Heuristic optimization for the discrete virtual power plant dispatch problem

We consider a virtual power plant, which is given the task of dispatching a fluctuating power supply to a portfolio of flexible consumers. The flexible consumers are modeled as discrete batch processes, and the associated optimization problem is denoted the discrete virtual power plant dispatch problem (DVPPDP). First, the nondeterministic polynomial time (NP)-completeness of the discrete virtual power plant dispatch problem is proved formally. We then proceed to develop tailored versions of the meta-heuristic algorithms hill climber and greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP). The algorithms are tuned and tested on portfolios of varying sizes. We find that all the tailored algorithms perform satisfactorily in the sense that they are able to find sub-optimal, but usable, solutions to very large problems (on the order of 105 units) at computation times on the scale of just 10 s, which is far beyond the capabilities of the optimal algorithms we have tested. In particular, GRASP sorted shows with the most promising performance, as it is able to find solutions that are both agile (sorted) and well balanced, and consistently yields the best numerical performance among the developed algorithms. © 2014 IEEE.

Utilization of consumers to mitigate the impact of increasing renewable resources on power systems is one of the visions of future smart grids. Flexible consumers are consumers who can change their consumption patterns in such a way as to help the grid to tackle the balancing problem. In previous work, we proposed a hierarchical structure to provide regulating power to the grid by just utilizing the consumption units. The main focus of that work was on designing a centralized controller, a so-called aggregator, which is responsible for aggregating the flexibilities in an optimal way. To accomplish the optimization, the aggregator requires a model which describes the behavior of each consumption unit. These models should be sufficiently simple to be used in the optimization task. However, simple models might not capture all dynamics and features of the real system. In this paper, we will evaluate the proposed setup to understand to what extent the utilization of simplified models can lead to reasonable results. To this end, we will connect the aggregator to a complex and verified model of an actual supermarket refrigeration system which enables us to investigate the closed-loop behavior of the whole set-up. © IFAC.

Parameter estimation in switched systems is an interesting topic, since such vital models can be used for modeling a wide range of real life systems controlled by a hysteresis or other switching mechanics. In this work, a model for enabling the extended Kalman filter to estimate the parameters in such a switched hysteresis system is presented and tested. The nonlinear model used in the filter is found by a continuous approximation of the discrete switching function used for describing the switched systems. The proposed filter are tested which shows that the filter is able to estimate all the model parameters, this includes the parameters describing the switching. And since the EKF is a recursive filter the method is suitable for real life implementation, therefore a test on an actual data set from an operational turbine have been used with success to validate that the proposed method is actually applicable for parameter estimation in a real world switched system.

Gliomas are the most common primary brain malignancies, with different degrees of aggressiveness, variable prognosis and various heterogeneous histologic sub-regions, i.e., peritumoral edematous/invaded tissue, necrotic core, active and non-enhancing core. This intrinsic heterogeneity is also portrayed in their radio-phenotype, as their sub-regions are depicted by varying intensity profiles disseminated across multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) scans, reflecting varying biological properties. Their heterogeneous shape, extent, and location are some of the factors that make these tumors difficult to resect, and in some cases inoperable. The amount of resected tumor is a factor also considered in longitudinal scans, when evaluating the apparent tumor for potential diagnosis of progression. Furthermore, there is mounting evidence that accurate segmentation of the various tumor sub-regions can offer the basis for quantitative image analysis towards prediction of patient overall survival. This study assesses the state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) methods used for brain tumor image analysis in mpMRI scans, during the last seven instances of the International Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge, i.e., 2012-2018. Specifically, we focus on i) evaluating segmentations of the various glioma sub-regions in pre-operative mpMRI scans, ii) assessing potential tumor progression by virtue of longitudinal growth of tumor sub-regions, beyond use of the RECIST/RANO criteria, and iii) predicting the overall survival from pre-operative mpMRI scans of patients that underwent gross total resection. Finally, we investigate the challenge of identifying the best ML algorithms for each of these tasks, considering that apart from being diverse on each instance of the challenge, the multi-institutional mpMRI BraTS dataset has also been a continuously evolving/growing dataset. In this work, control strategies for aggregation of a portfolio of supermarkets towards the electricity balancing market, is investigated. The supermarkets are able to shift the power consumption in time by pre-cooling the contained foodstuff. It is shown how the flexibility of an individual supermarket can be modeled and how this model can be used by an aggregator to manage the portfolio to deliver upward and downward regulation. Two control strategies for managing the portfolio to follow a power reference are presented and compared. The first strategy is a non-convex predictive control strategy while the second strategy consists of a PI controller and a dispatch algorithm. The predictive controller has a high performance but is computationally heavy. In contrast the PI/dispatch strategy has lower performance, but requires little computational effort and scales well with the number of supermarkets. Two simulations are conducted based on high-fidelity supermarket models: a small-scale simulation with 20 supermarkets where the performance of the two strategies are compared and a large-scale simulation with 400 supermarkets which only the PI/dispatch controller is able to handle. The large-scale simulation shows how a portfolio of 400 supermarkets successfully can be used for upward regulation of 900 kW for a two hour period. © IFAC.

We consider the event-triggered state estimation of a finite-state hidden Markov model with a general stochastic event-triggering condition. Utilizing the change of probability measure approach and the event-triggered measurement information available to the estimator, analytical expressions for the conditional probability distributions of the states are obtained, based on which the minimum mean square error event-based state estimates are further calculated. We show that the results also cover the case of packet dropout, under a special parameterization of the event-triggering conditions. With the results on state estimation, a closed-form expression of the average sensor-to-estimator communication rate is also presented. The effectiveness of the proposed results is illustrated by a numerical example and comparative simulations.
