporating both the hoisting and the slewing motions, and is thus able to handle also cases where hoisting can be simultaneously applied to the rotary motion. Although the resulting dynamic system is strongly non-linear and time varying, the method is shown to effectively suppress in a quite robust, time and energy efficient way, both the transient as well as the residual sway of the payload. Moreover, additional advantages of the proposed method are that no dynamic modeling of the crane is required, and that the applicability of the method is quite easy and general, without the necessity of any additional instrumentation and control equipment.

Vibration response of rotating machines is typically mixed and corrupted by a variety of interfering sources and noise, leading to the necessity for the isolation of the useful signal components. A relevant frequently encountered industrial case is the need for the separation of the vibration responses of the same type of bearings inside the same machine. For this purpose, a Blind Source Separation procedure has been successfully applied, based on the maximization of the information transferred in a neural network structure. Thus, a key element for the success of the proposed procedure is the non-linear function used in this single layer Neural Network structure. For this reason, since the vibration response of defective rolling element bearings is characterized by signals with super-Gaussian distributions, a flexible form of this function is used in this paper. The results from an experimental test rig indicate that the performance of the method is insensitive to the form of this function.

A new method for sway suppression of boom crane loads is implemented, which is based on the application of appropriate filters on the motion commands. A typical boom crane mechanism is considered, which accomplishes independently the luffing and hoisting motions, needed for load grabbing, transfer and final positioning. The resulting dynamic model of the crane mechanism leads to a strongly non-linear and time varying problem. Properly designed Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters are then applied to the typical motion commands of the system. The resulting filtered motion commands are shown to effectively suppress the payload sway during and after the motion of the mechanism, leading to a minimization of the operating cycle of the crane. Additionally, due to the smooth nature of the resulting motion, decreased stresses result on the crane structure and the motion components, and thus, the life cycle of the equipment can be extended. Natural Resources Canada makes its GPS Corrections (GPS·C) available in real-time through the Canada-wide Differential GPS Service. These corrections have also recently become available over the Internet using prototype UDP and TCP servers. The latter uses the NTRIP model of data transfer to allow, in part, for the creation of Virtual Reference Stations and the production of RTCM-SC104 local-area corrections for Differential GPS. In addition, both servers provide high-precision wide-area corrections in a modified RTCA-SC159 format to provide the necessary precision to eventually realize real-time Precise Point Positioning (PPP) to the sub-decimetre level. Obtaining the highest possible accuracy from GPS corrections requires an awareness of the clock reference, or datum, to which they refer. The pseudorange measurements selected for the correction computation determine the clock reference for those corrections. The GPS·C corrections are currently referenced to the C/A (C1) and P2′ (C1+P2-P1) pseudorange observables and users must match these to achieve the best possible accuracy. Failure to do so can degrade positioning precision by up to a factor of three or more.

An RMCS (reactor manual control system) and RPIS (rod position information system), which are next-gene ration products, were developed to assist in stable operation of existing BWR (boiling water reactor) plants. Installation tests of these systems were completed at The Tokyo Electric Power Company Incorporated, Kashiwazaki Kariwa Nuclear Power Station Unit 4, and The Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc., Shimane Nuclear Power Station Unit 2. The new systems started operation at both of plants in June 2005. The basic concept of these systems is to improve performance [avoidance of LCO (limiting condition of operation)] by maintaining compatibility with existing facilities and by utilizing the functions of a redundant decentralized system. It is a system that monitors the positions of control rods while operating them manually in the BWR plants. A soft logic method was created by adopting the latest controller and optical data transmissions that use the latest IC (CMOS: complementary metal-oxide semiconductor). This method is used in place of the logic method, which uses IC technology (TTL: transistor-transistor logic).
