Algorithm-specific, that is, semantic-specific optimizations have been observed to bring significant performance gains, especially for a diverse set of multi/many-core architectures. However, current programming models and compiler technologies for the state-of-the-art architectures do not exploit well these performance opportunities. In this article, we propose a pattern-making methodology that enables algorithm-specific optimizations to be encapsulated into "optimization patterns". Such optimization patterns are expressed in terms of preprocessor directives so that simple annotations can result in significant performance improvements. To validate this new methodology, a framework, named EPOD, is developed to map these directives into the underlying optimization schemes for a particular architecture. It is difficult to create an exact performance model to determine an optimal or near-optimal optimization scheme (including which optimizations to apply and in which order) for a specific application, due to the complexity of applications and architectures. However, it is trackable to build individual optimization components and let compiler developers synthesize an optimization scheme from these components. Therefore, our EPOD framework provides an Optimization Programming Interface (OPI) for compiler developers to define new optimization schemes. Thus, new patterns can be integrated into EPOD in a flexible manner. We have identified and implemented a number of optimization patterns for three representative computer platforms. Our experimental results show that a pattern-guided compiler can outperform the state-of-theart compilers and even achieve performance as competitive as hand-tuned code. Therefore, such a patternmaking methodology represents an encouraging direction for domain experts' experience and knowledge to be integrated into general-purpose compilers. © 2012 ACM.

As an extension of the singular value decomposition based approaches, a novel metric based on Tucker decomposition for color image quality assessment is proposed in this paper. It extracts both the spacial and chromatic information of a color image with Tucker decomposition. As compared to most of the other existing quality metrics for color images, the key advantage of the proposed metric is that it treats the color image as a whole entity instead of an assembly of three independent visual channels, and thus the interrelation among the different visual channels is well involved. Experimental results on the LIVE Database Release 2 demonstrate that the proposed metric can generally achieve similar or better performance than other metrics.

A study on the optimum state for classroom learning from brain cognition perspective-research on relaxed alertness

Booming development in brain science injects new vitality into the reform of teaching methods. Based on the perspective of brain cognition, this article addresses the optimum state for classroom learning- the relaxed alertness. This is a good state of mind combined low threats with high challenges. Specially, the vigilance is estimated by extracting useful electroencephalogram (EEG) information in time-domain, frequency-domain and spatial distribution. It is used as an indicator to judge whether a student is in the optimum state. Focusing on how to achieve that ideal state, this article discusses some new teaching methods, including the use of Baroque music to stimulate alpha brainwave, the design of effective pattern of guiding class to arouse positive emotions of students and the conversion of teaching forms as novel stimuli to heip them improve vigilance and tide over thinking trough. The effectiveness of these methods is verified by the relevant experimental results.

Face tracking is a well-known and quite challenging area in computer vision. An improved fragment based face tracking method is introduced in this paper. Fragment based method has been proved to be effective to handle partial occlusion, but it is not sensitive to appearance changes of the target. The proposed method first segments the face to be tracked into overlap fragments, then uses online boosting to compute the final target position which can handle appearance changes quite naturally. We demonstrate the performance of the algorithm on several publically available video sequences.

Many real networks included Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) can be considered as scale-free weighted networks which reflect their existing forms and dynamic characteristics. Based on local-world theory, we propose an uneven clustering weighted evolving model of WSN in this paper. The definitions of edge weight and vertex strength take sensor energy, communication traffic and distance into consideration. Vertex strength drives the growth of topology and edge weight dynamically changes correspondingly. Experimental results demonstrate that WSN topology we obtain has the property of weighted networks: edge weight, vertex degree and strength follow a power law distribution. Related research work show that weighted WSN not only share the robustness and fault tolerance of weight-free networks, but also reduce the happening probability of successive node-breakdown, furthermore, enhance the synchronization of WSN.

Analysis approaches of reachability decision is fundamental to Petri nets theory; however, the relevant research work in the past cannot always guarantee the correctness of analysis conclusions. This paper firstly reveals the root cause of wrong conclusions, which are drawn in analysis for deadlock of Petri nets based on modified reachability trees (MRT), and then proposes the rectified calculation of the next-state function and some corresponding definitions, which guarantee MRT's usefulness and correctness in analyzing reachability and deadlock of one-place unbounded Petri nets. Finally, a necessary and sufficient condition of MRT's reachability and the theoretical proof are presented. Examples are given to illustrate the method.

The paper provides the solution of the campion for CDMC2011, a data mining contest. The task for the data mining contest organized in conjunction with the ICONIP20II conference was to learn three predictive models (i.e. a classifier) capable of distinguishing between different classes for three separate tasks. Different combinations of data preprocess, feature selection and classifier learning methods were tried to obtain the best results. The performance of classifiers are improved by ensemble learning method. The final accuracy on test dataset shows our methods outperformed others. Copyright © 2012 Binary Information Press.

Purpose: The analysis of syndrome distribution and the association between symptom((signs))-syndrome in chronic gastritis (CG) patients can provide references for research about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis and treatment of CG. Method: This paper applies the investigation method of clinical epidemiology, adopts probability statistics method and comes up with the concept of associated density to conduct association analysis of symptom-syndrome. Result: In the distribution of syndromes patients who have a single syndrome occupy 64.7% of the whole sample;some symptoms have been selected out, of which the associated density is more than 0.6. Conclusion: Through this comparison of the values, we found the obvious one-way relationship of the symptoms (signs) and syndromes, and the results are in line with traditional Chinese medicine theory. This method effectively complements and supports traditional Chinese medicine point of view and hypothesis.

Recently sparse representation based classification (SRC) has been widely used for face recognition (FR). However, in this paper, a sparse representation with structured and discriminative dictionary learning (DL_SL_SC_SRC) algorithm is proposed for human behavior recognition. First, spatio-temporal interested points are extracted for behavior atom representation by the motion-constrained SIFT algorithm and Bag-of-Behavior Atom strategy is utilized to represent each behavior sample with a compact and discriminative feature. Then structured and discriminative sparse decomposition is proposed for behavior representation and recognition. Especially, we reformulate the objective functions for both dictionary learning and sparse representation for classification with the philosophy of structuring and discrimination. Large scale comparative experiments show the accuracy and robustness of the method. Moreover, the proposed method outperforms most of the state-of-art methods for human behavior recognition.
