This paper proposes a nonsmooth optimization technique to cope with the H ∞ synthesis problem under weak coupling uncertainty. For some kind of systems, a single controller cannot be found in terms of a given robust performance objective, whereas a multiple robust controller can satisfy the desired performances by introducing extra controllers and dividing the entire uncertainty into small partitioned sets. Such partitioned sets can be generated based on the small gain theorem and μ -analysis. In addition to solving the weak-coupled parametric uncertainty, the partition with decoupled algorithm can improve the design efficiency. However, the multiple robust controller design has to be transformed into a nonsmooth optimization problem. This paper uses the Clarke subdifferential and steepest descent method to acquire the gradient information of the nonsmooth function. The validity of our method is illustrated and verified by a practical controller design case-study for a satellite attitude control problem.

A Distributed Solution to the Adjustable Robust Economic Dispatch Problem

The problem of maintaining balance between consumption and production of electric energy in the presence of a high share of intermittent power sources in a transmission grid is addressed. A distributed, asynchronous optimization algorithm, based on the ideas of cutting-plane approximations and adjustable robust counterparts, is presented to compute economically optimal adjustable dispatch strategies. These strategies guarantee satisfaction of the power balancing constraint as well as of the operational constraints for all possible realizations of the uncertain power generation or demand. The communication and computational effort of the proposed distributed algorithm increases for each computational unit only slowly with the number of participants, making it well suited for large scale networks. A distributed implementation of the algorithm and a numerical study are presented, which show the performance in asynchronous networks and its robustness against packet loss.

The benefits of decreasing the quality (Q) factor of an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) micro-cantilever, when operating in tapping mode, using passive piezoelectric shunt control have been previously demonstrated. A passive electrical impedance is placed in series with the cantilever oscillation voltage to control the Q factor of the cantilever. The amount of Q factor reduction obtainable using this method is limited due to the passive nature of the shunt impedance. This work demonstrates that further decreases in the cantilever Q factor may be obtained through the use of an active impedance. The active impedance is designed in such a way that the piezoelectric shunt controller emulates a PPF controller in a displacement feedback loop. The damping obtained with this controller is compared with the maximum damping obtainable with a passive impedance.

This paper formulates and addresses the problem of equivalence in terms of multistability properties between gene regulatory systems of different dimensionality. Given a dynamical system of a gene regulatory network, and the structure of another, higher-dimensional gene regulatory network, the aim is to find a dynamical system for the latter which has the same stability properties as the *** propose construction rules for the dynamics of a high-dimensional system, given the low-dimensional system and the high-dimensional network structure. These construction rules yield a multistability-equivalent system, as we prove in this work. The usefulness of our method is illustrated with an exemplary gene regulatory network, for which we construct a dynamical system which has the same multistability properties as a given, low-dimensional model of gene regulation.

In this paper, we propose an economic model predictive control algorithm which ensures satisfaction of transient average constraints, i.e., constraints on input and state variables averaged over some finite time period. Compared to asymptotic average constraints, this stricter form might be of independent interest in various applications such as the operation of a chemical reactor, where e.g. the amount of inflow during each one hour period must not exceed a certain value. We show that compared to asymptotic average constraints, a different constraint formulation within the optimization problem solved at each time instant is needed, but that certain results such as closed-loop average performance and convergence established for the former setting can be transferred to the case of transient average constraints.

The paper deals with the coordination of dynamical systems by distributed model predictive *** consider a set-up in which the subsystems dynamics are decoupled, while the subsystems outputs are coupled by some constraint. Starting from a well established non-iterative and non-cooperative architecture, we provide a novel interpretation for this non-cooperative scheme as a simplicial approximation of a convex program. Thanks to this novel interpretation, we are able to show why the existing algorithm, while guaranteeing feasibility, fails to compute an optimal solution to the centralized problem. Furthermore, by exploiting the simplicial approximation structure, we are able to propose a novel algorithm. The proposed algorithm inherits all the properties of the existing one, namely little communication, and feasibility. Furthermore, increasing the communication among the subsystems between two control updates improves the performance of the algorithm, regaining in the limit optimality in a cooperative sense.

The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we discuss necessity of a dissipativity condition which was recently used to prove optimal operation of a system at steady-state in an economic MPC framework. We illustrate with several examples that this dissipativity condition is not necessary, but comes close to being so in a certain sense. Second, we provide a Lyapunov-like stability analysis for averagely constrained economic model predictive control. This closes a gap which was left open in a recent paper on economic MPC.

Obtaining initial conditions and parameterizations leading to a model consistent with available measurements or safety specifications is important for many applications. Examples include model (in-)validation, prediction, fault diagnosis, and controller design. We present an approach to determine inner- and outer-approximations of the set containing all consistent initial conditions/parameterizations for nonlinear (polynomial) continuous-time systems. These approximations are found by occupation measures that encode the system dynamics and measurements, and give rise to an infinite-dimensional linear program. We exploit the flexibility and linearity of the decision problem to incorporate unknown-but-bounded and pointwise-in-time state and output constraints, a feature which was not addressed in previous works. The infinite-dimensional linear program is relaxed by a hierarchy of LMI problems that provide certificates in case no consistent initial condition/parameterization exists. Furthermore, the applied LMI relaxation guarantees that the approximations converge (almost uniformly) to the true consistent set. We illustrate the approach with a biochemical reaction network involving unknown initial conditions and parameters.

Crowd evacuation has become a primary safety issue in many public places in a metropolitan area. Experts from different fields have worked on modeling and designing evacuating policies by using different tools and methods. In this paper, an optimal control approach is used to derive guiding strategies for the rescue agents under different circumstances. Various optimal control problems are formulated to handle different assumptions of the scenario. Both the analytic solutions and the numerical simulation confirm the efficiency of this approach, which in turn can be potentially used as decision-making support in practical applications.
