Standard techniques for the reinforced concrete structures control are not suitable for RCP (reinforced concrete piles) full-depth diagnostics. Therefore, the special method based on the use of the low-frequency pulse wave excitation has been developed. There are many modifications of this method, but their studies results show that only the large enough defects can be detected, usually exceeding 50% of the pile cross-section area. So, in order to raise the grounded RCPs control capabilities to a fundamentally new technological level, it was necessary to improve existing models and conduct new experiments. The methodology for undisturbed RCPs experimental studies with the echoes’s recording of stress waves, such as longitudinal, transversal, shear and flexural waves and the methodology for the experimental studies of the RCPs having defects, such as voids, necks and caverns in cross sections with the echoes’ recording of different types of stress waves were developed. The useful signals extraction against the disturbances background was carried out and the process of the experiments results processing was analyzed. The useful information was delivered by a quasidetermined signal, which included a sounding impulse and echo-signals from defects and structure opposite end. The information received by the sensor, which was installed on the RCP surface, was the superposition of all wave processes in the pile and obstacles. Due to the random correlation of the oscillation phases, the structural obstacles appeared as a large number of separate, rather clear pulses over the signalogram, and the defects detection against their background became difficult. The most important task of the received information pre-processing is the "useful" echo-signals selection from acoustic transducers noise, equipment electronic analog channels and structural obstacles. At the same time, noise and obstacles level can significantly exceed the useful signals level. © Fédération Internationale

A pseudo 3D FE model has been developed to simulate nonlinear response of single piles under lateral loading. This procedure called Nonlinear Vertical Slices Model (NVSM) takes advantage of finite element 2D numerical solutions in plane stress for building approximate 3D solutions by replacing the inter-slices interactions by fictitious body forces. The pile/soil continuum slices are successively analyzed by the combination of the explicit 2D finite element and finite difference method in a process satisfying both iterative natures of the VS Model and the nonlinear soil assumed to follow Drucker-Prager yield criterion. First, the nonlinear FE VS computational strategy is briefly outlined and then a computer code called Pile3D-NVSM for laterally loaded piles is presented. The paper ends by the validation of the code by problems involving both elastic and elasto-plastic soils. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group.
