The focus in this paper is on active fault diagnosis (AFD) in closed-loop sampleddata systems. Applying the same AFD architecture as for continuous-time systems does not directly result in the same set of closed-loop matrix transfer functions. For continuous-time systems, the LFT (linear fractional transformation) structure in the connection between the parametric faults and the matrix transfer function (also known as the fault signature matrix) applied for AFD is not directly preserved for sampled-data system. As a consequence of this, the AFD methods cannot directly be applied for sampled-data systems. Two methods are considered in this paper to handle the fault signature matrix for sampled-data systems such that standard AFD methods can be applied. The first method is based on a discretization of the system such that the LFT structure is preserved resulting in the same LFT structure in the fault signature matrix as obtained for continuous-time systems. The other method is an approximation method, where the same structure is obtained for small parametric faults. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents an experimental study of persistent coverage control for mobile sensor networks. The objective of this paper is to lead mobile sensors to an optimal configuration over a mission space in the presence of persistent change in the measured environmental. For this purpose, we introduce the concept of information decay, which means that the reliability of the measured information decays with time. We first formulate the persistent coverage control problem and then present a control algorithm that is maximizing the objective function persistently under information decay. The feature of the present algorithm is to combine a standard coverage control scheme with a time-dependent sensing information function. We finally demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented algorithm through experiments on a testbed.

In the paper we discuss the recently introduced Mobile Model Predictive control (Mobile MPC) approach for an irrigation canal. Mobile MPC is a configuration of MPC that explicitly incorporates the role of the human operator traveling between the gates as ordered by a remote centralized controller. The operator provides the controller with up-to-date measurements from the locations visited and acts as the actuator as required by the remote controller. Mobile MPC provides a solution in between fully manual and fully automatic canal operation, as the first one may give poor performance and the second one might be impracticable in some situations, where it is not possible to rely on the equipment installed in the field. In the current paper we improve the performance of the original Mobile MPC approach by allowing the controller to decide the exact time instants when the operator should arrive at a specific gate and change the gate's settings as well as we include a penalty in the objective function for the controller to minimize the workload of the human operator. We show that the new approach yields enhanced performance in comparison to the previous method, and we demonstrate the benefits of the new method as opposed to the previous one in a case study.

In this work, the problem of rigid body attitude control by magnetic torqueing is considered. The aim of the work is to derive an asymptotically stable solution to this problem, which is known to have two challenging properties: instantaneous underactuation due to the structure of the magnetic torque production law; time-variance due to the dependence of that law on the time-varying local geomagnetic field vector. To ensure an asymptotically stable motion towards the reference state in inertial space, a time-varying sliding manifold is proposed in this paper. The manifold has two parts. The first part is a linear function of states and is well-known in literature to be specific to the problem of rigid body attitude control by momentum exchange- or reaction-based torqueing. The second part consists of two integral terms with respect to time, whose integrands are respectively the angular orientation of the body in inertial space and the component of the control vector along the local geomagnetic field. These designed time-integral terms enable the application of the equivalent control method to the considered problem and make the state vector converge to the reference state in sliding mode. With their inclusion in the sliding vector, there exists a time-varying sliding mode in nonlinear rigid body motion controlled by magnetic torque, which is proven by the satisfaction of the reaching condition for the general reaching law. The presented exemplary results of simulation studies, which are carried out under both ideality assumption and non-ideal conditions that are modelled with high-fidelity, verify the mathematical results.

This paper presents a solution to the control to facet problem for arbitrary polynomial vector fields defined on simplices. The novelty of the work is to use Bernstein coeficients of polynomials for determining certificates of positivity. Specifically, the constraints that are set up for the controller design are solved by searching for polynomials in Bernstein form. This allows the controller design problem to be formulated as a linear programming problem. Examples are provided that demonstrate the eficiency of the method for designing controls for polynomial systems. Copyright 2014 ACM .

A model predictive control (MPC) scheme is introduced to directly control the electrical power consumption of large-scale refrigeration systems. Deviation from the baseline of the consumption is corresponded to the storing and delivering of thermal energy. By virtue of such correspondence, the control method can be employed for regulating power services in the smart grid. The proposed scheme contains the control of cooling capacity as well as optimizing the efficiency factor of the system, which is in general a nonconvex optimization problem. By introducing a fictitious manipulated variable, and novel incorporation of the evaporation temperature set-point into optimization problem, the convex optimization problem is formulated within the MPC scheme. The method is applied to a simulation benchmark of large-scale refrigeration systems including several medium and low temperature cold reservoirs. © 2014 American Automatic control Council.

This paper investigates decentralized control structures for absorption cycle heat pumps and a dynamic nonlinear model of a single-effect LiBr-water absorption system is used as case study. The model has four controllable inputs, which can be used to stabilize the operation of the heat pump under different load conditions. Different feasible input-output pairings are analyzed by computation of relative gain array matrices and scaled condition numbers, which indicate the best pairing choice and the potential of each input-output set. Further, it is possible to minimize the effect of cross couplings and improve stability with the right pairing of input and output. Simulation of selected candidate input-output pairings demonstrate that decentralized control can provide stable operation of the heat pump.

Heat pumps have recently received increasing interest due to green energy initiatives and increasing energy prices. In this paper, a nonlinear dynamic model of a single-effect LiBr-water absorption cycle heat pump is derived for simulation and control design purposes. The model is based on an actual heat pump located at a larger district heating plant. The model is implemented in Modelica and is based on energy and mass balances, together with thermodynamic property functions for LiBr and water and staggered grid representations for heat exchangers. Model parameters have been fitted to operational data and different scenarios are simulated to investigate the operational stability of the heat pump. Finally, this paper provides suggestions and examples of derivation of lower order linear models for control design.

A power generating wind turbine causes a speed reduction and an added turbulence to the wind. Wind turbines in wind farms are often caught in these wakes and are found to have a higher structural load than non affected wind turbines. This article investigates the possibility of designing a control strategy which optimizes the power production, while minimizing the effect of the wakes in the wind farm. A generic wind farm model which is able to calculate the wind turbines influence on each other is developed. Models for the reduction in wind speed as well as turbulence in the wake effects are developed in order to simulate the wake effects. The models are of low complexity, making the wind farm model suitable for control purposes. A model predictive wind farm controller (MPC) is developed and compared to a classical wind farm controller. The MPC is developed, with the ability to minimize the wake effects in the farm, while maintaining optimal power output. A feature which enables the MPC to spare certain turbines, while maintaining the power output is also implemented. The MPC controller is able to minimize the wake effect in the wind farm, when the power demand is not using the full potential of the wind farm. © IFAC.
