COVICT: an IoT based architecture for COVID-19 detection and contact tracing

The world we live in has been taken quite surprisingly by the outbreak of a novel virus namely SARS-CoV-2. COVID-19 i.e. the disease associated with the virus, has not only shaken the world economy due to enforced lockdown but has also saturated the public health care systems of even most advanced countries due to its exponential spread. The fight against COVID-19 pandemic will continue until majority of world’s population get vaccinated or herd immunity is achieved. Many researchers have exploited the Artificial intelligence (AI) knacks based IoT architecture for early detection and monitoring of potential COVID-19 cases to control the transmission of the virus. However, the main cause of the spread is that people infected with COVID-19 do not show any symptoms and are asymptomatic but can still transmit virus to the masses. Researcher have introduced contact tracing applications to automatically detect contacts that can be infected by the index case. However, these fully automated contact tracing apps have not been accepted due to issues like privacy and cross-app compatibility. In the current study, an IoT based COVID-19 detection and monitoring system with semi-automated and improved contact tracing capability namely COVICT has been presented with application of real-time data of symptoms collected from individuals and contact tracing. The deployment of COVICT, the prediction of infected persons can be made more effective and contaminated areas can be identified to mitigate the further propagation of the virus by imposing Smart Lockdown. The proposed IoT based architecture can be quite helpful for regulatory authorities for policy making to fight COVID-19. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Offsets Reconstruction Method for Clock Skew Measurement Over High-Jitter Communication

Measuring clock skew of devices over a network fully relies on the offsets, the differences between sending and receiving times. Offsets that shape a thick line are the most ideal one as their slope is directly the clock skew sought. When some outliers separate from the thick line due to higher delay jitter, current advanced approaches use the lower bound or the majority of offsets to derive accurate clock skew. However, outliers in offsets that shape parallel dotted lines, reduce the availability of offsets in the lower region, and scatter widely the offsets from their majority zone. These conditions drive the current skew estimation approaches to lose their accuracy. This paper then developed a new method, which reconstructs back the outliers into their origin positions, in order to provide ideal offsets for clock skew measurement. The experimental evaluations have demonstrated that the clock skew accuracy of dotted-lines offsets tampered by outliers was improved from 2.1 to 0.9 ppm by the proposed reconstruction method. For a broader purpose, the reconstruction method has been adjusted to be implemented also on non-dotted-lines offsets. The robustness of the proposed method for this case has also been exhibited by the very ideal reconstructed offsets that shape like a thick line. © The Author(s) 2025.

This article proposes a neural network hybrid modeling framework for dynamics learning to promote an interpretable, computationally efficient method of dynamics learning and system identification. First, a low-level model is trained to learn the system dynamics, which utilizes multiple simple neural networks to approximate the local dynamics generated from data-driven partitions. Then, based on the low-level model, a high-level model is trained to abstract the low-level neural hybrid system model into a transition system that allows computational tree logic (CTL) verification to promote model's ability to handle human interaction and verification efficiency. © 2024 by ASME.

This study introduces a new approach in Korean morphological analysis combining dictionary-based techniques with Transformer-based deep learning models. The key innovation is the use of a BERT-based reranking system, significantly enhancing the accuracy of traditional morphological analysis. The method generates multiple suboptimal paths, then employs BERT models for reranking, leveraging their advanced language comprehension. Results show remarkable performance improvements, with the first-stage reranking achieving over 20% improvement in error reduction rate compared with existing models. The second stage, using another BERT variant, further increases this improvement to over 30%. This indicates a significant leap in accuracy, validating the effectiveness of merging dictionary-based analysis with contemporary deep learning. The study suggests future exploration in refined integrations of dictionary and deep learning methods as well as using probabilistic models for enhanced morphological analysis. This hybrid approach sets a new benchmark in the field and offers insights for similar challenges in language processing applications. 1225-6463/$ © 2024 ETRI.

Software requirements are the expectation of stakeholders which are identified and modeled by various requirements elicitation and modeling techniques like traditional methods, goal oriented methods, and unified modeling language (UML), etc. The identified software requirements are broadly classified into functional requirements (FRs) and non-functional requirements (NFRs). Based on our literature review, we found that most of the focus in the area of software engineering is on the analysis of FRs as compared to NFRs. For the successful development of any information system both FRs and NFRs should be considered equally during the elicitation and modeling process;and ignoring NFRs may lead to failure of software. Therefore, to address this issue, we developed a method for the analysis of both FRs and NFRs so that a successful software product can be developed by a software company. In the proposed method, FRs are modeled by UML use-case diagram, class-diagram, and activity diagram. The NFRs are analyzed using NFR-framework;and NFR propagation rules have been derived from the requirements of an information system. In this framework, fuzzy based approach has been used to analyze the contribution links of softgoal interdependency graph. This project aimed to implement a prototype capable of real-time monitoring and control of various parameters in information management setting with Internet of Things (IoT). Research methodology involved designing and implementing the system prototype to resemble a supply container or transportation truck with installed sensors controlled by a microcontroller. Main components used temperature sensors (AHT20), RFID reader for access control, GPS module for location tracking, and a web/mobile dashboard for remote monitoring. Additionally, a robust database system was developed to store sensor readings and transaction history, ensuring data integrity and facilitating seamless communication between components for real-time data transmission. Key findings indicate that the system effectively monitors temperature, manages access control through RFID authentication, tracks real-time location via GPS, and provides a user-friendly dashboard interface for data visualization. © 2025 IEEE.

Achieving Room-Temperature ppb-Level H2S Detection in a Au-SnO2 Sensor with Low Voltage Enhancement Effect

Although semiconductor metal oxide-based sensors are promising for gas sensing, low-power and room temperature operation (24 ± 1 °C) remains desirable for practical applications particularly considering the request of energy saving or net zero emission. In this study, we demonstrate a Au/SnO2-based ultrasensitive H2S gas sensor with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2 ppb, operating at very low voltages (0.05 to 0.5 V) at room temperature. The Au/SnO2-based sensor showed approximately 7 times higher response (the ratio of change in the current to initial current) of ∼270% and 4 times faster recovery (126 s) compared to the pure SnO2-based sensor when exposed to 500 ppb H2S gas concentration at 0.5 V operating voltage at relative humidity (RH) 17.5 ± 2.5%. The enhancement can be attributed to the catalytic characteristics of AuNPs, increasing the number of adsorbed oxygen species on sensing material surfaces. Additionally, AuNPs aid in forming flower-petal-like Au/SnO2 nanostructures, offering a larger surface area and more active sites for H2S sensing. Moreover, at low voltage (2 interface may further enhance the absorption of polar oxygen molecules and hence promote the reaction between H2S and oxygen species. This low-power, ultrasensitive H2S sensor outperforms high-powered alternatives, making it ideal for environmental, food safety, and healthcare applications. © 2024 The Authors. Various techniques have been developed for the identification of different types of requirements like interview, questionnaire, group elicitation techniques, attributed goal-oriented requirements analysis, fuzzy based goal-oriented requirements analysis method, non-functional requirements framework, etc. Based on the critical analysis of requirements elicitation methods, we found that single elicitation technique is not suitable to understand the need of the stakeholders. In real life applications, multiple elicitation techniques are required to elicit and select the requirements of an information system because each technique has its strength and limitations. Therefore, to address this issue, this paper presents a mathematical model for the selection of requirements elicitation techniques so that complete set of requirements along with its priority can be identified before the development of an information system. Personality-based and trust-aware products recommendation in social networks

In recent years, with the development of technology, the shopping approach of people has moved towards pervasive online social shopping. As a result, how to create a recommendation algorithm that offers products based on the personal and different needs and tastes of people on social networks is a significant research issue. This article proposes a personality-based and trust-aware probabilistic product recommendation algorithm in social networks. We present a dynamic method for determining how similar people in social networks are. For this purpose, we consider the personality-based features of recommendation attributes of products in social networks. Then, the level of trust of products and types of correlations among the products is considered to create a probabilistic matrix of product recommendation. Moreover, for solving the cold start problem of products, we consider qualitative aspects of products while exploiting personality-based user behavior regarding their purchases. At last, the empirical experiments are conducted to analyze the impact of the algorithm’s different influence factors using the Amazon dataset. Moreover, the results of comprehensive experiments adopted to verify the proposed personalized recommendation algorithm’s effectiveness show that the proposed algorithm has the appropriate effectiveness and the higher accuracy. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
