Nowadays SIMD extensions became ubiquitous for computational platform, being widely used in signal processing, multimedia, and scientific applications. However, compilers still have difficult in vectorizing some applications, such as computations on non-contiguous and especially interleaved data, and loop nest for which inner loops that carry all the dependencies and external loops with strided memory accesses. In order to solve these problems, we adopt Isomorphic Statements Grouping (ISG) after extending group following UD and DU chains, which group isomorphic computation statements that perform the same operation. And correspondingly, we generate vector permutation instructions according to the target ISA SIMD instructions at the SIMD code generation phase. This approach has been implemented in a compiler based on Open64 which translate C source program to C source program with SIMD intrinsic functions. Experiments with this compiler show that ISG Super Level Parallelism(ISG-SLP) can be used to compile a number of real-world kernels, achieving up to 3.11 speedup.

Recently, data center carbon emission has become an emerging concern for the cloud service providers. Previous works are limited on cutting down the power consumption of the data centers to defuse such a concern. In this paper, we show how the spatial and temporal variabilities of the electricity carbon footprint can be fully exploited to further green the cloud running on top of geographically distributed data centers. We jointly consider the electricity cost, service level agreement (SLA) requirement, and emission reduction budget. To navigate such a three-way tradeoff, we take advantage of Lyapunov optimization techniques to design and analyze a carbon-aware control framework, which makes online decisions on geographical load balancing, capacity right-sizing, and server speed scaling. Results from rigorous mathematical analyses and real-world trace-driven empirical evaluation demonstrate its effectiveness in both minimizing electricity cost and reducing carbon emission.

Optimizing MPI Alltoall communications in multicore clusters

MPI Alltoall is an important collective operation. In multicore clusters, many processes run in a node. On the one hand, shared memory can be adopted to optimize Alltoall communications of small messages by leader-based schemes. However, as these schemes adopt a fixed number of leader processes, the optimal performance can't be obtained for all small messages. On the other hand, processes within a node contend for the same network resource. In Alltoall communications of large messages, many synchronization messages are used. Nevertheless, the contention makes their latency increase many times and the synchronization overhead can't be ingored. To solve these problems, two optimizations are presented. For small messages, the PLP method adopts changeable numbers of leader processes. For large messages, the LSS method reduces the number of synchronization messages from 3N to 2√N. The evaluations prove two methods. For small messages, the PLP method always obtains optimal performance. For large messages, the LSS method brings almost constant improvement percentage. The performance is improved by 25% for 32 KB and 64 KB messages.

Behavior of Collective Cooperation Yielded by Two Update Rules in Social Dilemmas:Combining Fermi and Moran Rules

We combine the Fermi and Moran update rules in the spatial prisoner＇s dilemma and snowdrift games to investigate the behavior of collective cooperation among agents on the regular lattice. Large-scale simulations indicate that, compared to the model with only one update rule, the the role of update dynamics should be paid more attention in cooperation behavior exhibits the richer phenomena, and the evolutionary game theory. Meanwhile, we also observe that the introduction of Moran rule, which needs to consider all neighbor＇s information, can markedly promote the aggregate cooperation level, that is, randomly selecting the neighbor proportional to its payoff to imitate will facilitate the cooperation among agents. Current results will contribute to further understand the cooperation dynamics and evolutionary behaviors within many biological, economic and social systems.

We have measured the gamma-ray emission spectrum of the Moon using the data collected by the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi satellite during its first seven years of operation, in the energy range from 30 MeV up to a few GeV. We have also studied the time evolution of the flux, finding a correlation with the solar activity. We have developed a full Monte Carlo simulation describing the interactions of cosmic rays with the lunar surface. The results of the present analysis can be explained in the framework of this model, where the production of gamma rays is due to the interactions of cosmic-ray proton and helium nuclei with the surface of the Moon. Finally, we have used our simulation to derive the cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra near Earth from the Moon gamma-ray data.

Word segmentation has been shown helpful for Chinese-to-English machine translation (MT), yet the way different segmentation strategies affect MT is poorly understood. In this paper, we focus on comparing different segmentation strategies in terms of machine translation quality. Our empirical study covers both English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English translation for the first time. Our results show the necessity of word segmentation depends on the translation direction. After comparing two types of segmentation strategies with associated linguistic resources, we demonstrate that optimizing segmentation itself does not guarantee better MT performance, and segmentation strategy choice is not the key to improve MT. Instead, we discover that linguistical resources such as segmented corpora or the dictionaries that segmentation tools rely on actually determine how word segmentation affects machine translation. Based on these findings, we propose an empirical approach that directly optimize dictionary with respect to the MT task for word segmenter, providing a BLEU score improvement of 1.30. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

As the only method to study long-term climate trend and to predict potential climate risk, climate modeling is becoming a key research topic among governments and research organizations. One of the most essential and challenging components in climate modeling is the atmospheric model. To cover high resolution in climate simulation scenarios, developers have to face the challenges from billions of mesh points and extremely complex algorithms. Shallow Water Equations (SWEs) are a set of conservation laws that perform most of the essential characteristics of the atmosphere. The study of SWEs can serve as the starting point for understanding the dynamic behavior of the global atmosphere. We choose cubed-sphere mesh as the computational mesh for its better load balance in pole regions over other meshes such as the latitude-longitude mesh. The cubed-sphere mesh is obtained by mapping a cube to the surface of the sphere. The computational domain is then the six patches, each of which is covered with N × N mesh points to be calculated. When written in local coordinates, SWEs have an identical expression on the six patches, that is ∂Q/∂t + 1/Λ ∂(ΛF 1 )/∂x 1 + 1/Λ ∂(ΛF 1 )/∂z 2 + S=0, (1) where (x 1 , x 2 ) ∈ [-π/4, π/4] are the local coordinates, Q = (h, hu 1 , hu 2 ) T is the prognostic variable, F i = u i Q (i = 1, 2) are the convective fluxes, S is the source term. Spatially discretized with a cell-centered finite volume method and integrated with a second-order accurate TVD Runge-Kutta method, SWE solvers are transferred to the computation of a 13-point upwind stencil that exhibits a diamond shape. To get the prognostic components (h, hu 1 and hu 2 ) of the central point, its neighboring 12 points need to be accessed. The stencil kernel includes at least 434 ADD/SUB operations, 570 multiplications, 99 divisions. The high arithmetic density of the SWEs algorithm makes it difficult to implement one kernel into the resource-limited FPGA card. I

In this paper,we study the influence of the size of interaction neighbors(k) on the evolution of cooperation in the spatial snowdrift *** first,we consider the effects of noise K and cost-to-benefit ratio r,the simulation results indicate that the evolution of cooperation depends on the combined action of noise and cost-to-benefit *** a lower r,the cooperators are multitudinous and the cooperation frequency ultimately increases to 1 as the increase of ***,for a higher r,the defectors account for the majority of the game and dominate the game if the noise is large *** we mainly investigate how k influences the evolution of cooperation by varying the noise in *** find that the frequency of cooperators is closely related to the size of neighborhood and cost-to-benefit ratio *** the case of lower r,the augmentation of k plays no positive role in promoting the cooperation as compared with that of k = 4,while for higher r the cooperation is improved for a growing size of *** last,based on the above discussions,we explore the cluster-forming mechanism among the *** current results are beneficial to further understand the evolution of cooperation in many natural,social and biological systems.

For benefiting from incorporating the class information, partial least squares (PLS) and its two dimension version (2DPLS) have been widely employed in face recognition when extracting principal components. However, currently popular statistic methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA), only learn holistic, not parts-based, representations which ignore available local features for face recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to extract the facial features called two dimension nonnegative partial least squares (2DNPLS). Our approach can grab the local features via adding non-negativity constraint to the 2DPLS, and can also reserve the advantages of 2DPLS, which are both inherent structure and class information of images. For evaluating our approach's performance, a series of experiments were conducted on two famous face image databases include ORL and Yale face databases, which demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms the compared state-of-art algorithms.
