We consider a passivity based cooperative control problem, and show that the steady state behavior of the networked system is intimately related to a family convex network optimization problems. This result provides a duality interpretation between the different signals in the cooperative control system. In particular, we show that the input and output signals as well as the dynamic controller state and controller output are pairs of dual variables. The presented results facilitate an optimal controller design in networked systems. We show how this novel interpretation leads the way to an optimal routing design in distribution networks. Nonlinear model predictive control for path following problems

This paper presents a general nonlinear model predictive control scheme for path following problems. Path following problem of nonlinear systems is transformed into a parameter-dependent regulation problem. Sufficient conditions for recursive feasibility and asymptotic convergence of the given scheme are presented. Furthermore, a polytopic linear differential inclusion-based method of choosing a suitable terminal penalty and the corresponding terminal constraint are proposed. To illustrate the implementation of the nonlinear model predictive control scheme, the path following problem of a car-like mobile robot is discussed, and the control performance is confirmed by simulation results. Acquisition of Behavioral Dynamics for Vision Based Mobile Robot Navigation from Demonstrations

The design of robust vision based robot navigation behaviors remains a challenge in mobile robotics as it requires a coherent mapping between a complex visual perception and its associated robot motion. This contribution proposes a framework to learn this general relationship from a small set of representative demonstrations in which an expert manually navigates the robot through its environment. Behaviors are represented by a dynamic system that ties the perceptions to actions. The state of the behavioral dynamics is characterized by a small set of visual features extracted from an omnidirectional image of the local environment. Recording, learning and generalization takes place in the product space of visual features and robot controls. Training instances are recorded for three distinctive behaviors namely corridor following, obstacle avoidance and homing. Behavioral dynamics are represented as Gaussian mixture models, parameters of which are identified from the recorded demonstrations. The learned behaviors are able to accomplish the task across a diverse set of initial poses and situations. In order to realize global navigation, the behaviors are coordinated via hand designed arbitration or command fusion schemes. The experimental validation of the proposed approach confirms that the acquired visual navigation behaviors in cooperation accomplish robust navigation in indoor environments.

The problem of maintaining balance between consumption and production of electric energy in the presence of a high share of intermittent power sources in a transmission grid is addressed. A distributed, asynchronous optimization algorithm, based on the ideas of cutting-plane approximations and adjustable robust counterparts, is presented to compute economically optimal adjustable dispatch strategies. These strategies guarantee satisfaction of the power balancing constraint as well as of the operational constraints for all possible realizations of the uncertain power generation or demand. The communication and computational effort of the proposed distributed algorithm increases for each computational unit only slowly with the number of participants, making it well suited for large scale networks. A distributed implementation of the algorithm and a numerical study are presented, which show the performance in asynchronous networks and its robustness against packet loss. Copyright © 2013 IFAC.

We deduce rigorous conditions for the onset of amplitude death (AD) and oscillation death (OD) in a system of identical coupled paradigmatic Stuart-Landau oscillators. A nonscalar coupling and high frequency are beneficial for the onset of AD. In strong contrast, scalar diffusive coupling and low intrinsic frequency are in favor of the emergence of OD. Our finding contributes to clearly distinguish intrinsic geneses for AD and OD, and further substantially corroborates that AD and OD are indeed two dynamically distinct oscillation quenching phenomena due to distinctly different mechanisms.

Inner Approximations of Consistent Parameter Sets by Constraint Inversion and Mixed-Integer Programming

Mathematical modeling has become an indispensable tool in the analysis, prediction and control of chemical and biological systems. However, the estimation of consistent model parametrizations and model invalidation are challenging tasks, but crucial for reliable model-based analysis and prediction. Set-based estimation methods are useful to determine guaranteed outer approximations of consistent parameter sets, i. e. consistent parametrizations are never excluded. However, these conservative outer approximating sets often include inconsistent parametrizations which lead to inconsistent models and hence possibly wrong model-based predictions. This paper proposes a set-based framework to determine inner approximations, i.e. the model is guaranteed consistent with measurement data for all parametrizations from this set. Our approach is based on the reformulation and inversion of measurement data constraints and by imposing nonlinear constraints on binary variables. The relaxation of the mixed-integer nonlinear feasibility problem into a mixed-integer linear feasibility problem allows the inner approximations to be determined efficiently. The applicability of this approach is demonstrated considering a nonlinear biochemical reaction network.

Constrained stabilization of periodic discrete-time systems via periodic Lyapunov functions

This article considers the problem of constrained stabilization of periodically time-varying discrete-time systems, or shortly, periodic systems. A modification of a recent result on periodic Lyapunov functions, which are required to decrease at every period rather than at every time instant, is exploited to obtain a new stabilizing controller synthesis method for periodic systems. We demonstrate that for the relevant class of linear periodic systems subject to polytopic state and input constraints, the developed synthesis method is advantageous compared to the standard Lyapunov synthesis method. An illustrative example demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Currently, the aging of the population has become the world's social problems. The increasing aging population and lots of disability, paralysis makes nursing care more difficult. Because of many elderly can not get timely care, the phenomenon that the elderly have chronic diseases has become more and more serious. It is important to research and develop new product which can help the elderly and the disabled for improving the quality of their life. This paper suggested a new type of multifunctional self-caring wheelchair-bed, which is combined with a wheelchair and a bed. The bed can realize the free conversion among user sitting, leg lifting and lie down, and also can implement the function of turning on sides. Particularly, the wheelchair can be easily separated from the bed and combined, so that patients and the elderly can move freely using it, and even it can be transformed into a standing type to satisfy the patient's standing demand, and to a certain extent, carry out the purpose of rehabilitation. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
