Air Pollution Monitoring By Integrating Local and Global Information in Self-Adaptive Multiscale Transform Domain

As the deadliest form of pollution, air pollution had a prolonged severe damage to the human health and life safety of nearly 99% of the world's population. Facing to the problem that billions of tons of pollutants discharged into the air per year by industrial activities, this paper proposed a novel image-based air pollution monitor (IAPM) by incorporating local and global information in the self-adaptive multiscale transform domain, so as to achieve the timely and effective leakage detection of typical air pollutants from a single image. To be specific, this paper first developed a screen-shaped module according to two significant findings in visual neuroscience, which include the high sensitivity of human eyes to horizontal and vertical stimuli and the center-surround inhibition, by designing and fusing the square module, horizontal strip module and vertical strip module parallelly for simulating the behaviour of human eyes to extract local features. Second, the learnable weights and proportional mapping were applied to incorporate the screen-shaped module and lightweight vision transformer as backbone, towards more richly exploiting and fusing local and global information just as the way a brain perceives external stimuli. Third, a new self-adaptive multiscale transform domain method was devised based on two motivations from the visual characteristics of multiscale perception and the brain characteristics of self-adaptive domain transform to modify the backbone by using the operations of pooling and pointwise convolution. Extensive experiments implemented on the datasets of carbon particulate matters and ethylene leakage confirmed the superior monitoring performance of the proposed IAPM model beyond the state-of-the-art (SOTA) peers by an accuracy gain of about 4%. Furthermore, the proposed IAPM model only required 0.089 GFLOPs and 0.15 million model parameters, remarkably outperforming SOTA competitors in computational efficiency and storage resources. © 1999-2

Joint Secure and Covert Communications for Active STAR-RIS Assisted ISAC systems

This paper investigates the design of jointly supporting physical layer security (PLS) and covert communications (CCs) in an active simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (a-STAR-RIS) assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. Due to the unified waveform design of ISAC signals, we consider a challenging scenario with two targets being suspicious attackers, where one warden target potentially detects the confidential transmission behavior of covert users and another eavesdropper target attempts to intercept the broadcasted confidential information of security users. We investigate the joint beamforming design at the base station (BS) and the a-STAR-RIS to achieve a high-quality sensing beampattern while meeting covertness and security communication requirements. (1) For the ideal scenario with perfect channel state information (CSI) and precise target locations, we propose an alternative optimization (AO) method to address the optimization problem involving highly coupled variables. Specifically, the optimal beamforming design at the BS is handled using the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) technique, while the beamforming design at the a-STAR-RIS is addressed through a penalty-based iterative algorithm. (2) A more practical case with uncertain target locations and imperfect CSI is considered to achieve a robust beamforming design, where the non-deterministic outage probability constraints are effectively transformed by employing the Bernstein-type inequality. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the a-STAR-RIS over the baseline cases and certify that the proposed algorithms can effectively balance the tradeoff among the sensing quality, covert and secure communication requirements. Besides, results also show that the proposed robust beamforming scheme can construct adequate sensing beampattern, even with imperfect CSI and uncertain target locations. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Hard landings are a significant safety concern in aviation, with potential consequences ranging from poor passenger experiences to serious injuries or fatalities. Predicting and explaining hard landing events are equally important for enhancing flight safety, the former makes it possible to give proactive warnings, while the latter helps pilots identify the reasons and refine their skills. However, existing studies generally lack a comprehensive consideration for the fine-grained characteristics of flight data containing both inter-temporal and inter-parametric relationships, resulting in suboptimal prediction performance. In addition, most of existing approaches aim at improving the prediction performance but fail to provide interpretability for the causes of hard landing. To address the above problems, we propose DUTSAM, a DUal Two-Stage Attention-based interpretable Model for hard landing prediction from quick access recorder (QAR) data. The model consists of dual parallel modules, each of which combines a convolutional feature encoder and a two-stage attention mechanism. The two encoders capture fine-grained characteristics by encoding multivariate data from temporal domain and parametric domain respectively. After that, the dual two-stage attention mechanism captures the inter-temporal and inter-parametric correlations in reverse order to predict hard landing and provide interpretation from both temporal and parametric perspectives. Experimental results on a real QAR dataset with 37,920 flights show that DUTSAM achieves better prediction performance compared with other state-of-the-art baselines in terms of Precision, Recall, and F1-score. Additionally, case study demonstrates that DUTSAM can uncover key flight parameters and moments strongly correlated to the hard landing events. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Adaptive walking control of quadruped robots based on central pattern generator (CPG) and reflex

This paper presents a central pattern generator （CPG） and vestibular reflex combined control strategy for a quadruped robot. An oscillator network and a knee-to-hip mapping function are presented to realize the rhythmic motion for the quadruped robot. A two-phase parameter tuning method is designed to adjust the parameters of oscillator network. First, based on the numerical simulation, the influences of the parameters on the output signals are analyzed, then the genetic algorithm （GA） is used to evolve the phase relationships of the oscillators to realize the basic animal-like walking pattern. Moreover, the animal＇s vestibular reflex mechanism is mimicked to realize the adaptive walking of the quadruped robot on a slope terrain. Coupled with the sensory feedback information, the robot can walk up and down the slope smoothly. The presented bio-inspired control method is validated through simulations and experiments with AIBO. Under the control of the presented CPG and vestibular reflex combined control method, AIBO can cope with slipping, falling down and walk on a slope successfully, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed walking control method.

Geometric Algebra Multi-order Graph Neural Network for Traffic Prediction

Accurate traffic prediction is crucial for urban traffic management. Spatial-temporal graph neural networks, which combine graph neural networks with time series processing, have been extensively employed in traffic prediction. However, traditional graph neural networks only capture pairwise spatial relationships between road network nodes, neglecting high-order interactions among multiple nodes. Meanwhile, most work for extracting temporal dependencies suffers from implicit modeling and overlooks the internal and external dependencies of time series. To address these challenges, we propose a Geometric Algebraic Multi-order Graph Neural Network (GA-MGNN). Specifically, in the temporal dimension, we design a convolution kernel based on the rotation matrix of geometric algebra, which not only learns internal dependencies between different time steps in time series but also external dependencies between time series and convolution kernels. In the spatial dimension, we construct a tokenized hypergraph and integrate dynamic graph convolution with attention hypergraph convolution to comprehensively capture multi-order spatial dependencies. Additionally, we design a segmented loss function based on traffic periodic information to further improve prediction accuracy. Progressive ranking and composition of web services with interaction relationship

service-oriented computing is a new software development paradigm that allows application developers to select available services from the Internet and to form new web services. A main problem is how to efficiently determine the most appropriate web services that will be combined into an application based on their functionalities, licensing costs, and reliability. Bryce et al. make use of the group testing results, and then progressively select the best component WS to construct the composite service by using interaction testing. However, they consider only pair-wise (2-way) interaction among any two component WS. In really composite service, there are not always interactions among any component WS, and some component WS may need Nway (N >2) testing since there is a closer relationship among them. We extend the model of interaction testing for WS with interaction relationship and propose a greedy algorithm for constructing variable covering arrays with bias. Experimental results show that our approach can cover more important interactions among web services earlier. © 2010 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Currently, with the evolution of virtualization technology, cloud computing mode has become more and more popular. However, people still concern the issues of the runtime integrity and data security of cloud computing platform, as well as the service efficiency on such computing platform. At the same time, according to our knowledge, the design theory of the trusted virtual computing environment and its core system software for such network-based computing platform is at the exploratory stage. In this paper, we believe that efficiency and isolation are the two key proprieties of the trusted virtual computing environment. To guarantee these two proprieties, based on the design principle of splitting, customizing, reconstructing, and isolation-based enhancing to the platform, we introduce TRainbow, a novel trusted virtual computing platform developing by our research *** the two creative mechanisms, that is, capacity flowing amongst VMs and VM-based kernel reconstructing, TRainbow provides great improvements (up to 42%) in service performance and isolated reliable computing environment for Internet-oriented, large-scale, concurrent services.

Fueled by advancements in intelligent transportation systems, the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) seeks to connect smart vehicles, road infrastructure, and users into a unified network, enhancing traffic efficiency and reducing accident risks. Centralized cloud data collection raises concerns about privacy and communication overhead. To address these, Distributed Edge Intelligence (DEI) reduces transmission costs and improves privacy by implementing machine learning at the network edge. In this context, Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) systems, combined with DEI in the IoV framework, enhance transportation system intelligence through real-time data processing and decentralized decision-making. This paper proposes a modeling and analysis method for CACC systems based on Petri nets. The datasets are automatically generated using tools developed by our team, and machine learning methods are utilized to perform risk prediction analysis on the CACC model. From the perspective of Petri nets synchronization, we propose risk mitigation strategies from a design standpoint. The research results show that the proposed method significantly reduces signal accumulation and enhances synchronization in CACC systems. This improvement provides new theoretical support and technical guidance for the design and implementation of CACC systems, ultimately enhancing their safety and reliability. © 2025 IEEE.

Artificial synapses are essential components for realizing neuromorphic computing at the physical level. Although numerous artificial synaptic devices have been fabricated in recent years, their performance is often limited by their resistance state modulation capabilities and stability. Developing artificial synaptic devices with a high number of intermediate states, excellent linearity, and ultralow power consumption remains a challenge. This work presents a neuromorphic synaptic device based on a van der Waals layered ionic conductor material, CuCrP2S6 (CCPS). The interest in multi-drone systems flourished in the last decade and their application is promising in many fields. We believe that in order to make drone swarms flying smoothly and reliably in real-world scenarios we need a first intermediate step which consists in the analysis of the effects of limited sensing on the behavior of the swarm. In nature, the central sensor modality often used for achieving flocking is vision. In this work, we study how the reduction in the field of view and the orientation of the visual sensors affect the performance of the Reynolds flocking algorithm used to control the swarm. To quantify the impact of limited visual sensing, we introduce different metrics such as (i) order, (ii) safety, (iii) union and (iv) connectivity. As Nature suggests, our results confirm that lateral vision is essential for coordinating the movements of the individuals. Moreover, the analysis we provide will simplify the tuning of the Reynolds flocking algorithm which is crucial for real-world deployment and, especially for aerial swarms, it depends on the envisioned application. We achieve the results presented in this paper through extensive Monte-Carlo simulations and integrate them with the use of genetic algorithm optimization.
