Cognitive radio can be considered as a viable frequency access framework that overcomes the disadvantages of the licensed-based transmission procedure by allowing the secondary users to access the spectrum to transmit their data. However, due to the evolution of latency-sensitive real-time communication applications such as gaming and extended reality, it becomes more vital that cognitive radio networks should be studied with latency requirements on the data transmission. Recently, Age of Information has introduced itself as a important metric for evaluating the freshness of the transmitted data. In this paper, we investigate the latency and stability analysis of a two-user cognitive radio network that consists of one primary user, one secondary user and their destinations. The latency requirements of the transmitted data packets are taken into consideration by imposing Age of Information constraints on the data transmission of the users. We present two optimization problems, in the first problem, the secondary user stable throughput is maximized under an Age of Information constraint imposed on the data transmission of the secondary user. While, in the second problem, we maximize the stable throughput of the secondary user with respect to Age of Information constraints set on the data transmission of both the primary and secondary users. The resultant problems are found to be non-linear programming optimization problems. An appropriate algorithm is used to solve the problems and provide the numerical solutions. Our results characterize the impact of setting Age of Information constraints on the stability region of the network;we demonstrate that the stability region, in certain cases, is reduced by only 11% with strict Age of Information restrictions if compared to the scenario where no latency requirements is considered. Our results also show the potential accuracy of the algorithm adopted in this paper to solve the formulated optimization problems. © 2022 IEEE.

In electric power transmission and distribution systems, the use of overhead lines instead of underground cables is preferred by power utilities mainly due to the lower construction cost and the easier maintenance access. On the other hand the equipment used in overhead lines is stressed by several factors, such as weather conditions, lightning, vegetation fires, etc. In particular, vegetation fires under the overhead transmission lines could have catastrophic results for the installed equipment and can cause long-lasting electricity interruptions. In this study, condition assessment results are presented for eighteen 150 kV composite insulators exposed to a forest fire event, occurred in the August 2021, in the island of Rhodes, Greece. The evaluation of the fire effects on composite insulators was performed by employing several macroscopic and microscopic diagnostic techniques including visual inspection, hydrophobicity classification, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and optical microscopy analysis. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

Objective: The healthcare challenge driven by an aging population and rising demand is one of the most pressing issues leading to emergency department (ED) overcrowding. An emerging solution lies in machine learning’s potential to predict ED dispositions, thus leading to promising substantial benefits. This study’s objective is to create a predictive model for ED patient dispositions by employing ensemble learning. It harnesses diverse data types, including structured and unstructured information gathered during ED visits to address the evolving needs of localized healthcare systems. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 80,073 ED patient records were amassed from a major southern Taiwan hospital in 2018–2019. An ensemble model incorporated structured (demographics, vital signs) and pre-processed unstructured data (chief complaints, preliminary diagnoses) using bag-of-words (BOW) and term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF). Two random forest base-learners for structured and unstructured data were employed and then complemented by a multi-layer perceptron meta-learner. Results: The ensemble model demonstrates strong predictive performance for ED dispositions, achieving an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.94. The models based on unstructured data encoded with BOW and TF-IDF yield similar performance results. Among the structured features, the top five most crucial factors are age, pulse rate, systolic blood pressure, temperature, and acuity level. In contrast, the top five most important unstructured features are pneumonia, fracture, failure, suspect, and sepsis. Conclusions: Findings indicate that utilizing ensemble learning with a blend of structured and unstructured data proves to be a predictive method for determining ED dispositions. © The Author(s) 2024.

With the growing presence of semiconductor devices in healthcare, automotive, and consumer electronics, Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) systems play an increasingly vital role in ensuring quality and reliability during validation. Despite their importance, ATE systems often operate in isolation from other manufacturing processes, limiting interoperability and integration potential. Consequently, fully incorporating ATE systems within the Industry 4.0 framework remains a largely unaddressed challenge. To bridge this gap, we propose adopting Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA), the industry de-facto standard communication protocol for machines, with an accompanying specification tailored to ATE systems. We developed and validated our information model on an advanced ATE system, demonstrating its practical application. The results showcase the successful integration of the ATE system into a fully-fledged Industrial computer engineering (ICE) laboratory demonstrator. This study validates the effectiveness of our model in a real-world scenario and highlights the significance of our integration approach within the context of Industry 4.0.

In the current context of urbanization and transportation expansion, the need for accurate and efficient detection systems for public transportation has become of the utmost importance. The paper presents a novel strategy to establish new standards in transportation detection systems. Using the power of the YOLOv5 deep learning algorithm, the dataset is divided into training, testing, and validation segments to ensure a thorough evaluation. With a training dataset size of 75% and a test-validation split of 25%, our methodology showcases a compelling mean Average Precision (mAP) value of 0.973. Our findings highlight a precision of 0.971, pointing to accurate predictions in approximately 97.1% of cases, and a recall of 0.953, underscoring the model's efficiency in capturing around 95.3% of relevant objects. Such results, particularly the distinguishable taxi class among similar objects, represent significant improvements over previous benchmarks. The model's prowess is evident in its ability to distinguish even in situations involving entities that closely resemble one another, such as taxis and police cars. Our proposed system excels with increased accuracy, precision, and F1 scores compared to a standard study. This paper concludes that with the strategic application of YOLOv5, the future of public transportation detection systems is bright and on the cusp of a new era of efficiency and precision. © 2023 IEEE.

The requirements elicitation process is the sub-process of requirements engineering in which stakeholders are involved to identify the requirements of an information system. Various methods have been developed to identify and analyze the stakeholders like goal-oriented requirements elicitation process, traditional methods, etc. Based on our review, we found that little attention is given to the analysis of the stakeholders using different measures of social networks before the starting of the requirements elicitation process. Therefore, to address this issue, this paper presents a StackPage method for the analysis of the stakeholders using page rank algorithm of social network measures. The applicability of the StackPage method is discussed with the help of the stakeholders of an institute examination system. The rapid global shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) marks a transformative era in transportation, driven by the imperative to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. Central to the performance and longevity of EVs are Battery Management Systems (BMS), which optimize battery usage, enhance safety, and extend operational life. This comprehensive review explores current trends and future directions in BMS optimization, focusing on key technological advancements and their implications for electric mobility. Battery Management Systems (BMS) serve as critical components in electric vehicles, orchestrating the efficient operation of battery packs through real-time monitoring, state-of-charge (SoC) estimation, thermal management, and fault diagnosis. These systems not only ensure optimal performance but also safeguard against potential hazards, thereby enhancing vehicle reliability and user confidence. Current advancements in BMS technology emphasize enhanced accuracy in SoC estimation, leveraging sophisticated algorithms and sensor integration to provide precise information on battery charge levels. Coupled with innovative thermal management strategies, which include active cooling and heating systems, BMS can mitigate thermal stress and optimize battery performance across diverse environmental conditions. By synthesizing technological advancements, emerging trends, and potential challenges, it offers valuable insights for researchers, engineers, and policymakers aiming to advance the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of electric mobility solutions worldwide. © 2024 IEEE.

In challenging operational environments such as underground buildings beneath roadways, reliability and performance of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for electric vehicles (EVs) heavily hinge on the operating temperature of the magnetic couplers. Addressing this, this study introduces a novel approach employing heat sink and thermoelectric cooler technologies to mitigate temperature rise in magnetic couplers, which is particularly crucial for high-power applications. Utilizing ANSYS simulation, the study evaluates a WPT high-power application coil model with a total output power of 2 KW and an 18 cm air gap, with a 3.5 cm adjacent alignment to enhance thermal performance on both transmitter and receiver sides. Results demonstrate significant thermal enhancement, reducing the temperature of coils from 63◦ C to 54◦ C solely with the heat sink and further down to 48◦ C with the combined implementation of both heat sink and thermoelectric cooler. These measures effectively dissipate heat from the coils into the surrounding air, ensuring system efficiency and stability while facilitating functionality of system components. © 2024, Electromagnetics Academy.
