Efficient Rate Control Algorithm for Hierarchical Video Coding

For rate control (RC) of hierarchical structure coding, an independent rate-quantization (R-Q) model was proposed based on mean absolute differences (MADs) in different temporal levels (TLs). In the proposed R-Q model, a novel MAD model was developed according to the hierarchical structure. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides better performance, in terms of average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and quality smoothness, than the H.264 reference model, JM14.2, under various sequences.

A cross layer collaborating cache scheme to improve performance of HTTP clients in MANETs

This paper proposes a novel cross layer collaborating cache scheme for HTTP clients. It is designed to accelerate the process that an HTTP client retrieves Web content in mobile ad hoc network environment. Unlike other techniques to exploit Web proxy caching or to build P2P protocol overlay to improve HTTP, our scheme incorporates collaboratively working capability into the HTTP client response cache, and thus there is no impact on the compatibility of upper level applications. In addition, as the sharing file information is diffused with routing information, there is no redundant traffic to maintain the cooperating cache mechanism. Using this scheme, cacheable Web content can be distributed among local peers and retrieved later by a client if needed. In our simulation results, this novel cache scheme significantly decreases the latency experienced by a client to download Web content. © 2013 SERSC.

We propose a novel snowdrift game model with edge weighting mechanism to explore the cooperative behaviors among the players on the square lattice. Based on the assumption of three types of weight distribution including uniform, exponential and power-law schemes, the cooperation level is largely boosted in contrast with the traditional snowdrift game on the unweighted square lattice. Exten- sive numerical simulations indicate that the fraction of cooperators greatly augments, especially for the intermediate range of cost-to-benefit ratio r. Furthermore, we investigate how the cooperative behaviors are affected by the undulation amplitude of weight distribution and noise strength of strat- egy selection, respectively. The simulation results will be conducive to further understanding and analyzing the emergence of cooperation, which is a ubiquitous phenomenon in social and biological science.

Analysis approaches of reachability decision is fundamental to Petri nets theory;however, the relevant research work in the past cannot always guarantee the correctness of analysis conclusions. This paper firstly reveals the root cause of wrong conclusions, which are drawn in analysis for deadlock of Petri nets based on modified reachability trees (MRT), and then proposes the rectified calculation of the next-state function and some corresponding definitions, which guarantee MRT's usefulness and correctness in analyzing reachability and deadlock of one-place unbounded Petri nets. Finally, a necessary and sufficient condition of MRT's reachability and the theoretical proof are presented. Examples are given to illustrate the method. © 2012 IEEE.

Mobile cloud computing, promising to extend the capabilities of resource-constrained mobile devices, is emerging as a new computing paradigm which has fostered a wide range of exciting applications. In this new paradigm, efficient data transmission between the cloud and mobile devices becomes essential. This, however, is highly unreliable and unpredictable due to several uncontrollable factors, particularly the instability and intermittency of wireless connections, fluctuation of communication bandwidth, and user mobility. Consequently, this puts a heavy burden on the energy consumption of mobile devices. Confirmed by our experiments, significantly more energy is consumed during "bad" connectivity. Inspired by the feasibility to schedule data transmissions for prefetching-friendly or delay-tolerant applications, in this paper, we present eTime, a novel Energy-efficient data TransmIssion strategy between cloud and Mobile dEvices, based on Lyapunov optimization. It aggressively and adaptively seizes the timing of good connectivity to prefetch frequently used data while deferring delay-tolerant data in bad connectivity. To cope with the randomness and unpredictability of wireless connectivity, eTime only relies on the current status information to make a global energy-delay tradeoff decision. Our evaluations from both trace-driven simulation and real-world implementation show that eTime can be applied to various popular applications while achieving 20%-35% energy saving.

In order to apply our high efficiency fibre-channel token-routing network (shortened as FC-TR network) to the field of materials simulation research, a new MPI parallel computing environment is proposed and designed, and independently developed a parallel programming environment FC-TR-MPI based on FC-TR network. In FC-TR-MPI, a new method was applied to point-to-point communication that the network communications between processes in the same computing node were changed into memory operations;moreover, according to the underlying software and hardware features of FC-TR network, new algorithms were proposed to optimize the communication performance of some collective communications. Experimental results show that, compared with ScaMPI parallel programming environment, FC-TR-MPI has a higher parallel efficiency and speedup.

Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) is a relatively new and an powerful method for evaluating regional interactions that occur when a participant is not performing an explicit task. Because of sensitiveness to time delay and length of time courses, respectively, traditional methods of correlation and coherence based on region of interest are not very suitable for rsfMRI. In this paper, we analyzed low frequency property of rsfMRI data. Firstly, we calculated the low frequency of resting-state Blood-Oxygenation-Level-Dependent(BOLD) signal on every voxel using Welch method, based on which we analyzed the statistical distribution cross subjects and voxels. The low frequency feature is proved by a series of experiments to be more robust and consistent comparing with coorelation in time domain and coherency in frequency domain. We found that the property of low frequency statistical distribution is dominant on narrow band, which is around 0.0137HZ. © 2012 IEEE.

A Dependability Model for TMR system

Much research has been done on the dependability evaluation of computer systems. However, much of this is gone no further than study of the fault coverage of such systems, with little focus on the relationship between fault coverage and overall system dependability. In this paper, a Markovian dependability model for triple-modular-redundancy (TMR) system is presented. Having fully considered the effects of fault coverage, working time, and constant failure rate of single module on the dependability of the target TMR system, the model is built based on the stepwise degradation strategy. Through the model, the relationship between the fault coverage and the dependability of the system is determined. What is more, the dependability of the system can be dynamically and precisely predicted at any given time with the fault coverage set. This will be of much benefit for the dependability evaluation and improvement, and be helpful for the system design and maintenance.
