This paper addresses networking and traffic control problems in network systems along with the potential for introducing soft-computing applications at supervisory control level. The incentive Stackelberg strategy control concept was introduced to the networking model that comprises subsidiary systems of users and of network. A linear strategy is proposed for the elastic traffic problem, and results are demonstrated and illustrated via Kelly's (1997) example. The presented method is extended to the non-elastic traffic problem and results are also illustrated via a slightly modified Kelly example. Ways of employing combined analytical and soft-computing approaches and techniques in a hybrid framework have been investigated. A fuzzy-Petri-net supervisor is proposed to implement the strategic decision and control layer. Insofar obtained results are rather encouraging, and this research continues further towards possible implementation as well as some open theoretical issues. © 2001 IEEE.

Based on the Lyapunov Stability Theorem for linear systems, a very simple sufficient stability condition is derived for second-order linear systems in terms of the positive definiteness of the system coefficient matrices. This condition generalizes some known result and may have important applications in robust stability analysis and robust stabilization of uncertain second-order linear systems. © 2001 EUCA.

The problem of eigenvalue assignment with minimum sensitivity in multivariable descriptor linear systems via state feedback is considered. Based on the perturbation theory of generalized eigenvalues of matrix pairs, the sensitivity measures of the closed-loop finite eigenvalues are established in terms of the closed-loop normalized right and left eigenvectors. By combining these measures with a recently proposed general parametric eigenstructure assignment result for descriptor linear systems via state feedback, the robust pole assignment problem is converted into an independent minimization problem. The optimality of the obtained solution to the robust pole assignment problem is totally dependent on the solution to the independent minimization problem. The closed-loop eigenvalues are also taken as a part of the design parameters and are optimized, together with the other degrees of freedom, within certain desired regions on the complex plane. The approach takes numerical stability into consideration and also gives good robustness for the closed-loop regularity. © 2001 EUCA.

Computation of an ARMA covariance function is a common ingredient in analysis and synthesis of various problems in stochastic control, estimation and signal processing. In this paper, we present an algorithm based on simple polynomial calculations. Compared to alternative strategies, its computational load increases slowly with the order of the process. Further, it shows good numerical robustness and applies to multivariable ARMA processes, even with complex-valued coefficients. © 2001 EUCA.

Based on a method for right coprime factorizations of linear systems using matrix elementary transformations, it is shown that a very simple iteration formula exists for right coprime factorizations of multi-input linear systems in system upper Hessenberg forms. This formula gives directly the coefficient matrices of the pair of solutions to the right coprime factorization of the system Hessenberg form, and involves only manipulations of inverses of a few triangular matrices and some matrix productions and summations. Based on this formula, a simple, efficient procedure for determining a right coprime factorization of a multi-input linear system is proposed, which first converts a given linear system into its system Hessenberg form using some orthogonal similarity transformations and then applies the iteration formula to the converted system Hessenberg form. An example demonstrates the usage of the approach.

The paper presents the design of spatial control system of a large pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) with the constraint that the closed loop system be stable even if one output sensor has failed. Linear state models are obtained corresponding to the normal operating condition and different failure modes of the reactor. Each model is found to possess two time scale property. Application of a standard singular perturbation approach decouples the fast varying modes which are ignored to eliminate the stiffness. Thus a reduced model is obtained for each operating mode of the reactor. Convex programming is used to search for an output injection gain which stabilizes all reduced models simultaneously. This output injection gain is then realized simultaneously in all operating modes by a controller based on periodic output feedback.

Based on a complete parametric approach for eigenstructure assignment in descriptor linear systems via output feedback, disturbance decoupling using output feedback in descriptor linear systems is investigated. Both the dynamical and static disturbance decoupling problems are tackled. Necessary and sufficient conditions for both problems are proposed in terms of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors. By arranging these conditions into constraints on the design parameters provided by eigenstructure assignment, the disturbance decoupling problems are converted into eigenstructure assignment problems with extra parameter constraints. The approach guarantees closed-loop regularity, offers certain flexibility and can provide all the degrees of design freedom. An example is investigated to show the effect of the proposed approach.

Based on a recently proposed parametric approach for eigenstrueture assignment in descriptor linear systems via output feedback, the robust eigenvalue assignment problem in descriptor linear systems via output feedback is solved. The problem aims to assign a set of finite closed-loop eigenvalues which have minimum sensitivities with respect to perturbations in the closed-loop coefficient matrices, while at the same time, guarantee the closed-loop regularity. The approach optimizes the design parameters existing in the closed-loop eigenvectors to achieve the minimum eigenvalue sensitivities, and use the extra degree of freedom existing in the solution ofthe gain matrix to further minimize the magnitude ofthe gain matrix and enhance the robustness ofthe closed-loop regularity. The approach allows the finite closed-loop eigenvalues to be optimized within desired regions, and is demonstrated to be simple and effective.

Disturbance Attenuation in Luenberger Function Observer Designs — A Parametric Approach

This paper proposes a simple approach for disturbance attenuation in the designs of Luenberger function observers for multi variable linear systems. The basic idea is to minimise the H 2 norm of the transfer function from disturbance to estimation error using the design freedom provided by a parametric approach for Luenberger observer design. Besides the design parameters, the observer poles are also optimised within desired regions on the left-half complex plane. With the proposed approach, additional specifications can be easily achieved.
