Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

We consider a networked control system consisting of a physical plant, an actuator, a sensor, and a controller that is connected to the actuator and sensor via a communication network. The plant is described by a linear discrete-time system subject to additive disturbances. In order to reduce the required number of communications in the system, we propose a robust self-triggered model predictive controller based on rollout techniques that robustly asymptotically stabilizes a certain periodic sequence of sets in the state space while guaranteeing robust satisfaction of hard state and input constraints. At periodically occurring scheduling times, the self-triggered model predictive control algorithm determines the times at which the control input and plant measurement are updated in the time span until the next scheduling time. We establish a certain upper bound on the average sampling rate in the closed-loop system. Moreover, we show how increasing the asymptotic bound on the system state, which is a design parameter in the control scheme, can be used to further reduce the average number of communications in the system. © 2015, IF AC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. In this paper the control of a platoon with a nonlinear controller under event-triggered communication is investigated. The proposed nonlinear controller is a predecessor-following controller for a certain class of nonlinear functions. For the event-triggered communication scheme every agent decides based on its own state when it transmits its state information. Therefore, a trigger rule is designed that guarantees exponential convergence of the state error while it excludes Zeno behavior. The results are extended to allow heterogeneous trigger rules under certain conditions. Furthermore the case of heterogeneous controllers is analyzed and exponential convergence and exclusion of Zeno behavior is still guaranteed. Imaging and manipulating objects down to the molecular level plays a crucial role in many disciplines. It allows to unravel molecular phenomena, to form materials with new chemical and physical properties, or to build objects on an atomic scale. Science on the nanoscale is inherently interdisciplinary. It requires knowledge and insight into many fields, spanning from modeling, measuring, imaging, actuation to control. Often feedback control facilitates operation with molecular precision, despite the fact that many physical phenomena at the molecular level are still not well understood, and that stochastic and nonlinear effects are inherently present. This work provides an insight into some of the current control related research activities on a molecular scale. This is done considering examples from different fields: control related to scanning probe microscopy such as atomic force microscopy, controlled self assembly on a molecular scale, control aspects of molecular transport, and the use of control for manipulation of single molecules using macroscopic probe tips. The hope is that control related researchers, who are not experts in these fields, become aware of the opportunities present, which could also drive new theoretical developments.

Nonlinear Model Predictive control (NMPC) employs a plant model to compute a sequence of optimal control inputs for a finite horizon. As, in reality, there always exists a plant-model mismatch and not all states of the plant can be measured, the NMPC scheme must be robust to plant uncertainties and to estimation errors. Different robust NMPC strategies have been proposed to deal with these uncertainties. Among them, a multi-stage NMPC, which is based upon a scenario tree of future plant evolutions, is less conservative compared to worst-case open-loop approaches because the presence of feedback at future sampling instants is explicitly considered. In multi-stage output feedback NMPC, additional scenarios are created by sampling the innovations that are used to estimate the future states of the plant along the scenario tree. In this paper, we refine our previously published approach to include state estimation errors. Moreover we extend the scheme to guarantee robust constraint satisfaction by calculating reachable sets using Taylor models. Vanadium self-powered neutron detectors (VSPNDs) have been proposed to be used in the Advanced Heavy Water Reactor for flux mapping purposes. However, response of VSPNDs to neutron flux variations is slow, and they might also develop faults. This paper proposes a hybrid scheme for state estimation based on the Kalman filtering approach and fault detection, diagnosis, and correction based on the generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) method for VSPNDs. The Kalman filter estimates prompt neutron flux variations from the delayed signal of VSPND, while the GLR method analyzes the innovations to detect fault in VSPND. Subsequently, the scheme also corrects for the step changes in the measurement emanating from fault in VSPND. Performance of the proposed hybrid scheme has been evaluated from simulation of neutron flux variations occurring due to simultaneous movement of regulating rods and demand power variations. It is shown that the magnitude and time of occurrence of step change in signal due to the fault are effectively estimated, and thus the step change can be corrected online. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

This contribution presents a novel approach for efficient online planning of topologically distinctive mobile robot trajectories. Trajectory optimization deforms an initial coarse path drafted by a global planner with respect to robot motion related objectives and constraints. The primary objective is to reach a goal state in minimal time on a collision free path that adheres to the kinematic and dynamic constraints of the mobile robot. Conventional local planners get often stuck in a local optimal trajectory as they are unable to transit across obstacles. Our approach seeks the globally optimal trajectory as it maintains and optimizes a subset of admissible candidate trajectories of distinctive topologies in parallel. In case of dynamic environments the planner switches to the current globally optimal trajectory among the candidate set. The online trajectory planning with timed elastic bands is tightly integrated with the robot motion feedback control. The comparative analysis with conventional local planners confirms the advantages of maintaining distinctive topologies to circumnavigate dynamic obstacles.

Despite its significance in nonlinear controller design, the verification of the property of differential flatness and the identification of so-called flat outputs is a continuing research topic. However, the difficulty of both verification and identification heavily depends on the representation of the system. Mathematical models of the radiofrequency ablation enable to plan, monitor and control interventions allowing to predict and improve their outcome. A system of coupled partial differential equations suitable for planning, analysis and real time implementation is proposed to model the multipolar radiofrequency ablation under consideration of capillary blood perfusion in the spine. To address the multipolar operation, time dependent boundary conditions to the model are introduced. Accounting for the application in the spine, consisting of various tissue types, we consider spatially distributed model parameters. Since the spatially distributed parameters play a key role, analytic expressions for a sensitivity analysis are derived. Based on the model, simulations are performed underlining the quality of the approach and analysing the influence of the spatially distributed parameters. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd.
