Biometric systems for contactless identification of a person by palm blood vessels have become widespread recently. The relevance is due to a combination of such factors as hygiene, higher degree of protection against counterfeit, and delicacy compared to other methods. Vein pattern recognition algorithm can be divided into two steps. The first step, pre-processing, is to detect the Region-of-Interest (ROI). The second step involves extracting singular points of the vein bed (feature extraction) and matching the vein pattern with the database templates (feature matching) which can be performed using various methods. The paper presents the study of several parametric methods for recognizing and matching the input image with the database templates - correlation calculation, calculation of singular points (descriptors) and calculation of perceptual hashes. The comparative analysis of the results was carried out according to the following criteria - evaluating the recognition quality, evaluating the processing speed, estimating the size of the database. We have revealed a significant advantage of the hash method in comparison with other parametric methods under study within the paper. The results will be of use for developers of authentication systems based on image analysis. © 2022 IEEE.

Penetration of distributed generation into distribution grids brings new demands for both centralized and distributed control at the low-voltage level. In particular, when trying to coordinate the production from distributed generation, communication becomes an important aspect of control design. However, whereas local control typically occurs at sub-second resolution, communication between geographically separate locations based on e.g., smart meter data, commonly takes place at much lower frequencies, such as on an hourly basis or even slower. Therefore, novel distribution grids should be analyzed and controlled within the context of cyber-physical systems. Hybrid systems, which cover systems that have both continuous and discrete dynamics, provide the natural setting for such analysis. In this paper, a hybrid model of the distribution grid considering both the continuous states of the power network and the discrete nature of the communication is presented, capturing the different update rates of centralized and local controllers in the modeling process. Simulation results show good agreement with data from a real-life system. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel control strategy for image-based visual servoing (IBVS) of underwater vehicle manipulator systems (UVMS) using control barrier functions (CBFs) to handle field of view (FoV) constraints and system’s operational limitations such as manipulator joint limits and vehicle velocity performances. The proposed approach combines the advantages of IBVS, which provides visual feedback for control, with CBFs, which can formally enforce visibility and safety constraints on the UVMS’s motion. A CBF-based control law is derived and integrated with the IBVS algorithm, which guarantees the satisfaction of FoV and system’s operational constraints and ensure stability of the closed-loop system. To deal with FoV constraints, the proposed method uses a FoV index to estimate the degree of visibility of the scene, which is used to adjust the control inputs accordingly. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated through realistic simulation results, showing improved performance and safety of the UVMS under FoV and operational constraints compared to traditional IBVS methods. The results indicate that the proposed approach can handle the challenging underwater environment, UVMS dynamics and the operational constraints effectively, making it a valuable control strategy for practical applications of UVMS.

In this paper, we derive and implement a probabilistic programming idiom for the problem of acquiring new knowledge about an environment. The idiom is implemented utilizing a modern probabilistic programming language. We demonstrate the utility of this idiom by implementing an algorithm for the specific problem of active mapping and robot exploration. Accurately and promptly quantifying stiction is crucial for valve maintenance in industrial settings and ensuring the stability of control loop performance. However, current Hammerstein-based stiction quantification methods overlook valve dynamics, potentially leading to inaccurate quantification. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel stiction quantification method based on an adaptive differential evolution algorithm. In addition to considering the impact of valve dynamics on stiction, the proposed method demonstrates a certain level of robustness against the interference of unknown noise. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through a series of simulations and industrial case studies. © 2024 IEEE.

Today, at “Uzbekistan Temir Yollari” JSC, train traffic management is continuously improved and updated based on international regulatory and legal standards. This article addresses the pressing issue of digitalizing the control and monitoring systems for the signaling, centralization, and blocking of the sorting hill at the sorting station managed by “Uzbekistan Temir Yollari” JSC using modern wireless communication technologies. The method for the automated microprocessorbased control system of signaling, centralization, and blocking devices for the sorting hill at the railway station is based on the digitalization of remote control methods for braking and stopping devices for wagons descending the hill. These braking and stopping devices automatically adjust to the weight and speed of the descending wagons. A graph showing the dependence of the wagons braking time on its weight and speed is created, ensuring traffic safety at sorting hills. The digitalization of signaling, centralization, and blocking systems, the elimination of the human factor, and the integration of these systems with electrical centralization based on digital data are aimed at solving this problem.

Oscillation is a significant indication of the deterioration of control system performance and needs to be carefully monitored to ensure safe and stable process operations. However, industrial processes are often prone to noisy artifacts and nonstationary trends, resulting in low signal-to-noise ratios. In order to tackle this problem, this study introduces a novel framework for enhanced trend removal and noise reduction, which is featured by the following steps:(i) The circulant singular spectrum analysis (CiSSA) is used to decompose oscillation data into several reconstructed components (RCs). (ii) The estimated power spectral density (PSD) ofthese RCs is then smoothed using the Savitzky-Golay filter (SGF) to eliminate noise and identify the RCs corresponding to oscillatory components. (iii) These identified RCs are subsequently reconstructed to produce purified oscillatory data. The effectiveness of the suggested approach is validated using simulations and real-world industrial case studies. The findings indicate that the method notably enhances the quality of oscillatory data. © 2024 IEEE.

The paper considers the solution of the scientific and practical problem of assessing the accuracy and stability of the sensors working as part of the microprocessor control system for the parameters of the microclimate of an artificial ecosystem by using statistical methods for analyzing measurement results using the example of a temperature sensor. The importance of this task lies in the fact that the organization of accurate control of the parameters of the microclimate will ensure optimal climatic conditions for the development of plants and fish, and create an environment as similar as possible to the natural one by timely control of parameters and a quick reaction to the output of parameters at critical values. For the analysis, three series of measurement results of the control indicator (water temperature) were used. The analysis confirmed the hypothesis that there are no violations of the stability of the temperature sensor, which makes it possible to recognize the metrological sensor as reliable. It is proved that the problems of increasing the likelihood of controlling objects with stochastic parameters, and controlling their metrological reliability are relevant and are important for the development of the theory and practice of non-dismantling control. © 2022 IEEE.

A least squares strategy to estimate states and parameters for type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients based only on continuous glucose measurements and injected insulin in the presence of unannounced meals and disturbances, e.g., physical activity and stress, is presented. The strategy is based on a simple T2D patient model and tested with clinical data in addition to simulated data generated by using jump diffusion models for meals and disturbances. Three parameters are estimated together with the states, meals, and disturbances. The estimated meal states were shown to follow the trend of the unannounced meals. The strategy can be used to obtain a model with the estimated parameters for predictive control design. In addition, the strategy can also be used to test different insulin and meal plans with the estimated disturbances and parameters. Moreover, the paper demonstrates the ability of jump diffusion models to simulate meals and disturbances. © 2021 EUCA.

On Bellman’s principle of optimality and Reinforcement learning for safety-constrained Markov decision process

We study optimality for the safety-constrained Markov decision process which is the underlying framework for safe reinforcement learning. Specifically, we consider a constrained Markov decision process (with finite states and finite actions) where the goal of the decision maker is to reach a target set while avoiding an unsafe set(s) with certain probabilistic guarantees. Therefore the underlying Markov chain for any control policy will be multichain since by definition there exists a target set and an unsafe set. The decision maker also has to be optimal (with respect to a cost function) while navigating to the target set. This gives rise to a multi-objective optimization problem. We highlight the fact that Bellman’s principle of optimality [1] may not hold for constrained Markov decision problems with an underlying multichain structure (as shown by the counterexample in [2]). We resolve the counterexample in [2] by formulating the aforementioned multi-objective optimization problem as a zero-sum game and thereafter construct an asynchronous value iteration scheme for the Lagrangian (similar to Shapley’s algorithm [3]). Finally, we consider the reinforcement learning problem for the same and construct a modified Qlearning algorithm for learning the Lagrangian from data. We also provide a lower bound on the number of iterations required for learning the Lagrangian and corresponding error bounds. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.
